Numerical Study on Control of Sunroof Buffeting

Sunroof has become one of the essential features of a luxury car, and it provides natural air circulation and good illumination into the car. But the primary problem associated with it is the buffeting noise which causes discomfort to the passengers. Though adequate studies were carried out on sunroof buffeting, efficient control techniques are needed to be developed from fundamental mechanism. To reduce the buffeting noise, flow modifications at the entrance of the sunroof is considered in this study. The internal portion of the car with sunroof is simplified into a shear driven open cavity, and two-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out using commercial solver, ANSYS Fluent. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation is used with the realizable k-? turbulence model. The unsteady numerical result obtained in this study is validated with the available experimental results for the dominant frequency. The prediction is good agreement with experiment. Flow modification technique is proposed to control the sunroof buffeting by implementing geometric modifications. A hump has been placed near the leading edge of the cavity which resulted in significant reduction of pressure oscillations. Parametric studies have been performed by varying the height of hump and the distance of hump from the leading edge. There is no prominent difference when the height of the hump is varied. As the distance of the hump from the leading edge is reduced, the sound pressure level decreases.

Abstract A convection system can be designed as an energy-efficient one by making a considerable reduction in exergy losses. In this context, entropy generation analysis is performed on the infrared suppression system numerically. In addition, results due to heat transfer are also shown. The numerical solution of the Navier-stokes equation, energy equation, and turbulence equation is executed using ANSYS Fluent 15.0. To perform the numerical analysis, different parameters such as the number of funnels, Rayleigh number (Ra), inner surface temperature, and geometric ratio are varied in the practical range. Results are shown in terms of heat transfer, entropy generation, irreversibility (due to heat transfer and fluid friction), and Bejan number with some relevant parameters. Streamlines and temperature contours are also provided for better visualization of temperature and flow field around the device. Results show that heat transfer and mass flow rate increase with the increase in Ra. Entropy generation and the irreversibility rise with an increase in the number of funnels and geometric ratio. Also, the Bejan number decreases with an increase in Ra and the number of funnels. A cooling time is also obtained using the lumped capacitance method.

Leading edge erosion is a considerable threat to wind turbine performance and blade maintenance, and it is very imperative to accurately predict the influence of various degrees of erosion on wind turbine performance. In the present study, an attempt to investigate the effects of leading edge erosion on the aerodynamics of wind turbine airfoil is undertaken by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. A new pitting erosion model is proposed and semicircle cavities were used to represent the erosion pits in the simulation. Two-dimensional incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation and shear stress transport (SST) k–ω turbulence model are adopted to compute the aerodynamics of a S809 airfoil with leading edge pitting erosions, where the influences of pits depth, densities, distribution area, and locations are considered. The results indicate that pitting erosion has remarkably undesirable influences on the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil, and the critical pits depth, density, and distribution area degrade the airfoil aerodynamic performance mostly were obtained. In addition, the dominant parameters are determined by the correlation coefficient path analysis method, results showed that all parameters have non-negligible effects on the aerodynamics of S809 airfoil, and the Reynolds number is of the most important, followed by pits density, pits depth, and pits distribution area. Meanwhile, the direct and indirect effects of these factors are analyzed, and it is found that the indirect effects are very small and the parameters can be considered to be independent with each other.

The Savonius rotor appears to be particularly promising for the small-scale applications because of its design simplicity, good starting ability, and insensitivity to wind directions. There has been a growing interest in recent times to harness wind energy in an efficient manner by developing newer blade profiles of Savonius rotor. The overlap ratio (OR), one of the important geometric parameters, plays a crucial role in the turbine performance. In a recent study, an elliptical blade profile with a sectional cut angle (θ) of 47.5° has demonstrated its superior performance when set at an OR = 0.20. However, this value of OR is ideal for a semicircular profile, and therefore, requires further investigation to arrive at the optimum overlap ratio for the elliptical profile. In view of this, the present study attempts to make a systemic numerical study to arrive at the optimum OR of the elliptical profile having sectional cut angle, θ = 47.5°. The 2D unsteady simulation is carried out around the elliptical profile considering various overlap ratios in the range of 0.0 to 0.30. The continuity, unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations and two equation eddy viscosity SST (Shear Stress transport) k-ω model are solved by using the commercial finite volume method (FVM) based solver ANSYS Fluent. The torque and power coefficients are calculated as a function of tip speed ratio (TSR) and at rotating conditions. The total pressure, velocity magnitude and turbulence intensity contours are obtained and analyzed to arrive at the intended objective. The numerical simulation demonstrates an improved performance of the elliptical profile at an OR = 0.15.

