The article discusses the semantics of the image of an eagle in the drama “Toyon Kyyl” (The Lord Eagle) by a Sakha director Eduard Novikov. The research is based on various methods, including linguo-cultural analysis, structural semiotic analysis, and interpretative methods of analysis. Eagle is one of the oldest symbols used by various peoples of the world. The Sakha called eagle toyon kyyl (lord of birds) or toyon bulur (lord who brings misfortune). In modern context the image of the eagle represents nature, while the relationship between the eagle and the characters represent the relationship between people and nature. Humanity, just like that young boy Mikiper who scared away the eagle in his childhood, is destroying the natural world. However, the punishment for this act is waiting in the future. The article discusses the main symbols of the film, connected with the image of an eagle: the Sun, a tree, an egg. The Sun (mark of the Upper World) is connected with divine punishment and divine eye. An egg, floating in the world ocean, contained the Universe inside of it, according to myths of the peoples of the world. In the analysed film the eggs symbolise children, offspring, and thus the future. A special role in the film is given to an old tengke tit larch tree, which symbolises the world tree, while the eagle on its top is the mark of the Upper World.

World population is continuously and rapidly growing, urban areas representing the future. Citizens’ needs and requirements are becoming the focus points of urban development strategies. Therefore, developing sustainable strategies is essential for boosting the creation and development of more inclusive communities. This paper aims to present various ways in which urbanization is changing the world as we know it, smart urban planning contributing to smart urban areas’ development, formed by strong inclusive communities, giving as example different cities around the globe that have implemented successful projects. The methodology used to carry out this research is both bibliographic – opting to study and present the work of specialists in the field, authors from Romania and abroad, and empirical – formed by a case study on various smart cities around the world that have found ways to cope with the new change the world is facing today. The digital space is starting to be a very important issue in the evolution of smart cities, contributing at facilitating and improving the relationship between state and citizens. Although technology is a significant element, citizens and public institutions must be open to collaborate in order to find and implement the best solutions for solving communities’ problems.

Kazakhstan’s economic policy results in 1995-2005 are considered in the article. In particular, the analysis of the relationship between economic growth and some indicators of nation states - population, territory, direct access to the World Ocean, and extraction of crude petroleum - is presented. Basic problems in the sphere of economic policy in Kazakhstan are formulated.

This chapter examines Merata Mita’s Mauri, the first fiction feature film in the world to be solely written and directed by an indigenous woman, as an example of “Fourth Cinema” – that is, a form of filmmaking that aims to create, produce, and transmit the stories of indigenous people, and in their own image – showing how Mita presents the coming-of-age story of a Māori girl who grows into an understanding of the spiritual dimension of the relationship of her people to the natural world, and to the ancestors who have preceded them. The discussion demonstrates how the film adopts storytelling procedures that reflect a distinctively Māori view of time and are designed to signify the presence of the mauri (or life force) in the Māori world.

Abstract Maritime cultural heritage is under increasing threat around the world, facing damage, destruction, and disappearance. Despite attempts to mitigate these threats, maritime cultural heritage is often not addressed to the same extent or with equal resources. One approach that can be applied towards protecting and conserving threatened cultural heritage, and closing this gap, is capacity development. This paper addresses the question of how capacity development can be improved and adapted for the protection of maritime cultural heritage under threat. It asserts that capacity development for maritime cultural heritage can be improved by gaining a more comprehensive and structured understanding of capacity development initiatives through applying a consistent framework for evaluation and analysis. This allows for assessment and reflection on previous or ongoing initiatives, leading to the implementation of more effective initiatives in the future. In order to do this, a model for classifying initiatives by ten parameters is proposed. It is then applied to a number of case studies featuring initiatives in the Middle East and North Africa region. This is followed by a discussion of how conclusions and themes drawn from the examination and evaluation of the case study initiatives can provide a deeper understanding of capacity development efforts, and an analysis of how the parameter model as a framework can aid in improving capacity development for threatened maritime cultural heritage overall.

