AbstractThe compound barium bis{bis-(4,6-di-tert-butyl[1,2-benzenediolato(2-)-O,O′]borate)} has been prepared by the addition of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol to a solution of boric acid and Ba(OH)2 and characterized by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The title compound crystallized in the triclinic space group P-1, with cell parameters a = 13.280(2) Å, b = 15.755(3) Å, and c = 16.980(3) Å, α = 71.691(2)o, β = 79.528(3)o, γ = 80.741(3)o, Z = 1, and V = 3296.1(10) Å3. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to a final R = 0.0459 for 14370 reflections with I > 2σ(I). One of the arylspiroboronate ester counterions is bound to the barium atom in a rare example of the η1 bonding mode via a single oxygen of one of the catecholato groups. The coordination sphere around the barium is complemented by four molecules of water, one molecule of acetone and two bridging water molecules, connecting to an adjacent barium atom.

Protonation of the trisulphur trinitride ion, S3N3−, with tetrafluoroboric acid yields the ring-contracted S-amino thiodithiazyl salt, S3N2NH2+BF4−. The crystal and molecular structure of this salt has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystals are triclinic, space group P1, with a = 5.445(2), b = 7.346(3), c = 9.473(5) Å, α = 85.89(4), β = 83.92(3), γ = 82.13(3)°, V = 372.6(4) Å3, Dc = 2.02 g cm−3, and Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to give a final R = 0.060. The structure of the five-membered ring with a single exocyclic NH2 group bonded to sulphur is discussed in relation to other S3N2NR derivatives. The reasons for the instability of six-membered rings of the type S3N3R are discussed in the light of MNDO molecular orbital calculations on an S3N3H model.

A novel dinuclear bismuth(III) coordination compound, [Bi2(C7H3NO4)2(N3)2(C12H8N2)2]·4H2O, has been synthesized by an ionothermal method and characterized by elemental analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular structure consists of one centrosymmetric dinuclear neutral fragment and four water molecules. Within the dinuclear fragment, each BiIIIcentre is seven-coordinated by three O atoms and four N atoms. The coordination geometry of each BiIIIatom is distorted pentagonal–bipyramidal (BiO3N4), with one azide N atom and one bridging carboxylate O atom located in axial positions. The carboxylate O atoms and water molecules are assembledviaO—H...O hydrogen bonds, resulting in the formation of a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. Two types of π–π stacking interactions are found, with centroid-to-centroid distances of 3.461 (4) and 3.641 (4) Å.

3,5-Diphenyl-1,2-dithiolium-4-olate (1) reacts with aniline to form 1-phenylimino-2-phenylamino-3-phenylindene (3a). Under suitable conditions, 6-phenylbenzo[b]indeno[1,2-e]-1,2-thiazine is also formed. These structures are confirmed by alternative syntheses. The molecular structure of 3a has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 3a crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with unit cell dimensions a = 20.777(3) Å, b = 6.130(3) Å, c = 31.327(3) Å, 3 = 99.59(1)°, and Z = 8. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least squares to a final R = 0.055. The molecular structure of 3a shows the three phenyl containing substituents to have the planes of their ring systems tilted between 40° and 60° from the plane of the indene system due to steric repulsions.

The crystal structure of 1,4-diphenyl-2,2′,3,3′,5,5′,6,6′-octamethylcyclo-1,4-diphospha-2,3,5,6-tetrasilahexane, (PhPSi2Me4)2, has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c, with a = 9.866(1), b = 11.921(1), and c = 11.324(2) Å, β = 104.31(1)°, Z = 2, and ρcalcd = 1.15 g/cm3. The structure was solved by direct methods and was refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to a final R of 0.060 and Rw of 0.078, for 1173 reflections with intensities greater than 3σ. The (PhPSi2Me4)2 molecule lies on a crystallographic centre of symmetry, and the six-membered P2Si4 ring has a chair conformation with equatorial phenyl groups. The endocyclic angles at P (104.4(1)°) and Si (104.9(2)°) are intermediate between those found in cyclic hexaphosphine and hexasilane molecules, and the Si—Si and P—Si distances of 2.345(3) and 2.252(4) Å, respectively, correspond to single bond lengths, with no appreciable evidence for secondary pπ → dπ bonding between phosphorus and silicon. The Si—C (1.867(8) Å) and P—C (1.828(7) Å) bond lengths are also normal. The variations in the Si—P—C (101.6(2)°, 108.6(2)°), P—Si—C (range 106.2(3)–120.0(3)°), and Si—Si—C (range 105.8(3)–113.7(3)°) angles indicate that the positions of the exocyclic methyl and phenyl groups are influenced by both intra- and intermolecular steric forces.

A novel zinc organophosphonate was synthesized under solvothermal conditions by using [piperazine-1,4-diyldi (methylene)] bis (phosphonic acid) as a organic ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 crystallized in the triclinic space group P-1 (No. 2). Compound 1 formulated as Zn (O3PCH2NHC4H8NHCH2PO3)·H2O. Compound 1 featured a 3D open-framework. Notably, the structure of compound 1 featured one-dimensional channel in the [00 direction. Water molecules were located in these channels. Further characterizations of compound 1 have been performed, including X-ray powder diffraction, IR, ICP and CHN analyses.

The mixed-ligand picolinato (pic) complex of Cu(II) with 4-methylimidazole (4-MeIm), [Cu(pic)2(4-MeIm)2], was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, spectroscopic methods (UV/vis and FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction. In the slightly distorted octahedral cis-bis(4-methylimidazole)bis(picolinato)copper(II) complex, the pic ligands are coordinated to the Cu(II) ion as bidentate N,O-donors forming chelate rings. The 4-MeIm ligands are N-coordinated in cis positions. The complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group p̅1 with unit cell parameters a = 9.204(5), b = 9.498(5), c = 13.095(5) Å , α = 90.395(5), β = 101.687(5), γ = 112.291(5)° and Z = 2. Hydrogen bondings and C-H ··· π interactions occur between picolinato and methylimidazole ligands of neighboring complex molecules. The thermal decomposition of the complex is described.

A series of thallium ternary chalcogenides with the composition Tl2x In2(1−x)Se2, x = 0.2, 0.3,...0.9, have been studied by X-ray powder and, for some of them, single-crystal diffraction. They are tetragonal, space group I4/mcm, Z = 4, and isostructural with the binary semiconductor TlSe. Their crystal structures have been solved by direct methods and refined by the Rietveld method to a precision which is satisfactorily comparable to single-crystal results. As x is changed from x = 0.2 to x = 0.9 the unit-cell parameters and volume decrease or increase following Kurnakov's law, which is valid for solid solutions. Refined positional parameters of Se, In—Se and Tl—Se bond lengths vary with x also according to the same law. The distribution of In and Tl cations in 4(a) and 4(b) sites depends on the stoichiometry x and the crystals are composed of [In3+Se2]_{\infty}^- chains along the c axis in which InSe4 tetrahedra share edges; the chains are interconnected with Tl+(In+) ions.

The synthesis of triphenyltelluroniumsulfide (Ph3TeS)4 is described together with a NMR-spectroscopic characterization. The structure of the title compound was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystals of triphenyltelluroniumsulfide are triclinic (space group P1) with the cell parameters a = 1178.0(3) pm. b = 1295.8(6) pm. c = 1298.7(4) pm, α = 77.67(3)°, β = 82.18(2)°, γ = 66.00(2)° (V = 1766(1) × 106 pm3) and Z = 2. The compound appears to form a step-like structure of two [Ph3TeS]2 units and crystallizes with two molecules of CH2Cl2 per unit cell.
