This article is concerned with how “metafunctions of language” is theorized by M.A.K. Halliday in his Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, and how the metafunctional framework can be used to analyse and interpret the meaning of text in social context. The paper consists of five sections. Section one introduces the topic of the article. Section two briefly examines the notion of “functions of language” in formal and non-systemic functional (non-SF) models of language. Section three explores in some detail the notion of “metafunctions of language” in the SFL model. The study shows that unlike formal and non-SF models of language, SFL conceptualizes metafunctions of language not just as “uses of language” but as a fundamental property of language itself. To illustrate the applicability of the metafunctional framework to the interpretation of meaning of text in social context, Section four conducts an analysis of two stanzas in the famous Vietnamese poem “Hai sắc hoa ti-gôn” (Two Colours of Antigone) in terms of experiential, interpersonal, textual, and logical meanings. Section five provides a résumé of the issues studied in the article, pointing out the advantages of Halliday’s metafunctional framework. The study aims to contribute to our understanding of language as a system of metafunctions, opening up vast potential for the application of the SFL model to language teaching, learning, and research.

<p class="2"><span lang="EN-AU">This paper is a critical review of the notion of consciousness-raising approach in the mainstream Applied Linguistics (AL) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). It reviews the development of this approach from traditional grammarian perspectives to the recent developments in AL, and compares and contrasts this approach in AL with the notion of grammatical metaphor (GM) in SFL as a compatible resource for consciousness-raising. The paper concludes that SFL introduces new and developmental resources of consciousness at different times and spaces, which is subject to further linguistic investigations. It has also implications for the English language teaching and learning in EFL contexts. </span></p>

The theoretical framework that informs this paper is systemic functional linguistics (Halliday, 1994, Mathiessen, 1995 and Halliday and Mathiessen, 2004). This paper is not meant to be a guide for foreign language teachers on how to teach with a list of prescriptive tips to be adequately followed, but meant to highlight the importance of language teaching as a social functional activity. It stresses the need for a particular type of literacy that helps learners reflect on the ideational content of the educational input, questions beliefs and settled practices of their societies, and dwells on the educational requirement for any country to join the socio-economic revolutionary processes of Globalisation.

Mẻn Brayut text is one of Balinese texts develops in Balinese communities. The text is represented in spoken and written text held by Balinese communities. Even more, the text is supported with the statue of Mẻn Brayut found in number of temples in Bali. However, the message conveyed through the text has not been understood yet by most Balinese people. This phenomenon makes the text be interpreted differently. This is because the text has social semiotic conveyed through nonverbal language. Therefore, this research focused on social context embedded in the text of Mẻn Brayut to solve the differences interpretation. The theory used to explore used to analyze the problems is Systemic Functional Linguistics proposed by Halliday. The data were taken from written text (Suwija, 2019). The research used qualitative method since the theory is used as guidance of data collection. The data were collected based on field, tenor, and mode. The result of the result showed that the text described seriousness and sincerity of mother develops the children without having profit orientation, but she emphasizes in profound love. More abstractly, text of Mẻn Brayut represented in statue accompanied by many children placed in number of temples in Bali is interpreted as the propound God’s love for all human.

This short paper discusses the potential value of integrating linguistics theories with technological devices in English language teaching (ELT). In particular, the paper presents how systemic functional linguistics could be used to complement technology-based ELT. The paper ends with an innovative proposal of techno-linguistics (a term derived from the words technology and linguistics) as a research area to better benefit language learners in this digitalized world.

This chapter takes note of the longstanding orientation Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to discourse studies before moving to a more detailed and selective presentation of current developments in SFL with respect to discourse models, developing research methodologies, and applications to different domains. The reinterpretation of cohesion as discourse semantics (identification, negotiation, conjunction, and ideation) is reviewed with respect to metafunctions (textual, interpersonal, and ideational). This work on texture is then related to social context through the register variables tenor, field and mode alongside genre. The chapter then reviews recent SFL-inspired research that applies these models to analysis of discourse across languages, modalities of communication, and domains. Work done on school and workplace discourse has raised new questions about appropriate units of discourse structure and their relationship to register analysis. It is predicted that some of these questions may be answered by the development of improved software for discourse analyses affording greater specificity in mapping the relationships among genres.

This study aims to analyze the function and realization of the meaning contained in the Poda ni Namonangon Ribut as an ancient script text contained in the Ulu Pungkut sub-district, Mandailing Natal district. This study uses a qualitative method with the documentation method in which the data is sourced from the Medan Archeology Agency. Data were analyzed using Systemic Functional Linguistics theory on Ideational Functions and to find metaphors of ideational meaning. The results of this study indicate the distribution of the relational process dominates from Participant, Cirmuntance. The realization of the meaning of the ideational function can be seen in the first, metaphor as a description of the community who want to have offspring, where the aim of Poda is ido napajadi boru "what makes a daughter". In the second, there is a metaphor that explains the word Na sundat realized with the words "Heavy Rain", "Divorce", "Birds perch", "ravine". In the third, shows that Poda has methafora like when the expectation is reached, it is the services of the writer "Shaman”. then when the writer has explained what the ingredients are. Social context of text that has a narrative and the author's conclusion about the solution to the problem of everyone who wants offspring in his family. The tradition of writing with the mandailing script (sumurat) became quite a tradition so that there are ancient texts in the traditional house became the animist beliefs and ideologies which can be seen in Bagas Godang.

Abstract This paper, from the perspective of language learning as a meaning-making process, presents a critical review of the existing research on how pre-use, in-use, and post-use evaluation has investigated the relationship between English language teaching textbooks’ content and learners’ academic literacy development. The paper shows that previous research on these three types of evaluation examined English language teaching textbooks’ effect on English learners’ academic literacy development in an unprincipled and macro way. The research gap identified in these previous studies calls for an improved textbook evaluation framework that integrates a principled learning theory while simultaneously emphasizing macro-constructs (e.g., context) and micro-linguistic features needed for academic literacy development. To this end, this paper proposes a framework informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics-related constructs (e.g., genre, register, meta-meanings, and lexico-grammar system) to optimize the evaluation of English language teaching textbook content.
