Soil salinity is an important issue for agriculture and the environment, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Soil salinity influences agricultural productivity and soil properties. It is strongly related to irrigation and groundwater. This review article considers collecting published scientific knowledge about the soil salinity issue. It considers introducing the soil salinity, its types, its causes, its impacts on agriculture and the environment, its measuring methods, and its reclamation methods. The article considers also the remote sensing technology and its use in monitoring and predicting soil salinity. This article was prepared to help farmers, students, scientists, and researchers in agricultural and environmental sectors. Conserving affected lands with salinity is costly and time consuming, and choosing the right crops and plant species is the most important method to deal with this issue.

Soil salinity is one of the most important problems affecting many areas of the world. Saline soils present in agricultural areas reduce the annual yields of most crops. This research deals with the soil salinity mapping of Seyhan plate of Adana district in Turkey from the years 2009 to 2010, using remote sensing technology. In the analysis, multitemporal data acquired from LANDSAT 7-ETM+ satellite in four different dates (19 April 2009, 12 October 2009, 21 March 2010, 31 October 2010) are used. As a first step, preprocessing of Landsat images is applied. Several salinity indices such as NDSI (Normalized Difference Salinity Index), BI (Brightness Index) and SI (Salinity Index) are used besides some vegetation indices such as NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), RVI (Ratio Vegetation Index), SAVI (Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) and EVI (Enhamced Vegetation Index) for the soil salinity mapping of the study area. The field’s electrical conductivity (EC) measurements done in 2009 and 2010, are used as a ground truth data for the correlation analysis with the original band values and different index image bands values. In the correlation analysis, two regression models, the simple linear regression (SLR) and multiple linear regression (MLR) are considered. According to the highest correlation obtained, the 21st March, 2010 dataset is chosen for production of the soil salinity map in the area. Finally, the efficiency of the remote sensing technology in the soil salinity mapping is outlined.

Remote sensing technology has become an important method to rapidly acquireing of planting layout and composition of regional crops. It is very important to accurately master the planting area of Chinese medicine crops in the Characteristic planting area because it relations to accurately master the cultivation of Chinese medicine crops, formulate related policies and adjustment of crop planting structure. The author puts forward a method of using remote sencing technology for momitoring Chinese medicine which has good applicability and generalization. This paper took Qiaocheng District of Bozhou as an example to Verify the feasibility of the method, providing a reference for solving the problem of interpretation and extraction of Chinese medicinal materials in the region.

The remote sensing technology is used to analyze the periodic changes of precipitation in the semi-arid areas of northern China and provide a reference basis for precipitation prediction. Authors were based on GPS observation data and corresponding ground meteorological parameters to obtain the study area’s comprehensive water vapor content value and use precipitation and time to establish a linear regression equation based on the content value to express the precipitation trend change. The periodic structure and abnormal changes of the periodic precipitation series on different time scales were obtained through wavelet analysis, combined with anomaly calculations to analyze the increase and decrease precipitation characteristics. The Morlet continuous wavelet transform map was also used to reflect the periodic oscillations of precipitation on different time scales. The wavelet variance map was used to reflect the distribution of regional precipitation with scale years. The authors analyzed the cycle change characteristics of the comprehensive precipitation series in Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, and Dalian. They concluded that the annual precipitation in the four regions showed a decreasing trend in 50 years. And through the wavelet cycle frequency-domain relationship change law, the change characteristics of precipitation in the northern semi-arid area in the entire time domain were obtained.

Submarine pipelines must be designed to resist wave and current induced hydrodynamic forces especially in and near the surf zone. They are buried as protection against forces in the surf zone, however this procedure is not always feasible particularly on a movable sea bed. For this reason the characteristics of the sediment transport on the construction site of beaches should be investigated. In this investigation, the application of the remote sensing method is introduced in order to determine and observe the coastal morphology, so that submarine pipelines may be protected against undesirable seabed movement.
