The relationship between advertising and product quality has been a controversial topic in the literature because of conflicting empirical evidence and divergent theories about advertising's effects. The authors present an integrative theory based on consumer response to advertising and the costs of producing quality products. The theory posits that the relationship between advertising and quality is stronger when (1) quality is produced at lower cost and (2) consumers are less responsive to advertising. Such a scenario is more likely during the latter stages of the product life cycle. An empirical test supports this argument.

Function is an important aspect of artifacts in engineering design. Although many definitions of function have been proposed in the extensive research mainly in engineering design and philosophy, the relationship among them remains unclear. Aiming at a contribution to this problem, this paper investigates some ontological issues based on the role concept in ontological engineering. We discuss some ontological distinctions of function such as essentiality and actuality and then propose some fundamental kinds of function such as essential function and capacity function. Based on them, we categorize some existing definitions in the literature and clarify the relationship among them. Then, a model of function in a product life-cycle is proposed. It represents the changes of existence of the individuals of each kind of function, which are caused by designing, manufacturing and use. That model enables us to give answers to some ontological questions such as when and where a function exists and what a function depends on. The consideration on these issues provides engineers with some differentiated viewpoints for capturing functions and thus contributes to consistent functional modeling from a specific viewpoint. The clarified relationships among the kinds of function including the existing definitions in the literature will contribute to interoperability among functional models based on the different kinds and/or definitions.

This paper analyzes brand structure of product (enterprise) brand, industrial brand, urban brand for product life cycle design, on the basis of Brand Symbol Triangle Model, analysis of the relationship among three brands, and further analyzes from product brand to industrial brand, urban brand evolutionary path. This paper argues a (enterprise) brand managers to guide the angle of the product in regional industrial brand promotion, urban brand enhancement strategies.

Starting from the product life cycle, this paper established the modeling of enterprise cluster entity at the base of analyzing the various products of the enterprise cluster. The modeling comprises the process dimension, resource dimension and organization dimension. Every dimension was expressed by the analysis of product view. Then, based on the complex network theory, we obtained the distribution of the products by the product network. Finally, we got the relationship of enterprise cluster entity from the result of the product network.

This paper mainly researches the relationship between technology standard and effect of FDI technology spillover by analyzing the production life cycle theory. FDI technology spillovers depend on not only technology stock, but also technology standard of foreign firms. By analyzing product life cycle theory, this paper studies the inevitability of foreign firm transferring technology standard to host country. Simultaneously, this paper proves that technology standard can certainly block the technology evolution of host country and impede its technology innovation, which can help foreign firm obtain monopoly rent and stable power.

In order to increase value and reduce environmental loads and resource consumption over the entire product life cycle, a designer should design a product life cycle as well as a product in an integrated manner. In order to support such integrated life cycle design, we are currently developing Life Cycle CAD (LC-CAD) system. Indispensable requirements for LC-CAD system include the following three points: (1) Representing a product and its life cycle in an integrated manner, (2) Managing the consistency of the relationship between a product and its life cycle, and (3) Life cycle evaluation by using the information of a product and its life cycle. This paper focuses on the function (1) and (2), and proposes a method of consistency management between a product and its life cycle. For this purpose, this paper proposes a method for representing a product and its life cycle with defining the relationship between these two models. Then, this paper proposes a management scheme for the consistency of the relationship. We developed a prototype systemand applied it to design of Liquid Cristal Display (LCD) TV as a case study. The result indicates that the relationship between a product and its life cycle is successfully represented and managed, and that a designer can design them in an integrated manner.

Based on data from internet, investigation was conducted to verify the relationship between the ratio of fake parts and the number of automobile holdings. A complete information game was modeled to reveal the impact of piracy on product life cycle of automobile parts. Numerical analysis showed that automobile manufacturers, threatened by piracy, may get maximum profits by appropriate regenerating key parts.
