Abstract The prolonged starvation has many effects on the physiological and morphological processes in fish and interferes them with the ability to absorb nutrients and caloric intake. The aim of present study was to investigate the effect of long-term starvation and posterior dietary administration of commercial synbiotic consisting fructoligosaccharide (FOS) which used in combination with Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Lactococcus spp. for evaluation on some blood biochemical parameters and histological characteristics of common carp liver. Experimental fish after 5 months starvation period were subjected to the following feeding protocols: continuous starvation until 60 day (ST), re-feeding (FS) with dry composed diet (Aqua 1032 Swim) and refeeding with composed diet and synbiotic (FSS) for the following 60 days. Blood samples were used for analysis of the following plasma parameters: total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, creatinine, cholesterol, AST, ALT, glucose and serum for thyroid hormones. Histology analyses were performed on the carp liver samples. During the experimental period, fasting and refeeding were influenced significant on studied biochemical parameters, except glucose and urea. Also, the statistically largest (P <0.001) difference was observed in albumin and cholesterol values after refeeding. Our results reveal the changes in values of biochemical parameters during long-term starvation and refeeding with synbiotic and indicate signs of structural alterations of the liver in common carp.

The aim of this study was to compare the metabolic status of dairy and dual-purpose cows kept in a single herd under identical management conditions. Milk yield and blood biochemical parameters were examined during the periparturient period in Holstein (H) and Fleckvieh (F) cows. Blood samples were first taken on average 14 days prior to the expected date of calving, next in the peripartal period (1–4 days postpartum), and then at weekly intervals (together with milk samples) until the end of the experiment (8 weeks postpartum). Milk yields were higher in H cows from the second week after calving whereas milk protein content always was higher in F cows over the whole experimental period. The level of metabolic stress determined using blood concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), triglycerides, and cholesterol was similar in both breeds. The proportion of animals with concentrations of NEFA and BHB above thresholds indicating increased risk of negative energy balance and subclinical ketosis was higher in the H breed in the first 2 weeks after calving. This corresponds with numerically higher concentrations of NEFA and BHB in H cows. Changes in the protein status of animals generally reflected the development in energy metabolism parameters. Serum total protein, albumin, and urea levels were similar in the two breeds. Total globulin was higher in H cows than in F cows in weeks 3, 4, and 5 after calving, and the albumin-to-globulin ratio was lower in H cows than in F cows in weeks 2, 3, and 4 after calving. In conclusion, although the onset of changes in key metabolic parameters was rather faster and more pronounced in the H breed, similar dynamics in the development of these parameters indicated similar levels of adaptive performance and body energy mobilization processes in the two breeds.

The article presents the results of studies of chronic toxicity of the Iron in the rare unconventional valence – IV. During long-term use of the Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes for white rats we have established the dynamics of the body weight of rats, the relative coefficients of mass of the internal organs, the content of hemoglobin and morphological parameters of blood, biochemical parameters of blood serum of animals of this species. The daily drinking of solution of the Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes at the doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg b. w. resulted in a decrease in body weight, an increase in the relative indices of masses of liver and kidney, and a decrease in the relative indices of masses of  spleen and heart on 30th day. The hemoglobin content in the blood of rats of the experimental group was less than the control indicator by 3–47% (P < 0.05), which is evidence of inhibition of its synthesis under the influence of the Iron (IV) clathrochelatе. Changes in the morphological composition of the blood were characterized by marked leukocytopenia. The use of rats of a solution of the Iron (IV) clathrochelate complexes at doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg b. w. caused the development of hypoproteinemia, hypercreatinemia and hyperurinemia. Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes reduced alaninaminotransferase activity in the serum of rats of both experimental groups by 15–80% (P < 0.05); aspartataminotransferase activity increased significantly by day 10 and decreased by day 30; the activity of alkaline phosphatase was independent of the doses of the drug during the experimental period. The content of Calcium total, Phosphor inorganic and Iron in the serum of rats of the experimental groups was at the level of indicators in the animals of the control group. Consequently, comprehensive studies of the effects of solution of the Iron (IV) clathrochelate complexes at doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg b. w. were performed for the first time with long-term administration to white rats, which revealed the main patterns of metabolic disorders and physiological functions.
