The use of distributed generations (DGs) in distribution systems has been common in recent years. Some DGs work stand alone and it is possible to improve the system reliability by connecting these DGs to system. The joint point of DGs is an important parameter in the system designing. In this paper, a novel methodology is proposed to find the optimum solution in order to make a proper decision about DGs connection. In the proposed method, a novel objective function is introduced which includes the cost of connector lines between DGs and network and the cost of energy not supplied (CENS) savings. Furthermore, an analytical approach is used to calculate the CENS decrement. To solve the introduced nonlinear optimization programming, the genetic algorithm (GA) is used. The proposed method is applied to a realistic 183-bus system of Tehran Regional Electrical Company (TREC). The results illustrate the effectiveness of the method to improve the system reliability by connecting the DGs work stand alone in proper placements.

Although sea and ocean waves have been widely acknowledged to have the potential of providing sustainable and renewable energy, the emergence of a self-sufficient and mature industry is still lacking. An essential condition for reaching economic viability is to minimise the cost of electricity, as opposed to simply maximising the converted energy at the early design stages. One of the tools empowering developers to follow such a virtuous design pathway is the techno-economic optimisation. The purpose of this paper is to perform a holistic optimisation of the PeWEC (pendulum wave energy converter), which is a pitching platform converting energy from the oscillation of a pendulum contained in a sealed hull. Optimised parameters comprise shape; dimensions; mass properties and ballast; power take-off control torque and constraints; number and characteristics of the pendulum; and other subcomponents. Cost functions are included and the objective function is the ratio between the delivered power and the capital expenditure. Due to its ability to effectively deal with a large multi-dimensional design space, a genetic algorithm is implemented, with a specific modification to handle unfeasible design candidate and improve convergence. Results show that the device minimising the cost of energy and the one maximising the capture width ratio are substantially different, so the economically-oriented metric should be preferred.

AbstractThis paper presents a combination of fuzzy and genetic algorithm (GA)-based methodology for simultaneous optimum allocation and sizing of distributed generations (DGs) and shunt capacitors (SCs) together in distribution systems. The objectives of reduction of active power and reactive power supply, reduction of real power loss and improvement of branch current capacity, voltage profile and voltage stability are considered. The combination of shunt capacitors with both unity power factor DGs and lagging power factor DGs also considered for analyzing the performance of the distribution systems. Simulation results are demonstrated to show the advantage of proposed fuzzy genetic algorithm-based technique over conventional multiobjective approach and loss sensitivity-based optimization techniques reported in the literature.

Brazil is currently undergoing changes to regulations on distributed generation (DG), specifically for solar energy micro-generation. The changes proposed by the Brazilian Regulatory Agency suggest that only the cost of energy be compensated to investors. The service costs and other charges related to energy tariffs must be divided among consumers. Investors with existing installations and class entities have contested these proposals, calling them “sun-fees”. To date, no scientific papers have been published discussing these changes. The new regulations propose an end to cross subsidies, where all consumers (even those who do not have DG) pay for the transmission and distribution systems. This study compares the economic feasibility of micro-generation before and after implementing the new standards proposed by the regulatory agency. We used data on average electrical energy demand, energy price, and solar radiation in different regions. The national averages were used as a base comparison with other scenarios. The results show that projects are viable for all analyzed scenarios, however, after implementing the proposed changes, the discounted payback time is extended. This, however, does not make projects unfeasible.

The optimization of the size of wind farms is little studied in the literature. The objective of this study is to renew the existing wind farms by inserting new wind turbines with different characteristics. To evaluate our approach, a genetic algorithm was chosen to optimize our objective function, which aims to maximize the power of the wind farm studied at a reasonable cost, the Jensen wake model was chosen for the power calculation of the park. The results obtained from the simulation on the Horns-rev wind farm showed a significant increase in energy and a relatively reasonable cost of energy.
