DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATE CROPPING PATTERN AGAINST TOMATO-FALLOW- T. AMAN RICE IN MEDIUM HIGH LAND OF DINAJPUR

The experiment was carried out at the research field of Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Dinajpur during Mid December to end of November for two consecutive years (2017-18 and 2018-19) to develop an economically sustainable and profitable cropping pattern over existing pattern. Three alternate cropping patterns Tomato-T. Aus-T. Aman, Tomato-Summer onion-T. Aman, Tomato-Indian Spinach-T. Aman were introduced against the existing cropping pattern Tomato–Fallow–T. Aman rice. The experiment was carried out in RCB design with three replications. The highest REY (35.91 t/ha) was recorded from the cropping pattern Tomato-Indian Spinach-T. Aman followed by Tomato-Summer onion-T. Aman (31.26 t/ha) and Tomato-T. Aus-T. Aman (29.04 t/ha). The lowest REY (24.48 t/ha) was obtained from the cropping pattern Tomato-Fallow-T. Aman (Farmers practice). The gross return and gross margin were higher in the alternate cropping patterns compared to existing cropping pattern due to additional yield of T. Aus rice, Summer Onion and Indian Spinach. Therefore, farmers in Dinajpur region of Bangladesh could follow alternate cropping pattern in their medium high land where lands remain fallow after harvesting of Tomato for higher crop productivity and profitability.

The trial was conducted at Multi Location Testing (MLT) site under On-Farm Research Division, BARI, Kushtia during the last week of February, 2015 to second week of February, 2017 at farmers’ field condition to find out the productivity and profitability of three alternate cropping patterns, i.e. ACP1=Mustard (var: BARI Sarisha-15) - Mungbean (var: BARI Mung-6) - T. Aus rice (var: BRRI dhan48) - T. Aman rice (var: Binadhan-7), ACP2=Lentil (var: BARI Masur-6) - Mungbean (var: BARI Mung-6) - T. Aus rice (var: BRRI dhan48) - T. Aman rice (var:Binadhan-7), ACP3=Wheat (var: BARI Gom-28) - Mungbean (var: BARI Mung-6) - T. Aus rice (var: BRRI dhan48) - T. Aman rice (var:Binadhan-7) against the existing cropping pattern, i.e. ECP= Lentil (var: BARI Mashur-6) – Sesame (BARI Teel-3) - T. Aman (var: Binadhan-7). Findings revealed that the required mean crop durations ranged 340-356 days for one cycle in a year in four crops based cropping patterns against 293 days in existing cropping pattern. Total seed/grain yields in terms of REY of ACP1, ACP2, and ACP3 were 14.85, 16.06 and 14.92 t ha-1 year-1, respectively which were 44%, 56% and 45%, respectively higher than that of existing pattern (10.30 t ha-1 year-1). Mean production efficiency (32.53-40.43 kg ha-1day-1), land use efficiency (93.15-97.53%) and mean gross margin ( Tk. 109393 - Tk. 127834 ha-1) of all alternate cropping patterns were higher than that of existing cropping pattern (PE: 23.63 kg ha-1day-1, LUE: 80.28% and gross margin Tk. 94929 ha-1). As a result, all alternate cropping patterns were agronomically feasible and economically profitable. Among the alternate cropping patterns, ACP2=Lentil (var: BARI Masur-6) - Mungbean (var: BARI Mung-6) - T. Aus rice (var: BRRI dhan48) - T. Aman rice (var: Binadhan-7) performed the best. Therefore, farmers in Kushtia area of Bangladesh might follow the alternate cropping patterns in high and medium high land for higher crop productivity and profitability over existing cropping pattern. A series of experiments using nine treatment combinations comprising three tillage practices (zero tillage, conventional tillage and deep tillage) and three cropping patterns (wheatfallow- T. aman, wheat–mungbean-T. aman and wheat-dhaincha-T. aman) were examined in a split- plot design at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur, Bangladesh during 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 to study the effect of different tillage practices and cropping patterns on soil physical properties and crop productivity in a previously puddled soil. Soil physical properties viz. bulk density, particle density and porosity showed insignificant result due to tillage practices and cropping patterns but soil moisture retentive properties demonstrated significant outcomes. Deep tillage with dhaincha (Sesbania rostrata) and mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) biomass incorporation conserved moisture in the soil profile and improved other soil physical properties i.e. reduced the bulk density, increased porosity and available water content of soil. The highest grain yield of wheat and rice was recorded in the deep tillage with wheat-dhaincha-T. aman cropping pattern and lowest in zero tillage with fallow based cropping pattern.

