The aim of this study is to measure the efficiency of higher educational institutions and investigate the comparative efficiency of public and private higher education in Bangladesh. Using data envelopment analysis (DEA), technical efficiency of 15 public universities and 20 private universities of Bangladesh are evaluated over the period 2008-2018. The empirical results reveal that public universities on an average operate between 56.2 to 80.7 percent level of technical efficiency while the private universities between 49.1 to 77.6 percent level over the study period. That is, universities in Bangladesh, on an average, do not operate efficiently in terms of resource utilization. Over the years only 33% public universities and 25% private universities are found efficient. The inefficient universities can improve their efficiency by utilizing full capacity of the inputs or reducing the amount of inputs at the estimated inefficiency rate of the respective universities. Findings also show that the public universities have the scope of producing 1.24 to 1.78 times and private universities 1.28 to 2.04 times as much output from the same level of inputs. Special monitoring by the regulatory authorities is required for inefficient universities to enhance their efficiency level.

The high-quality development of the logistics industry plays an important role in high-quality economic development. Green logistics is attracting more attention, owing to environmental concern. Based on the five concepts of “innovation, coordination, green, openness and sharing” of high-quality economic development, the input–output indicators of green logistics efficiency (GLE) have been designed. The correlation between the green logistics input and output indicators have been analyzed by Pearson, and the green logistics efficiency of 11 cities in Jiangxi Province has been calculated by three-stage DEA. The evolutionary characteristics of the high-quality development of green logistics efficiency in Jiangxi Province were analyzed and evaluated. The conclusions were achieved as follows: (1) Nanchang, Xinyu and Ganzhou city are at the forefront of efficiency, and are less affected by environmental factors. The logistics efficiency of other cities is obviously affected by environmental factors. (2) The comprehensive technical efficiency (TE) of green logistics in Jiangxi Province is strongly influenced by scale efficiency (SE). The poor scale efficiency reduces the comprehensive technical efficiency of green logistics. (3) There is a positive correlation between high-quality economic development and logistics efficiency. In these cities of Jiangxi province (Nanchang, Ganzhou, Jiujiang, etc.) the share of total economy and green logistics efficiency is high. This study proves that Jiangxi province is moving towards high-quality economic development due to good environmental protection. (4) In 2017, Jiangxi Province was recognized as one of the national ecological civilization pilot region by the State Council. Green logistics efficiency in Jiangxi Province showed an inflection point in 2017, indicating that the green concept is becoming more and more popular. From the government to enterprises, the province has achieved initial results in promoting the transformation of the economic development mode. It aims to provide reference for the high-quality development of other provinces.

The cultivation of saffron, which is one of the most expensive agricultural products in the world, is the main source of livelihood and economic wellbeing for the rural communities of Gonabad county in the eastern part of Iran. Nevertheless, farm monitoring in the region has shown that many saffron growers apply a high-density planting system for more profit. This practice results in the loss of land productivity after a six-year production cycle. As a consequence, farmers abandon the cultivated lands and move to plant saffron in available virgin lands. The purpose of this study is to analyse the technical efficiency of saffron farms and its determinants with an emphasis on the role of planting density. A survey was conducted in 2019, and a cross-sectional random sampling technique was used to select 110 saffron growers. We first assessed the technical efficiency of farms using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model with input orientation. In the next step, efficiency scores were regressed on explanatory variables using OLS and bootstrapped truncated regression to identify efficiency related factors. We find that planting density negatively influenced technical efficiency, suggesting that it is necessary for saffron growers to be educated on the negative impacts of the dense planting system.
