Abstract The issue of open innovation has become a popular topic in recent years. The literature review revealed that within the Open Innovation theories and its aspects, some elements were differently defined which showed a space for further exploration. The main aim of the paper is to synthesize knowledge about open innovation and to create a basic model of the open innovation environment in terms of influencing factors and to identify relevant actors, that may be part of this process. The primary method was a secondary survey aimed at the analyze of 24 definitions and integrating scientific definitions of open innovation, its factors, barriers and relevant players. By synthesizing this knowledge, we have developed a basic model of open innovation factors and identified relevant players in this process. This paper is part of the author's dissertation thesis, which aims to design and test an open innovation model in the service sector. The model will include all factors contained in this article. Further model could be used as an effective tool for implementing open innovation and evaluating its usefulness for theories and praxis as well.

Open innovation has gained popularity in recent years. But is the concept new or does it express old realities? The literature review of this case study found that the term “open innovation” is recent and that its development has been facilitated by technological innovations. The case study collected data over a period of eight months from an agrifood SME in Quebec, Canada. The aim was to go beyond the basic model of open innovation and integrate dynamic, absorptive and appropriative capacities into a new working open innovation model. Initial results show that components associated with the basic open innovation model such as intellectual property, joint R&D and co-product development are present as well as certain organizational capacities. The difficulty of applying the concept is due to its interactions rather than its components taken individually. The study concludes that further work is needed to extend the applicability and the foundations of open innovation.

The SMEs represent an important factor of growth in both developed and developing countries, into which, however, they face different obstacles in the process of innovation. This paper analyses how open communication and collaboration can help SMEs in their struggle for sustainable innovation and profitable market competition. Based on a literature review, a number of obstacles that SMEs have to overcome in their current activity and possible support to be competitive are revealed. The main benefits and particularities of implementing open innovation in SMEs are presented. The necessity of a supportive business environment for SMEs is demonstrated. An improved open innovation model for SMEs is developed.

With the popularity of artificial intelligence, big data and Internet of Things, business nowadays is featured with technology advancement, open innovation and collaboration. This happens particularly in the manufacturing sectors, known as the Industrial 4.0 or the 4th Industrial Revolution. Alongside this trend, there is also a movement towards servitisation and service innovation. In the financial service sector, FinTech firms, traditional large firms, intermediaries, users and regulators are actively engaged together to develop a smart system of banking, investing and insurance service. Nevertheless, the sector is facing challenges in relation to security, trust and external disruptions. To solve this, first, this article builds an ambidextrous open innovation model with multi-dimensions, which are motivated by the arriving of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Second, this article applies the ambidextrous open innovation model with multi-dimensions to the financial sectors to validate the model basically. Third, this model is applied to several research studies to obtain additional validation of it.

AbstractIn recent years, Open Innovation (OI) and crowdsourcing have been very popular topics in the innovation management literature, attracting significant interest and attention, and inspiring a rich production of publications. Although these two topics share common themes and address similar managerial challenges, to the best of our knowledge, there is no systematic literature review that digs deep into the intersection of both fields. To fill in this gap a joint review of crowdsourcing and OI topics is both timely and of interest. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to carry out a comprehensive, systematic, and objective review of academic research to help shed light on the relationship between OI and crowdsourcing. For this purpose, we reviewed the literature published on these two topics between 2008 and 2019, applying two bibliometric techniques, co-citation and co-word analysis. We obtained the following results: (i) we provide a qualitative analysis of the emerging and trending themes, (ii) we discuss a characterization of the intersection between OI and crowdsourcing, identifying four dimensions (strategic, managerial, behavioral, and technological), (iii) we present a schematic reconceptualization of the thematic clusters, proposing an integrated view. We conclude by suggesting promising opportunities for future research.