The experiment was carried out at the research field of Agricultural Research Station, Rajbari, Dinajpur (Latitude: 25.63544, Longitude: 88.65144) during rabi season of 2016-2017 and 2017-18 under AEZ-1 to find out the suitable crop combination for higher productivity and economic return. Five different treatments were employed in the study viz. T1= Sole maize (60cm x×20cm), T2= Maize planting (75cm×x 25cm) + 1 row cabbage (50cm×50cm) T3= Maize paired row (150cm/37.5cm x 25cm) + 2 rows cabbage (50cm x×50cm) T4=Maize planting (60cm x×20cm )+1 row cabbage (60cm x×50cm), T5= Maize paired row (120cm/30cm× x 20cm) + 2 rows cabbage (60cm x 50cm) were evaluated. Maize grain yield in intercropped combination varied from 6.60-9.23 t ha-1. But the highest maize yield was recorded in Maize planting (60cm x 20cm) + 1 row cabbage (60cm x 50cm) followed by that in maize paired row (150/37.5cm × 25cm) +2 rows cabbage (50cm x×50cm), while the highest cabbage yield was recorded in maize planting (60cm x 20cm) + 1 row cabbage(60cm x 50cm) between maize. The highest maize equivalent yield was also obtained in maize planting (60cm x 20cm) + 1 row cabbage (60cm x 50cm) followed by that in maize paired row (150/37.5cm x 25cm) + 2 rows cabbage (50cm x 50cm). The highest gross return, gross margin and BCR were obtained in maize planting (60cm × 20cm) + 1 row cabbage (60cm x 50cm) followed by that in maize paired row (150/37.5cm x 25cm) +2 rows cabbage(50cm x 50cm) and the lowest in sole sowing of maize. The overall results indicated that among the intercrop combinations maize planting (60cm x 20cm) + 1 row cabbage (60cm x 50cm) and maize paired row (150/37.5cm x 25cm) +2 rows cabbage (50cm x 50cm) were found suitable for total productivity and economic return of the system. The experiment was carried out at the research field of Agricultural Research Station, Rajbari, Dinajpur during rabi season of 2014-15 and 2015-16 to find out suitable crop combination for higher productivity and economic return. Six different treatments viz. T1 = Sole brinjal (75 cm x 60 cm), T2 = Sole french bean (30 cm x 10 cm), T3 = Brinjal normal row (100%) + 1 line french bean between brinjal (33%), T4 = Brinjal normal row (100%) + 2 lines french bean between brinjal (66%), T5 = Brinjal paired row (100%) + 3 lines french bean between brinjal (40%) and T6 = Brinjal paired row (100%) + 4 lines french bean between brinjal (53%) were evaluated. The results revealed that the highest mean fruit yield of brinjal (44.26 t ha-1) and french bean (20.96 t ha-1) was obtained in sole cropping of component crops. Under intercropping, the highest brinjal yield (38.61 t ha-1) was recorded in brinjal normal row + 1 line french bean between brinjal, while, the highest french bean yield (16.06 t ha-1)  in brinjal normal row + 2 lines french bean between brinjal. The highest mean brinjal equivalent yield (58.72 t ha-1) and land equivalent ratio (1.50) was also obtained in brinjal normal row + 2 lines french bean between brinjal. The highest gross return (Tk. 4,69,760 ha-1), gross margin (Tk. 3,66,440 ha-1), and BCR (4.54) were obtained in brinjal normal row + 2 lines french bean between brinjal and the lowest in sole french bean. The overall results indicated that among the intercrop combinations brinjal normal row + 2 lines french bean between brinjal was found suitable for total productivity and economic return of the system. A field trial was conducted at the Regional Wheat Research Centre of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Rajshahi to study the comparative agronomic performance and economic return of four crops based cropping patterns. The cropping patterns were as follows: CP1= Transplanted Aman rice (cv. Binadhan-7)–Mustard (cv. BARI Sarisha14)–Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan28) – Transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija); CP2= T. Aman rice–Potato (cv. Diamont)–Boro rice–T.Aus rice; CP3=T. Aman rice–Mustard (cv. BARI Sarisha15)–Mungbean (cv. BARI Mung 6) –T. Aus rice and CP4 = T. Aman rice–Fallow–Boro rice–Fallow (Control). The results showed that four crops could be grown successfully one after another in a sequence in the field with three crops patterns.  The highest rice equivalent yield (REY) 25.62 t ha-1 was obtained from the cropping pattern CP2 (T. Aman rice–Potato–Boro rice–T.Aus rice) and it was followed by CP1 (18.49) and CP3 (16.03) during one year crops cycle. The highest gross margin Tk. 148882 ha-1 was also obtained from CP2  followed by CP3 (Tk. 133315 ha-1). The highest MBCR (2.24) was however, obtained from the cropping pattern CP3 (T. Aman–Mustard– Mungbean–T. Aus).  Based on overall yield performance, economic benefit and climatic situation of Rajshahi region it may be concluded that CP3 was the best pattern than others.Bangladesh Agron. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur and at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur during Rabi season of 2013-14 and 2014-15 to find out optimum sowing date of sweet corn in potato + sweet corn intercropping system for getting maximum yield and economic return. Six treatments viz., simultaneous sowing of potato and sweet corn, sweet corn sown at 10 days after potato planting (DAPP), sweet corn sown 20 DAPP, sweet corn sown 30 DAPP, sole potato and sole sweet corn were tested in this study. Sweet corn sown at 20 DPP produced the highest potato equivalent yield (Joydebpur: 41.41 t ha-1 in 2013-14 and 42.22 t ha-1 in 2014-15 and Rangpur: 42.29 t ha-1 in 2013-14 and 42.52 t ha-1 in 2014-15). The highest gross return at Joydebpur Tk. 431050 ha-1 and at Rangpur Tk. 436248 ha-1, gross margin at Joydebpur Tk. 286805 ha-1 and at Rangpur Tk. 271985 ha-1 and benefit cost ratio at Joydebpur 2.99 and at Rangpur 3.01 were observed over the years in the same treatment. In this treatment, tuber yield was reduced 3.4-4.1% in Joydebpur and 7.8-8.4% in Rangpur due to intercropping. The result indicated that sweet corn sown 20 DAPP might be suitable intercrop combination for getting maximum yield and economic return.Bangladesh Agron. J. 2015, 18(2): 15-21

