This piece is about my experience of suicide and the systemic epistemology between culture and laws that are structured like a one size fit all ugly pair of shoes that a mother like me will wear for the rest of my life. I will speak about my experience in this heartbreaking real-life situation through the holistic views of Te Ao Maori and the law. My daughter's name is Chanelle Te Kura Waru, she was born on the 18th of July 1995. Chanelle died from an intentional overdose she was just 21 years old. Chanelle was an articulate independent young woman and she is our only child, her father and I loved her unconditionally, to the world she was just one person, to her father and I she was our world. In 2016/2017, 606 people committed suicide, 457 were males and 149 were females, the highest statistic age group is 20-24yrs. The highest suicide death by methods is hanging or overdose. Maori are the highest ethnic group recording 130 deaths in 2016/2017. May 10, 2017, is the day that I was labeled a victim and my daughter a statistic.

The aim of this research was to explore students’ ideas about chemical reactions and difficulties in understanding the law of conservation of mass in such reactions by using an approach that started from presentations of scientists’ work associated with the law. The developed test items relied on: 1) the historical contents that illustrate the experimental work of three scientists (Lavoisier, Landolt and Lomonosov); 2) the description of school experiments and 3) real life situation. In this way, students would have an opportunity to show understanding of the law of conservation of mass in two contexts, one based on the stories from the history of chemistry and the other contemporary, based on school laboratory experiments and real life situation. Students of different ages were selected for the research: the seventh and the eighth grade of primary school (age 13–14), and the second year of grammar school (age 16). The research involved a total of 301 students. The results indicated that students’ difficulties were mostly associated with the predictions and explanations of mass changes in open reaction systems in which a gas was a reactant than with the reactions in which a gas was a product. Keywords: assessment in chemistry, grammar school, history of chemistry, experimental results, law of conservation of mass.

Abstract As is well-known, the first part of a newborn’s body to emerge during a standard birth is the head. In a breech birth, which is much more rare, the baby enters the world bottom-first. There is no evidence at all of babies exiting the womb with their arms outstretched. Yet biblical accounts of childbirth contain explicit and implicit descriptions of the hand as the first limb to emerge from the womb. In this note, I argue that this erroneous depiction is a reflection of the real life situation of the biblical authors. Since men were not present at childbirth, their knowledge of the process was limited and stereotyped. In contrast, men were very familiar with the birthing of sheep and cattle. Typically, the front legs of a newborn sheep or calf emerge before the body. Male biblical authors relied upon their knowledge of the birthing of sheep and cattle to describe the births of human infants, mistakenly supposing that these two different processes were identical.
