The aim of this paper is to control the flow separation above backward-facing step (BFS) airfoil type NACA 0015 by blowing method. The flow field over airfoil has been studied both experimentally and computationally. The study was divided into two parts: a practical study through which NACA 0015 type with a backward -facing step (located at 44.4% c from leading edge) on the upper surface containing blowing holes parallel to the airfoil chord was used. The tests were done over two-dimensional airfoil in an open circuit suction subsonic wind tunnel with flow velocity 25m/s to obtain the pressure distribution coefficients. A numerical study was done by using ANSYS Fluent software version 16.0 on three models of NACA 0015, the first one has backward-facing step without blowing, the second with single blowing holes and the third have multi blowing holes technique. Both studies (experimental and numerical) were done at low Reynolds number (Re=4.4x105) and all models have chord length 0.27m.The experimental investigations and CFD simulations have been performed on the same geometry dimensions, it has been observed that the flow separation on the airfoil can be delayed by using  velocity blowing (30m/s) on the upper surface. The multi blowing holes with velocity improved the aerodynamics properties.The multi blowing holes and single blowing hole thesame effect onpressure distribution coefficients

Dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators (DBD-PA) and fiber Bragg grating flow sensors (FBG-FS) have been investigated for active control of flow separation around a NACA0024 airfoil. Tangential jets were produced in the vicinity of the DBD-PA slightly aft of the leading edge of the airfoil. The flow separation control ability was evaluated at a low Reynolds number, Re = 5.0×104, in an open-circuit wind tunnel. Analysis of instantaneous and time-averaged velocity distributions around the airfoil was achieved using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. The flow conditions induced by the DBD-PA to suppress the flow separation were found for angles of attack of α = 8°, 12°, and 16°. When unaided by the DBD-PA system, flow separations from NACA0024 airfoil are suppressed significantly for certain Reynolds numbers and angles of attack. FBG-FS attached a chord-wise cantilever near the trailing edge of the airfoil was used to measure strain fluctuations for its feasibility to detect flow separation in real time and construct feedback control system with DBD-PA. In this study, it was found that standard deviations of strain fluctuations increase obviously in cases of flow conditions at which the flow around NACA0024 airfoil separates.

Sunroof has become one of the essential features of a luxury car, and it provides natural air circulation and good illumination into the car. But the primary problem associated with it is the buffeting noise which causes discomfort to the passengers. Though adequate studies were carried out on sunroof buffeting, efficient control techniques are needed to be developed from fundamental mechanism. To reduce the buffeting noise, flow modifications at the entrance of the sunroof is considered in this study. The internal portion of the car with sunroof is simplified into a shear driven open cavity, and two-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out using commercial solver, ANSYS Fluent. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation is used with the realizable k-? turbulence model. The unsteady numerical result obtained in this study is validated with the available experimental results for the dominant frequency. The prediction is good agreement with experiment. Flow modification technique is proposed to control the sunroof buffeting by implementing geometric modifications. A hump has been placed near the leading edge of the cavity which resulted in significant reduction of pressure oscillations. Parametric studies have been performed by varying the height of hump and the distance of hump from the leading edge. There is no prominent difference when the height of the hump is varied. As the distance of the hump from the leading edge is reduced, the sound pressure level decreases.

Experimental investigations concerning cavitation in radial flow pump for three different leading edge profiles of the vane were carried out in an open circuit system. The operating condition of the radial flow pump under cavitating case was understood by measurement of noise and vibration along with the pump parameters for various speeds and flow rates. The outcome of the experimental results revealed that the noise and vibration were better predictors of inception and development of cavitation. Further observation inferred from critical net positive suction head (NPSH) curve of 3% head drop and critical NPSH value of noise and vibration are presented.