Anthropocene on the National Stage: Maaseudun tulevaisuus (“Future of the Countryside”, The Finnish National Theatre 2014) and the Interregnum We Live in The article argues that entering the Anthropocene has pushed us into a cultural interregnum. However, the discussions of the Anthropocene and the concept of interregnum seldom meet. In this article it is assumed that this stems from the fact that the concept of interregnum pertains to the 20th century critical epistème and as such, it is a mismatch with the current theoretical impulse of turning toward affects, ontology and becoming. However, the case is made that we should not let go of the critical legacy altogether: to analyse struggle over and between epistemologies, we need critical concepts. Research material in the article consists of the manuscript of Leea Klemola’s 2014 Finnish National theatre production “The Future of the Countryside”, and nine articles from the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat’s digital archive, published during the play’s opening week. “The Future of the Countryside” asks what could the relationship between humans and their companion species be like, were it not based on the idea that it is legitimate for humans to treat the rest of the world as resources. However, the media brouhaha surrounding the play’s opening night hardly touches upon this theme at all. Instead, the nation and the limits of national culture are repeatedly evoked as the primary explanatory framework. In this way, the “Future of the Countryside” provides an illustrative case of the interregnum we live in, understood as old epistemologies losing ground but still keeping the new from emerging.

This study uses the material transmission history of Dante’s innovative first book, the Vita nuova (New Life), to intervene in recent debates about literary history, reconceiving the relationship between the work and its reception, and investigating how different material manifestations and transformations in manuscripts, printed books, translations, and adaptations participate in the work. Just as Dante frames his collection of thirty-one poems surrounded by prose narrative and commentary as an attempt to understand his own experiences through the experimental form of the book, so later scribes, editors, and translators use different material forms to embody their own interpretations of it. Traveling from Boccaccio’s Florence to contemporary Hollywood with stops in Emerson’s Cambridge, Rossetti’s London, Nerval’s Paris, Mandelstam’s Russia, De Campos’s Brazil, and Pamuk’s Istanbul, this study builds on extensive archival research to show how Dante’s strange poetic forms continue to challenge readers. In contrast to a conventional reception history’s chronological march, each chapter analyzes how one of these distinctive features has been treated over time, offering new perspectives on topics such as Dante’s love of Beatrice, his relationship with Guido Cavalcanti, and his attraction to another woman, while highlighting Dante’s concern with the future, as he experiments with new ways to keep Beatrice alive for later readers. Deploying numerous illustrations to show the entanglement of the work’s poetic form and its material survival, Dante’s New Life of the Book offers a fresh reading of Dante’s innovations, demonstrating the value of this philological analysis of the work’s survival in the world.

Abstract This paper analyzes one kind of Ballardian landscape, wastelands created by nuclear explosions, and aims at interpreting them as a study of the un-making of the human-made world. Cityscapes of ruins, crumbling concrete concourses and parking lots, abandoned barracks and military stations, radiation and mutations make Nagasaki, Eniwetok and Mururoa wasteland snap-shots of the future. In the minds of the protagonists, the un-made landscape is strangely soothing; they are attracted by the post-nuclear imagery and gladly embrace the upcoming catastrophe. Nagasaki, Eniwetok and Mururoa are the harbingers of a future where one can experience the nirvana of non-being. In this paper, I discuss the Ballardian un-making of the world and, hopefully, point to the subliminal meaning of atomic explosions in his works. To do this, I first discuss the references to the atomic bomb in Ballard's non-fiction (A User's Guide to the Millennium, J.G.Ballard Conversations). Then, I isolate and describe the subsequent stages of the un-making of the world using his depictions of Nagasaki (Empire of the Sun, The Atrocity Exhibition); Eniwetok (The Atrocity Exhibition, The Terminal Beach), and Mururoa (Rushing to Paradise). Finally, I suggest a hypothesis explaining the subliminal meaning of nuclear bombs with reference to Freud's theories.

This chapter examines the dark themes and moods that characterize some of Ray Bradbury's short stories, a reflection of his deep ambivalence toward an increasingly destabilized world. Bradbury never developed a postmodernist dislike of where technology and science had brought the world, but he always remained wary of where science may lead mankind in the future. This predictive urge led him to use his science fiction stories to work through some of the issues left unresolved in his failed novels. This chapter discusses “—And the Moon Be Still as Bright” and several of Bradbury's tales, written in the 1946–1948 period, which are distinguished from other Bradbury stories of the period by their science fiction trappings, their unrelieved darkness, the lack of any familiar points of reference, and their relative obscurity within the Bradbury canon. It also considers the relationship stories that eased Bradbury through his impasse with Modernist themes.

