There exists a lot of diversity in Indian pharmaceutical environment in various aspects. We have applied Delphi Technique to arrive at specific prevalent diseases in India and identified 24 pharmaceutical firms making drugs for these diseases. We used data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to find out the efficiency of firms and peers of inefficient firms. Tobit regression has been used to get the determinants of efficiency.

One of the most crucial decisions that is regularly exercised by construction contractors is to determine whether to bid or not to bid on a certain project. The purpose of this paper is to propose a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach for the bid–no-bid decision. DEA is a robust non-parametric linear programming approach that is used for benchmarking performance and for making selection decisions. Based on a contractor's database of previous considerations of bidding opportunities, DEA creates a “favorable frontier” that consists of favorable bidding opportunities. New bidding opportunities are evaluated in reference to this “favorable frontier” and the bid–no-bid decision is consequently made. The proposed approach incorporates subjective management expertise and deals systematically with bidding situations to guide contractors in their bid–no-bid determination. A major strength of the proposed DEA approach is that it is deployable by organizations facing the bid–no-bid problem regardless of size, country of operation, number and type of factors considered in bidding, or even industry.

PurposeThe efficient use of organizational resources is integral to the existence of prime firms. This study, using Malmquist data envelopment analysis (DEA), aims to assess in the level of operational and financial efficiency and its determinants for ensuring and sustaining excellent performance in 33 Egyptian private hospitals.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a Malmquist DEA approach to assess the changes in operational and financial efficiency in Egyptian hospitals. Tobit regression was also used to identify the significant variables affecting their efficiency. In addition, a sensitivity analysis is carried out for model validations.FindingsOut of 33 hospitals, 17 were found inefficient due to the decline in their technical efficiency. Moreover, the total value of the software programs and operational expenses and the total number of employees are common factors affecting both operational and financial efficiency. In addition, the number of physicians significantly affects the hospital's financial efficiency.Practical implicationsThe study sheds light on the value of using DEA to assess efficiency. DEA in the context of emerging economy such as Egypt's can be a useful tool for decision-makers and practitioners in identifying and addressing performance weaknesses and thus supports continuous improvement in performance.Originality/valueSeveral studies have adopted the DEA approach to assess the overall efficiency of hospitals in Europe and the United States. However, in the MENA region, these studies are uncommon. This study is thought to be one of the earliest attempts to assess hospitals' efficiency in Egypt.

This study measures and explains technical efficiency (TE), economic efficiency and allocative efficiency of 110 small-scale vegetable farmers practicing various irrigation technologies for increased productivity. We employed the two-stage approach to estimate efficiency scores under constant returns to scale (CRS) and variable returns to scale (VRS) specifications. First, using a linear programming method, efficiency scores of the irrigated vegetable farmers were measured using the data envelopment analysis approach. The results show that about 27.3 per cent of the farmers currently operate on the production possibility frontier and are technically efficient, while 3.6 per cent were found to be both economically and allocatively efficient. The mean TE score for CRS was 50.6 per cent, compared with 78.1 per cent under the VRS. A Tobit regression at the second-stage analysis revealed that gender, experience, health and credit utilization have significant effects on TE. These results are valuable for stakeholders interested in promoting efficiency in smallholder irrigated production. JEL Classification: C14, C61, D24, D61, Q12

One of the ways to increase production was increasing technical efficiency. The purpose of this research was to analyze technical efficiency and factors that affected technical efficiency in Tinggimoncong District, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi. This research used purposive sampling with 50 potatoes farmers. This study used Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach and Tobit regression for data analysis. The result of the study showed that there are 23 farmers of the respondents stated to be efficient or about 46 per cent of the total respondents studied. Factors that significantly influence the technical efficiency of potato farming were education and income outside of farming.
