This study aims to develop a local instruction theory (LIT) based on realistic mathematics education (RME) that is valid, practical, and effective on the topic of multiplication in grade III of elementary school. The research method used is research design type Gravemeijer & Cobb (2013). The research was conducted in three phases, namely preparing for the experiment, experimenting in the classroom, and conducting retrospective analysis. Data was collected using document analysis, observation, interviews, field notes, tests, and questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on the research that has been carried out, LIT is produced which is valid, practical, and effective against students' mathematical problem solving abilities. Students can find a standard multiplication algorithm with a series of activities, namely finding the product of multiplication with repeated additions, ten multiplications, multiples of multiples of ten, and standard multiplication algorithms. Keywords: LIT, RME, multiplication

ABSTRACT: “The Local Instruction Theory in Realistic Mathematics Education for Improving the Ability of Logical Thinking”. The objective of this study was to determine the Mathematical learning difficulties and differences increase students' ability to think logically whose treated by learning approach LIT (Local Instruction Theory) with RME (Realistic Mathematics Education) and students treated by PMR learning approach only. The research method in the form of design research, with research subjects totaling 184 of JHS (Junior High School) students, derived from different school rankings. The research findings show that the difficulties of learning experienced by JHS students were caused by difficult to understand the variables, coefficients, and constants; difficult to read, to interpret the intent problems, to strategize in solving problems; difficult in the process of calculation; and still wrong in writing the equation. The increasing of logical thinking ability of students in learning to use LIT with RME is higher than students whose learning by using RME only. A further study is required to see the effect of using LIT with RME towards other Mathematical skills and at various school levels.KEY WORD: Local Instruction Theory; Difficulty Learning; Realistic Mathematics Education; Junior High School Students; Logical Thinking.    About the Authors: Tatang Supriatna adalah Mahasiswa SPs UPI (Sekolah Pasca Sarjana, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia), Jalan Dr. Setiabudhi No.229 Bandung 40154, Jawa Barat, Indonesia. This study discusses developing a mathematical education (RME) based local theory (LIT) that is valid, practical, and effective on the topic of the lowest common multiple and greatest common factor in grade V of elementary school. The research method used is the type of research design Gravemeijer & Cobb (2013). This research was conducted in three phases, namely conducting experiments, experimenting in class, and conducting a retrospective analysis. Data was collected using document analysis, observation, interviews, field notes, tests, and questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on the research that has been done, LIT has been approved which is valid, practical, and effective for students' mathematical literacy abilities. Students can solve the problems of LCM and GCF with various activities, namely finding multiples and multiples of fellowship, finding factors and factors of fellowship then resolving problems related to daily life. Keywords: LIT, RME, LCM, CGF.

One characteristic of typical mathematical problem is that it requires bunch of relevant prior knowledge. This knowledge is built consecutively and is recalled whenever needed to promote student to solve the problem. The process undertaken by the solver to utilize existing relevant prior knowledge while solving the problem is called access. However, this access is possible subject to disturbance for some reasons. This literature study addresses some factors that can distract access: factor related to metaprocess and factor related to deficit structure. The variants included in both factors have been proved through research as the contributors of the accessibility of relevant prior knowledge. Knowledge that cannot be accessed is called inert knowledge, the main reason for why solver face the difficulty to find the answer to given mathematical problem. The explanation leads to the suggestion of how to tackle the inertia of particular knowledge. One of them are through the instruction setting. Realistic Mathematics Education as one of approaches in learning can be a possible alternative for the issue of inert knowledge. Keywords. Mathematical problem solving, prior knowledge, access, inert knowledge, Realistic Mathematics Education

Mathematical problem solving was an crucial skill to be mastered by primary school student so that will help student to unravel their problems encountered in everyday life. By using the realistic mathematics approach, stundents learn mathematical concept based on reality or scope around students. This study aimed to develop an eligible learning materials and test the effectiveness of learning materials based on realistic mathematics education to enhance the problem solving skill of primary school students. This research and development study was conducted in Sawangan Subdistrict, Magelang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The testing subjects consisted of 12 students in the the preliminary field, there were 42 students in the main field, and 90 students in the operational field that divided into experiment dan control class. The data were collected by interviews, observation, and tests. The analyzing N-gain score and t-test with a significant level of 0.05 done to find out th effectiveness of the teaching materials. The developed of realistic mathematics eduation learning materials is feasible and effective in improving problem solving skill with significance value of 0.000 (p≤0.05). It can enhance the problem solving skills of 4th grade elementary school.

This research aimed to develop local instruction theory that is valid, practical, and effective to help elementary school students developing their mathematical problem-solving skills. Therefore a sequential activityis design on dailybasis to encourage students to develop their ability to solve mathematical problems, especially on the topic division. To achieve the goal, realistic mathematics approach was implemented to grade three elementary students in the learning process. The designed activities were validated by experts on the aspects of mathematical contents, language, didactical process based on realistic mathematical approach. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and parametric statistics. The validation results show that the local instruction theory was valid, and the implementation shows that the local instruction theory is practical and effective in improving students' mathematical problem-solving skills.