RésuméL’encyclique papale Laudato Si’ traite de questions environnementales en proposant une synthèse de la foi et de la raison. Prenant en compte la variété des réactions à cette encyclique, l’auteur vise à adopter une approche indépendante de celle-ci. Après un exposé de sa synthèse, il avance qu’elle n’est pas pleinement convaincante parce qu’elle ne prend pas suffisamment en compte les objections rationnelles qui sont opposées à la vision chrétienne de la création et de l’eschatologie. Ce défaut affaiblit l’argumentation de l’encyclique. L’auteur met aussi en question l’usage insistant, dans l’encyclique, de la personnification pour décrire le monde, et sa tendance panenthéiste. On peut estimer et vouloir prendre soin du monde naturel sans décrire la relation de Dieu au monde dans les termes de Laudate Si’. Ces critiques viennent cependant dans un contexte de chaude appréciation du contenu de l’encyclique et d’une exhortation à prendre au sérieux l’exemple personnel de François d’Assise.SummaryThe Papal Encyclical Laudato Si’ approaches environmental questions by offering a synthesis of faith and reason. Acknowledging the range of responses which Laudato Si’ has received, this article tries to adopt an independent approach to the encyclical. After describing the synthesis, it argues that it is not entirely persuasive because the encyclical does not show enough awareness of rational objections that are brought against the Christian understanding of creation and of eschatology. This weakens the argument of the encyclical on its own terms. The article also raises questions about both Laudato Si’s emphasis on personified language to describe the world and its panentheism. We can value and care for the natural world without describing the relationship of God to the world in the terms of Laudato Si’. However, these criticisms are placed in a context of warm appreciation for the encyclical and an exhortation for us to take the personal example of Francis of Assisi seriously.ZusammenfassungDie päpstliche Enzyklika Laudato Si’ befasst sich mit Umweltfragen und bietet dabei eine Synthese von Glaube und Vernunft. Der vorliegende Artikel nimmt das weite Spektrum von Antworten wahr, welche Laudato Si’ hervorgerufen hat, doch er versucht, einen unabhängigen Ansatz im Blick auf die Enzyklika zu vertreten. Nach einer Beschreibung der obigen Synthese argumentiert er, dass diese nicht gänzlich überzeugt, weil die Enzyklika die rationalen Erwiderungen nicht ausreichend wahrnimmt, die dem christlichen Verständnis von Schöpfung und Eschatologie entgegengesetzt werden. Dadurch entkräftet die Enzyklika ihre eigene Argumentation. Der Artikel wirft des weiteren Fragen auf sowohl zum Schwerpunkt, den Laudato Si‘ auf eine personifizierte Sprache legt, mit der sie die Welt beschreibt, als auch zu ihrem Panentheismus. Wir können die natürliche Welt wertschätzen und Sorge für sie tragen, ohne dass wir die Beziehung Gottes zu dieser Welt mit den Worten von Laudato Si‘ beschreiben müssen. Gleichwohl ist diese Kritik eingebettet in eine wohlwollende Wertschätzung der Enzyklika und die gleichzeitige Ermahnung an uns, das persönliche Vorbild von Franz von Assisi ernst zu nehmen.

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between intellectual capital efficiency and the firm's profitability. The importance of intellectual capital (IC) and the related philosophy of the knowledge economy have captured the attention of researchers and business enterprises in the World Trade Organization (WTO) era. IC is widely recognized as a tool that is critical to running a successful business in a highly competitive environment. Various models have been introduced to measure the numerous facets of IC, including the Skandia navigator, Tobin's Q, and value added intellectual coefficient (VAIC). This article examines the role of IC efficiency in the firm’s net profit using the VAIC developed by Ante Pulic (1998). It also investigates its correlation with the firm’s profitability, using regression models.