The aim of this paper is to control the flow separation above backward-facing step (BFS) airfoil type NACA 0015 by blowing method. The flow field over airfoil has been studied both experimentally and computationally. The study was divided into two parts: a practical study through which NACA 0015 type with a backward -facing step (located at 44.4% c from leading edge) on the upper surface containing blowing holes parallel to the airfoil chord was used. The tests were done over two-dimensional airfoil in an open circuit suction subsonic wind tunnel with flow velocity 25m/s to obtain the pressure distribution coefficients. A numerical study was done by using ANSYS Fluent software version 16.0 on three models of NACA 0015, the first one has backward-facing step without blowing, the second with single blowing holes and the third have multi blowing holes technique. Both studies (experimental and numerical) were done at low Reynolds number (Re=4.4x105) and all models have chord length 0.27m.The experimental investigations and CFD simulations have been performed on the same geometry dimensions, it has been observed that the flow separation on the airfoil can be delayed by using  velocity blowing (30m/s) on the upper surface. The multi blowing holes with velocity improved the aerodynamics properties.The multi blowing holes and single blowing hole thesame effect onpressure distribution coefficients

Numerical simulations are carried out to study the effect of divergence angle and adverse pressure gradient on the movement of shock wave train in a scramjet isolator. The commercial software tool ANSYS Fluent 16 was used to simplify two dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes equation with compressible fluid flow by considering the density-based solver with standard K-ε turbulence model. The species transport model with single step volumetric reaction mechanism is employed. Initially, the simulated results are validated with experimental results available in open literature. The obtained results show that the variation of the divergence angle and back pressure on the scramjet isolator has greater significance on the flow field. Also, with an increase in the back pressure, due to the intense turbulent combustion, the shock wave train developed should expand along the length and also moves towards the leading edge of the isolator leading to rapid rise in the pressure so that the pressure at the entrance of the isolator can match the enhanced back pressures.

The numerical simulations of swirling turbulent flows in isothermal condition in combustion chamber of burner were investigated. The aim is to characterize the main flow structures and turbulence in a combustor that is relevant to gas turbines. Isothermal flows with different inlet flow velocities were considered to demonstrate the effect of radial velocity. The inlet velocity, Uo is varied from 30 m/s to 60 m/s represent a high Reynolds number up to 3.00 X 105. The swirler was located at the upstream of combustor with the swirl number of 0.895. A numerical study of non-reacting flow in the burner region was performed using ANSYS Fluent. The Reynolds–Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach method was applied with the standard k-ɛ turbulence equations. The various velocity profiles were different after undergoing the different inlet velocity up to the burner exit. The results of velocity profile showed that the high U0 give better swirling flow patterns.

Precision machine tools using hydrostatic water bearings are superior to those using hydrostatic oil bearings in terms of environmental protection, worker’s safety, and cost. As for hydrostatic water bearings, a constant-flow type is more suitable than a constant-pressure type. However, the hydrostatic water bearings applied for machine tools are few cases, and there are only a few reports concerning the constant-flow bearings. In this study, sustaining force of the constant-flow hydrostatic water bearing pad is computed numerically by using ANSYS FLUENT. Then the solutions evaluated by the simple analytical models, which were proposed previously, are examined by comparing them with the numerical result. Additionally, an improved analytical model is proposed.

Energy is one of the most important sources in the world especially for developing countries. The subject study is conducted to predict the behaviour of particle due to errosion from the river through the achimedes screw runner and predict the impact of particle toward blade surface. For this reason, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are used. The three-dimensional flow of fluid is numerically analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equation with standard k-ε turbulence model. The reinverse design of archimedes screw blade was refered with the previous researcher. Flow prediction with numerical results such as velocity streamlines, flow pattern and pressure contour for flow of water entering the blade are discussed. This study shows that the prediction of particle impact occurs mostly on the entering surface blade and along the leading edge of the screw runner. Any modification on the design of the screw runner blade can be analyze for further study.

In order to evaluate the efficacy of grooves on cooling performance of wet clutch, a numerical analysis based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT is presented in this study. This analysis is based on the numerical solution of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation, coupled with the energy equation in the flow and the heat conduction equations in the friction material and the core disk. The turbulence characteristics were predicted using RNGk-ε model. The flow field and temperature distributions in radial grooves are obtained. It is shown that radial grooves possess the highest heat exchange performance at the entrance and is not linear distribution in the radial direction and cooling oil flow has a little effect on the highest temperature of friction plate. With the developed analysis method, it is possible to easily and quickly investigate the heat transfer behaviour of wet cluth with groove patterns.

The leading-edge bulges along the extension direction are designed on the marine wingsail. The height and the spanwise wavelength of the protuberances are 0.1c and 0.25c, respectively. At Reynolds number Re=5×105, the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are applied to the simulation of the wingsail with the bulges thanks to ANSYS Fluent finite-volume solver based on the SST K-ω models. The grid independence analysis is carried out with the lift and drag coefficients of the wingsail at AOA = 8° and AOA=20°. The results show that while the efficiency of the wingsail is reduced by devising the leading-edge bulges before stall, the bulges help to improve the lift coefficient of the wingsail when stalling. At AOA=22° under the action of the leading-edge tubercles, a convective vortex is formed on the suction surface of the modified wingsail, which reduces the flow loss. So the bulges of the wingsail can delay the stall.
