Those who know do not tell; those who tell do not know. Lao Tse In earlier papers (Hakansson, 1977, 1981), the equilibrium properties of two financial disclosure scenarios, “laissez-faire” and “timely public disclosure” were compared. The analysis showed that, measured in welfare space, the incentives of only two groups, less well-to-do subscribing investors and nonsubscribing investors (who tend to be “small” in terms of their resources) prefer the second scenario even though it results in greater aggregate output across states. The incentives of management, information searchers, and more well-to-do investors favor a “wide window” between significant events affecting the firm and their public disclosure, at least in the short run. The “cost” of this scenario is that it draws a sizable group of talented people from the productive sector into “scooping” information before its eventual disclosure. It is noteworthy that a regulatory solution is likely to further reduce, not improve, the productive efficiency of the economy. This paper examines the financial disclosure question further and argues that its resolution is directly linked to the principal-agent “contract” between the shareholders and management. These contracts do exhibit some peculiar properties, especially in the area of management compensation and with respect to MBOs, in which management apparently manages to be both the buyer and the “agent” for the seller.

Support is sought in the texts of Armond (1999) to present, by way of initiation, the Chinese confessional traditions. According to the author, the antiquity of Chinese civilization goes beyond 10,000 years. The foundation of their national religion is in the works of three sages: Fo-hi, Lao-tzu and Kongtzeu (Confucius), who lived in very remote times of history: the first, as emperor, from 3468 BC; the second 604 BC and the last 478 BC Later, with the introduction of Buddhism, three became the religions of China: Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism (ARMOND, 1999).

This article summarises the findings from Karen Fagan’s research (Successful young adults are asked – In your experience, what builds confidence? (2010)) in which focus group discussions explored young adults’ perceptions of the concept of ‘confidence’, and the ‘building of confidence’, both in themselves and in others. The research participants were Year 13 students attending a co-educational state high school in a provincial town of Aotearoa/New Zealand during 2009. This article outlines core components of the research journey, including underpinning philosophies, the research methodology and the research design. Key findings are then highlighted, research limitations are noted, recommendations are made and the emergent definition of confidence is proposed, namely that ‘confidence is knowing who you are, having pride in who you are (inside and out), and being able to portray who you are to others’. In the words of the sixth-century philosopher Lao-Tse: If there is radiance in the soul, it will abound in the family If there is radiance in the family, it will be abundant in the communityIf there is radiance in the community, it will grow in the nationIf there is radiance in the nation, the universe will flourish.(cited in Pransky and McMillan, 2009, p. 257).
