The determination of blood parameters allowed us to establish that anemia develops in a number of infectious diseases, which is called "anemia of inflammation" or anemia of chronic diseases. The article presents a rare clinical case of the development of anemia of the inflammatory response, accompanied by a marked decrease in the content of hemoglobin (less than 110 g/l), hematocrit (less than 30%) and red blood cells (less than 3,0 х 1012/l), in a child with early congenital syphilis with symptoms of: specific rhinitis, papular infiltration, pemphigus, hepatosplenomegaly and damage to the nervous system. As a result of specific treatment with water-soluble benzylpenicillin salt at the rate of 100 U/kg of body weight for 28 days, and transfusion of erythrocyte mass of 15 ml/kg of child weight, there was a parallel regression of clinical manifestations of syphilis with positive dynamics of serological reactions and restoration of the number of red blood cells and the concentration of hemoglobin in the blood.

We present a computer-aided videodensitometric method for the determination of oxygen saturation in red blood cells flowing through capillaries of the hamster cheek pouch retractor muscle. The optical density (OD) of red blood cells is determined at two wavelengths. At the first, 431 nm, there is a maximum difference between absorption by oxygen deoxyhemoglobin. At the second, 420 nm, absorption is equal for the two absorbing species (isosbestic wavelength). In capillaries of the retractor muscle a relationship between oxygen saturation (S) and the following OD ratio was obtained as S = -1.71 (OD431/OD420) + 2.20. The error (95% confidence interval) in oxygen saturation associated with a determination of the OD ratio is estimated to be +/- 4.8%. The computerization of the method employs a frame-by-frame analysis of the light intensity over a selected capillary segment. The light intensity waveform along the segment is digitized and the minimum (I) and maximum (I0) light intensities are used to compute an optical density (OD = log10 [I0/I]). These minimum and maximum intensities correspond to the presence and absence of a red blood cell, respectively. The method permits the off-line analysis of videotaped scenes and provides a means of assessing the extent of temporal and spatial heterogeneity of oxygen saturation in selected capillary networks. The method has been developed for use in capillaries in transilluminated striated muscle but should be generally applicable to the measurement of capillary oxygen saturation in other tissues.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of experimental infection by Escherichia coli on some blood parameters and histopathological changes in male rats to reach this objective twenty male rats (Rattus norvigicus) were divided into two groups, housed under same conditions of water, feed, temperature, light and humidity. The first one served as control group, while the second was experimentally infected with Ecoli by administration of 2ml / rat of (1×109) colony forming unit/ml of E-coli. Five days later blood were obtained from animals by cardiac puncture to measure the total and differential white blood cells count hemoglobin concentration packed cells volume red blood cells count, and thrombocytes count. One animal from each group was killed and histopathological examination was done for intestine kidney liver and spleen to detect the effect of infection on these organs. The results revealed a significant increase in total leukocytes count (P<005) in infected group while the differential count showed a significant increase in neutrophils and significant decrease in lymphocytes (P< 0.05) in same group. There were a significant decrease in hemoglobin concentration packed cell volume and non significant decrease in red blood cells count. While thrombocytes count showed a significant decrease in infected group compared with control group (P<0.05). The histopathological examination of infected male rats intestine was demonstrated mild diffuse inflammation which include increased numbers of neutrophile in tissue intraepithelial lymphocytes and goblet cells In kidney renal tubules showed extensive epithelial swelling with decreased lumen space and generalized necrotic changes with interstitial hemorrhage in renal cortex. In liver hepatocytes were swollen with decreased sinusoidal spaces and widely distributed necrotic foci were seen. There is extensive splenic necrosis with infiltration of leukocytes from white pulp to red pulp of spleen.