This paper presents the effects of airfoil geometry on flow separation behavior and obtains the transition patterns at a specific angle of attack. A strong adverse pressure gradient field is observed at the leading edge of the airfoil, and it results in a flow detachment. Leading edge flow separation is studied along with the variation of skin friction coefficient over the airfoil. Novelty in the approach is the development of a hybrid control scheme to delay the flow separation with blowing/suction of air (termed active control) over the airfoil together with the tapping of flow from the pressure side as in a classical passive control procedure. The active controller delays the flow separation, while the passive controller is used to reduce the drag coefficient significantly and increases the total performance of an airfoil. The effectiveness of these controls is examined by varying the control parameters including blowing/suction velocity, the position of the slot in terms of percentage of chord and size of the slot. All the numerical simulations are carried out using ANSYS-Fluent software. A surrogate model is also developed to predict the aerodynamic characteristics conveniently without much computational effort. The outcome of this study reveals that the blowing/suction velocity has a higher influence in delaying the flow separation. ABSTRAK: Kertas ini membentangkan tentang kesan geometri aerofoil pada perubahan pemisah aliran udara dan memperoleh bentuk peralihan pada darjah yang tepat. Terdapat tekanan kuat yang tidak sesuai pada kawasan kecerunan di hujung hadapan permukaan aerofoil, dan ini menyebabkan aliran udara terpisah. Pemisah aliran udara pada hujung hadapan ini dikaji bersama koefisien geseran pada permukaan aerofoil. Pendekatan baru pada kaedah ini adalah berkaitan pembangunan skim kawalan hibrid bagi melengahkan aliran pemisah udara melalui tiupan/sedutan udara (kawalan aktif) ke atas aerofoil bersama ketukan pada aliran dari tepi tekanan seperti mana prosedur klasik kawalan pasif. Kawalan aktif ini melengahkan aliran pemisah udara, sebaliknya kawalan pasif telah digunakan bagi mengurangkan koefisien penangguhan dengan ketara dan menambahkan jumlah prestasi aerofoil. Keberhasilan kawalan-kawalan ini dikaji dengan mengubah parameter kawalan termasuk kelajuan tiupan/sedutan udara, posisi slot berdasarkan peratusan garis temu dan saiz slot. Semua simulasi-simulasi numerikal ini dijalankan menggunakan perisian Ansys-Fluent. Model pengganti turut dibangunkan untuk menjangka ciri-ciri aero-dinamik dengan mudah tanpa usaha pengiraan yang banyak. Keputusan kajian ini mendedahkan tentang kelajuan tiupan/sedutan udara berpengaruh besar dalam melambatkan pemisahan aliran udara.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to achieve an optimum flow separation control over the airfoil using passive flow control method by introducing bio-inspired nose near the leading edge of the NACA 2412 airfoil. Design/methodology/approach Two distinguished methods have been implemented on the leading edge of the airfoil: forward facing step, which induces multiple accelerations at low angle of attack, and cavity/backward facing step, which creates recirculating region (axial vortices) at high angle of attack. Findings The porpoise airfoil (optimum bio-inspired nose airfoil) delays the flow separation and improves the aerodynamic efficiency by increasing the lift and decreasing the parasitic drag. The maximum increase in aerodynamic efficiency is 22.4 per cent, with an average increase of 8.6 per cent at all angles of attack. Research limitations/implications The computational analysis has been done for NACA 2412 airfoil at low subsonic speed. Practical implications This design improves the aerodynamic performance and increases structural strength of the aircraft wing compared to other conventional high-lift devices and flow-control devices. Originality/value Different bio-inspired nose designs which are inspired by the cetacean species have been analysed for NACA 2412 airfoil, and optimum nose design (porpoise airfoil) has been found.

Purpose This paper aims to achieve an optimum flow separation control over the airfoil using a passive flow control method by introducing a bio-inspired nose near the leading edge of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 4 and 6 series airfoil. In addition, to find the optimised leading edge nose design for NACA 4 and 6 series airfoils for flow separation control. Design/methodology/approach Different bio-inspired noses that are inspired by the cetacean species have been analysed for different NACA 4 and 6 series airfoils. Bio-inspired nose with different nose length, nose depth and nose circle diameter have been analysed on airfoils with different thicknesses, camber and camber locations to understand the aerodynamic flow properties such as vortex formation, flow separation, aerodynamic efficiency and moment. Findings The porpoise nose design that has a leading edge with depth = 2.25% of chord, length = 0.75% of chord and nose diameter = 2% of chord, delays the flow separation and improves the aerodynamic efficiency. Average increments of 5.5% to 6° in the lift values and decrements in parasitic drag (without affecting the pitching moment) for all the NACA 4 and 6 series airfoils were observed irrespective of airfoil geometry such as different thicknesses, camber and camber location. Research limitations/implications The two-dimensional computational analysis is done for different NACA 4 and 6 series airfoils at low subsonic speed. Practical implications This design improves aerodynamic performance and increases the structural strength of the aircraft wing compared to other conventional high lift devices and flow control devices. This universal leading edge flow control device can be adapted to aircraft wings incorporated with any NACA 4 and 6 series airfoil. Social implications The results would be of significant interest in the fields of aircraft design and wind turbine design, lowering the cost of energy and air travel for social benefits. Originality/value Different bio-inspired nose designs that are inspired by the cetacean species have been analysed for NACA 4 and 6 series airfoils and universal optimum nose design (porpoise airfoil) is found for NACA 4 and 6 series airfoils.
