Clinical Relevance Cervical finish line type has an influence on the marginal adaptation of Y-TZP restorations. Both shoulder and mini-chamfer exhibited the least marginal opening values for zirconia crowns and can be recommended for clinical applications.

AbstractThis study aimed to investigate the artifacts induced by crowns composed of different materials with prepared teeth and titanium implants. Resin, metal-ceramic, ceramic and zirconia crowns were fabricated and placed onto the prepared teeth on a human cadaver head or titanium implants with prosthesis abutments on a dry human mandible. The samples were scanned on a 1.5 T MRI apparatus, and artifact areas were defined as the signal intensity and signal loss adjacent to the prosthesis and measured by a threshold tool with ImageJ2x. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0. Resin, ceramic, zirconia, and precious metal-ceramic crowns barely produced artifacts on the cadaver skull (p > 0.999). By contrast, pure Ti and nonprecious metal-ceramic crowns created significant artifacts (p < 0.001). The average artifacts reduction of double Au-Pt and Ag-Pd metal-ceramic crowns combined with titanium implants and abutments was 79.49 mm2 (p < 0.001) and 74.17 mm2 (p < 0.001) respectively, while artifact areas were increased in double Co-Cr and Ni–Cr metal-ceramic crowns by 150.10 mm2 (p < 0.001) and 175.50 mm2 (p < 0.001) respectively. Zirconia, ceramic and precious metal-ceramic crowns induce less MRI artifacts after tooth preparation while precious metal-ceramic crowns alleviate artifacts in combination with titanium implants.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of finish line design and cement space thickness on the marginal accuracy of monolithic zirconia crowns. Materials and methods: Thirty crowns were fabricated from translucent zirconia (inCoris TZI) using Cerec in-Lab system and divided into three main groups (10 each) according to the finish line type of the die (knife-edge, chamfer, and shoulder). Every group was divided into two subgroups (5 each) according to cement space thickness (20 and50μm). Optical impressions were taken for the dies using the Cerec scanner and cement space was set twice for every finish line design; 20 and 50 μm. The completed crowns were cemented to the dies and the marginal gap was evaluated. The collected data was statistically analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test and the significance level was set at P ≤ 0.05. Results: Regarding the marginal gap; there was no statistically significant difference between different finish line designs or between different cement space thicknesses. Conclusion: Neither finish line design nor cement space thickness has an effect on the marginal gap of inCoris TZI crowns.KeywordsCement space; Finish line; Marginal fit; Monolithic zirconia.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the marginal gap (MG) and absolute marginal discrepancy (MD) of full ceramic crowns with two finish line designs, shoulder and chamfer, using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) before and after cementation. Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted human maxillary premolar teeth were divided into two groups based on the finish line design: Group I: 90° shoulder and Group II: 135° chamfer. The specimens were further grouped based on the type of full ceramic crown they received: Group A: Feldspathic Cerec inLab ceramic system, Group B: Cerec inLab aluminum oxide ceramic system and Group C: Lithium disilicate press ceramic system. Before cementation, five crowns from each group were scanned using micro-CT in two sections, sagittal and coronal, to determine the MG and MD values for four regions of the crown (sagittal buccal, sagittal lingual, coronal mesial and coronal distal). After cementation and thermal cycling, the scanning was repeated. Measurements were obtained from 10 points for each region, 80 points totally, to evaluate the MG and MD values. Files were processed using NRecon and CTAn software. Results were statistically analyzed using one- and two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (P = 0.05). Results: Full ceramic systems showed clinically acceptable marginal adaptation values. The Feldspathic Cerec inLab ceramic system generally presented the lowest variance, except in the MG values of the coronal mesial region. The MG and MD values of all ceramics increased significantly after cementation, except in the shoulder preparation design (sagittal buccal region) for MG and in the chamfer preparation design (sagittal lingual region) for MD values. Conclusions: Full-ceramic crowns showed clinically acceptable marginal adaptation values. The Feldspathic Cerec inLab ceramic system (Vitablocs Mark II) generally presented the lowest variance when compared with the other ceramics, except for the MG values on the mesial surface of the coronal section.

Clinical Relevance Resin coating improves the marginal seal of partial ceramic crowns to dentin compared to conventional luting, especially at the dentin/composite interface. However, the self-adhesive material RelyX Unicem shows significantly better marginal integrity than the other materials tested.
