During the course of fixed orthodontic therapy, patients should be instructed to eat specific food stuffs and beverages in order to maintain good health for the dentition and supporting structures and prevent frequent attachment debonding that prolong the treatment duration. After searching and collecting articles from 1930 till July 2021, the current review was prepared to emphasize various types of foods that should be taken during the course of fixed orthodontic therapy and to explain the effect of various food stuffs and beverages on the growth and development of craniofacial structures, tooth surfaces, root resorption, tooth movement, retention and stability after orthodontic treatment and the effect on the components of fixed orthodontic appliance.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the effect of external bleaching on the color and luminosity of inactive white-spot lesions (WSLs) present after fixed orthodontic appliance treatment as means for achieving color matching of the WSLs with adjacent tooth surfaces. Materials and Methods: Ten patients with inactive WSLs after therapy with fixed orthodontic appliances were selected. At baseline, the lightness of maxillary incisors and canines was assessed with a colorimeter. Color determinations were performed in the area of the initial lesions (F1) and at adjacent, sound enamel areas (F2). Then, anterior teeth were bleached once with a bleaching gel for 60 minutes. After a break of 14 days, in-office bleaching was followed by a 2-week home bleaching period with daily home bleaching for 1 hour. After this, color determinations were repeated. Additionally, patients were asked to fill out a questionnaire to provide information about their degree of contentment with the treatment. Results: The lightness values of both the F1 and F2 regions were significantly higher after bleaching as compared with baseline. F2 L-values increased significantly more as compared with F1, indicating a better color matching of these two areas in comparison with baseline. All patients were satisfied with the outcome of the bleaching therapy. Conclusion: External bleaching is able to satisfactorily camouflage WSLs visible after therapy with fixed orthodontic appliances.

Abstract Background: Orthodontic treatment can lead to microbial-induced gingival inflammation and aseptic periodontal inflammations. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between salivary pro-inflammatory cytokines levels with gingival health status and oral microbe loads among patients undergoing fixed orthodontic appliance treatment (FOAT). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study among a sample of 111 consecutive orthodontic patients (mean age 18.4 ± 4.4 years). Clinical examinations were conducted to assess the gingival health status employing the Modified Gingival Index (MGI), Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) and Plaque Index (PI). Salivary microbiological assessments of total aerobic and anaerobic bacteria count, streptococci count and lactobacilli count were undertaken. Salivary immunological assessments included Interleukin-1Beta (IL-1β) and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) ELISA assays. Results: The mean ± standard deviation (SD) of salivary IL-1β was 83.52 ± 85.62 pg/ml and MIF was 4.12 ± 0.96 ng/ml. Positive significant correlations between salivary IL-1β levels and salivary bacteria counts (r=0.380~0.446, P<0.001), and between salivary MIF levels and total salivary aerobic and anaerobic bacteria counts (r=0.249~0.306, P<0.01) were observed. A significant positive correlation was found between salivary IL-1β levels and BI (r=0.216, p<0.05). Conclusions: The levels of salivary IL-1β and MIF correlate with oral bacterial load among patients undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy. This has implications in understanding gingival inflammation/ aseptic periodontal inflammation during orthodontic therapy.

Based on a literature review, the objective of this study is to establish the degree of dental analysis or root resorption that allows replanted teeth to be moved using orthodontic appliance. Some aspects of avulsion and replanted teeth such as etiology, clinical approach and prognosis are considered. It is also presented a literature review of orthodontic tooth movement. According to most authors, the replant is frequently followed by analysis that doesn't allow orthodontic movement. Nevertheless, the lack of resorption signs during a minimum period of one year allows orthodontic treatment when necessary.

