Considering the urgency of integrating technologies in the contemporary classrooms, the aim of the presented study has been shaped to outline the impact of inquiry-based English language teaching through digital applications on primary learners’ reading comprehension and autonomy development during a pandemic outbreak of COVID-19. The research context has been designed in a quantitative manner to analyze experiment results and compare control and treatment group learners’ reading comprehension and academic achievement levels as well as to measure primary schoolchildren’s level of autonomy before and after the treatment. The subjects’ autonomy level, curiosity and interest in reading through digital applications before and after the experiment have been evaluated through pre and post-experimental questionnaires. Learning processes of two experimental and two control groups were compared to create four research contexts for the study. Discrepancy between inquiry-based teaching through a digital library and a traditional way of teaching reading has been emphasized in the study results. The obtained data has been analyzed using SPSS to compare the academic performance results. The study revealed that inquiry-based English language teaching through digital applications highly enhanced the primary learners’ academic performance in reading and increased their motivation level to study independently.

This research is based on ESL reading comprehension. Its purpose is to identify which purpose-built learning actions for constructing text-based and topic-based knowledge first-semester students from the English Language Teaching Program at Universidad de Córdoba applied more often while reading. Data was gathered through a reading platform called knockWhy?, along with a reading activity in which students brought up purpose-built learning actions. After using the platform, the students answered a questionnaire in order to evaluate their experience and opinion about the platform’s design. Results showed that students brought a significant amount of purpose-built learning actions, which mainly concerned textual-based knowledge, rather than topic-based. Results also revealed that students’ experience with the platform and its design was significant when bringing up purpose-built learning actions.

Information technology-based instruction (e.g. using Edmodo) gains its popularity as it is likely to strengthen the role of teachers, schools, and parents for the sake of optimizing student learning outcomes. Therefore, this study explores how Edmodo was utilized to mediate digital class in English language teaching (ELT); how Edmodo facilitated students' engagement during the class; and how Edmodo mediated teachers to assess students' learning outcomes. A qualitative approach was employed and 286 students from a secondary school voluntarily participated during the study. Interviews, online mini-polling, and document analysis were deployed as data collection methods, and data were validated by triangulation and analyzed by following the interactive model of data analysis. It revealed that Edmodo was an effective mode to mediate digital class in ELT as the students could interact with their teacher, peers, and course contents effectively, both inside and outside the classroom. The students' engagement was also better in comparison to that of the face-to-face classroom. Finally, Edmodo well-mediated teachers to carry out the computer-based test (CBT); it was an accurate mode of assessment as no cheatings were facilitated; the validity, and reliability of the test could be favorably accomplished.

This study assesses pre-university teachers’ perception about reading comprehension in English as a foreign language (EFL) in Saudi context. It also identifies the difficulties faced by the students in their reading comprehension classes to have a holistic view of learning process. The main aim of the study is to explore the issues related to teaching reading, both from teachers as well as learners’ perspectives, so that the best teaching strategies can be adopted to achieve the desired outcomes. It assesses the ongoing prevalent scenario of learning to read in English as foreign language and observes that the learners’ difficulties are not addressed properly because the teachers/instructors are not trained well or pay less attention to reading skill. A descriptive approach has been used on a sample of instructors from various non-native English-speaking nationalities (n=60) and Saudi learners (n=146). Responses revealed that teachers’ poor awareness of teaching strategies cause poor learning outcomes. Their responses also reveals that their strategies do not take into account learners’ difficulties which somewhere cause learners’ helplessness in getting desired outcome. The results of the study elaborate how the culture and contextual knowledge play significant roles. These are the bases of teaching reading skills along with learners’ needs so that more robust teaching strategies can be followed to truly meet the desired learning outcomes. This will definitely help the teacher-educators as well as the instructors in improvising their teaching practices that suit their classrooms well.
