Abstract This paper is a review of the relevant scientific literature on the present status, distribution, habitat, ecological traits, population structure and threats of Neretva roach Rutilus basak (Heckel, 1843). The species inhabits a restricted area of the Adriatic Sea watershed in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The major threats are habitat loss caused by significant hydrological changes in the water regime in the area of distribution and the introduction of non-indigenous species. Still, R. basak is quite widespread and often abundant. Information brought together in this study will improve our knowledge about this species.

Although a non-indigenous species, Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) has constituted a constant and abundant component of the Szczecin Lagoon biota. A congeneric dreissenid, D. rostriformis bugensis (quagga), was first recorded in the north of the Lagoon in 2014, already in abundance. In summer 2015, the quagga dominated over the zebra mussel in abundance and biomass. Quagga individuals there were much larger than those of D. polymorpha, while elsewhere in the Lagoon the zebra mussel still dominated the dreissenid assemblages. In summer 2016, the population structure of D. r. bugensis was substantially modified and its abundance was greatly reduced. D. polymorpha became the dominant again. In terms of biomass, after the initial domination, D. r. bugensis biomass declined substantially. The zebra mussel, although represented mostly by small individuals, has become a biomass dominant too on account of its high abundance. As of mid-2016, there has been no clear peak (evidencing the appearance of juveniles) in the quagga size distribution. The recent dreissenid samples show a large share of empty quagga shells, an effect not observed earlier. Therefore, it is plausible that the older immigrant, so far at least, has outcompeted the newcomer.

Authors provide the state of knowledge on marine non-indigenous species in waters off Slovenia. According to published records and authors unpublished data at least 15 non-indigenous species were up to date recorded in the Slovenian part of the Adriatic sea. Eleven species were considered as established and four species as casual. The vectors of introduction are various, comprising Lessepsian migration, mariculture and shipping. The majority of non-indigenous taxa were recorded in the mediolittoral belt and coastal lagoons. The low number of non-indigenous species so far recorded in the Slovenian part of the Adriatic sea could be explained by various factors. Among them, the most reasonable are the lack of scientific attention, the small proportion of Slovenian Sea and low winter temperatures, which represents a physiological barrier for the survival of newcomers. The number of recorded species is far from being satisfactory. Therefore, we expect that the list of non-indigenous species will be enlarged in the nearby future.

The article considers the phenomenon of “youth bulges” - the appearance in the population structure of numerous youth cohorts. The connection between the emergence of a “youth bulges” in society and the risks of political destabilization, which attracted the attention of a number of experts in the field of political demography, is analyzed and confirmed by examples from countries of two regions - Europe and Asia, where, unlike Europe, the influence of the phenomenon of “youth bulges” on political stability was not previously considered systematically. A significant layer of scientific literature has been analyzed and systematized, considering economic factors that increase the risk of political destabilization against the backdrop of a “youth bulges”; the key factors of an economic nature and their relationship with each other are highlighted.