AbstractExtrusive tooth movements are an important resource in orthodontic treatment and allow the manipulation of teeth and periodontal tissues. They can be performed quickly or slowly, depending on the patient’s need. Rapid extrusion is indicated for cases in need of prosthetic preparation or restoration, where the bone and gingival tissues are intact, such as horizontal and oblique fractures, coronary or external root resorption, iatrogenic perforations (trepanations) and the presence of subgingival caries. The aim of this study is to describe the treatment of a patient who had a coronary fracture of the right upper central incisor, with a limit located 1 mm above the level of the bone crest. Rapid orthodontic extrusion was performed, to restore biologic distances and allow the preparation for prosthesis. It started with partial differentiated bonding of a fixed orthodontic appliance to the upper arch, to allow for a 3mm orthodontic extrusion. At the end of the extrusion, periodontal surgery was performed to increase the clinical crown and endodontic treatment. After these procedures, the case was concluded with the fixed prosthesis installation. The realization of an integrated planning allowed the restoration of aesthetics, with preservation of the functional periodontal limits for the patient. Keywords: Tooth Movement Techniques. ResumoOs movimentos dentários extrusivos constituem um recurso importante no tratamento ortodôntico e permitem a manipulação dos dentes e dos tecidos periodontais. Eles podem ser realizados de forma rápida ou lenta, dependendo da necessidade do paciente. A extrusão rápida está indicada para casos com necessidade de preparo protético ou restauração, onde os tecidos ósseo e gengival encontram-se íntegros, tais como fraturas horizontais e oblíquas, reabsorções coronárias ou radiculares externas, perfurações iatrogências (trepanações) e presença de cárie subgengival. O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever o tratamento de uma paciente que apresentava fratura coronária do incisivo central superior direito, com limite localizado 1mm acima do nível da crista óssea. Realizou-se extrusão ortodôntica rápida, com a finalidade de restabelecer as distâncias biológicas e permitir o preparo para prótese. Iniciou-se com colagem diferenciada parcial de aparelho ortodôntico fixo no arco superior, para permitir a extrusão ortodôntica de 3mm. Ao término da extrusão, realizou-se cirurgia periodontal para aumento da coroa clínica e tratamento endodôntico. Após esses procedimentos, o caso foi finalizado com a instalação da prótese fixa. A realização de um planejamento integrado permitiu o restabelecimento da estética, com preservação dos limites periodontais funcionais para a paciente.Palavras-chave: Técnicas de Movimentação Dentária. Objetive: Home oral care practices in patients undergoing orthodontic therapy are often ineffective in maintaining optimal plaque control. The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of periodontal maintenance program in subjects with established gingivitis undergoing fixed orthodontic appliance therapy for one year. Material and Methods: Forty patients undergoing fixed orthodontic appliance therapy with established chronic gingivitis were recruited for the study. As a part of a periodontal maintenance program, a pre-validated structured questionnaire evaluating oral hygiene and periodontal health was administered at the baseline as well as at the end of the study. At the baseline Gingival Bleeding Index, Gingival Index, and Bonded Bracket Plaque Index scores were recorded, Scaling and polishing procedure was performed followed by a customised Oral Hygiene Advice (OHA) session was conducted for all the study subjects. Clinical indices were assessed and OHA was conducted at the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th months of orthodontic treatment visits. Results: There was significant improvement in the clinical indices and awareness regarding oral hygiene and periodontal health level in the patients at the end of the 12th month. Conclusion: The periodontal maintenance program appeared to be effective in improving the periodontal health and awareness health awareness level about oral hygiene among patients undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy at the end of 12 months in our study population.

Introduction: During orthodontic treatment, the risk of gingivitis, periodontal disease and dental caries is increased. For good gingival health during orthodontic therapy, patients must be educated about the importance of daily oral hygiene and also given instructions on plaquecontrol techniques and how to use plaque removal devices properly. Objectives: The aim of this study was to present risk factors for gingivitis during treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances as well as methods and resources for prevention of this widespread disease. Conclusion: Maintaining proper oral hygiene is of great benefit not only for gingival health but also for the success of orthodontic treatment and maintenance of treatment results. Beside healthy gingiva, favorable habits in oral hygiene remain life-long.

Abstract Background This study was conducted in order to explore the effects of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) on the changes of salivary proteome. This prospective observational pilot study recruited 12 healthy teenage boys with malocclusion treated with a fixed orthodontic appliance and 6 appropriate control participants. Saliva samples were collected a day before and at 0, 2, 7, and 30 days after initialization of treatment, corresponding to the initial, lag, and post-lag phases of OTM. Pooled samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, ELISA, and Western blotting. To date, there is no published data on the presence of BMP molecules or their antagonists in the saliva or in the gingival cervical fluid related to orthodontic conditions. Results A total of 198 identified saliva proteins were classified based on their functional characteristics. Proteins involved in bone remodeling were observed exclusively 30 days post appliance placement, including bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), a BMP antagonist BMP-binding endothelial regulator, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3, cytoskeleton-associated protein 4, and fibroblast growth factor 5. Based on the analysis of protein interactions, BMP4 was found to have a central position in this OTM-related protein network. Conclusions The placement of a fixed orthodontic appliance induced occurrence of proteins involved in bone remodeling in the saliva at a time corresponding to the post-lag period of OTM. Limitations of this study include a relatively small sample size, limited time of monitoring patients, and the lack of interindividual variability assessment.