Field experiments were conducted at the Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) for three consecutive years (2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14) to study the comparative agronomic performance and economic return of different cropping sequences for increasing cropping intensity and productivity. Three cropping patterns (CP1 - Transplanted Aman rice (var:Binadhan-7)– Mustard (var:BARISarisha-14)– Boro rice (var:BRRIdhan-28)– Transplanted Aus rice (var:Parija), CP2 - T. aman rice – Potato (var:Diamont) – Boro rice – T. aus rice and CP3 - T. aman rice – Mustard (var:BARISarisha-15) – Mungbean (var:BARIMung-6) –T. aus rice) are based on four crops; and one cropping pattern (CP4 = T. aman rice – Fallow – Boro rice – Fallow) with two rice crops as control were tested. Four crops can be grown successfully one after another in sequence in all the three cropping patterns tested. On an average organic matter 3.56, 4.70, 3.58 and 2 t ha-1 were added to soil in CP1, CP2, CP3 and CP4 by incorporation of biomass of respective crops. The highest rice equivalent yield (REY) 34.10, 34.02 and 33.36 t ha-1 was obtained from the cropping pattern CP2 in 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively and it was followed by CP1 and CP3. The highest average gross return (Tk.5,00,469 ha-1) and net return (Tk. 2,63,773 ha-1) were obtained from CP2 and it was followed by CP3 but the highest average B:C ratio (2.89) was obtained from the cropping pattern CP3 followed by CP2 (2.11) due to lower cost of production than in the former one. Four crops based patterns can be recommended for higher productivity, soil enrichment & economic benefit besides creating more employment opportunity.SAARC J. Agri., 13(1): 135-147 (2015)

A field experiment was conducted at MLT site, Chandina under on-farm research division (OFRD), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Cumilla during 2015-16 and 2016-17 to study an economically profitable vegetable based cropping pattern in Cumilla region for increasing cropping intensity and productivity as well as to meet the vegetable demand for farm family as well as the country. The studied vegetable based cropping patterns were CP1: Red amaranth-Potato-Coriander-Indian Spinach-Ladies finger-Cauliflower and CP2: Red amaranth-Potato-Indian spinach-Ladies finger-Coriander-Red amaranth, respectively. The results showed that six vegetable crops could be grown successfully one after another in a sequence in the farmer’s field instead of two or three crops based pattern in a piece of land. From the research results it was revealed that the highest Potato equivalent yield (PEY) 226.66 t ha-1 was obtained from cropping pattern CP1: Red amaranth-Potato-Coriander-Indian Spinach-Ladies finger-Cauliflower where the lower PEY (171.38 t ha-1) in CP2: Red amaranth-Potato-Indian spinach-Ladies finger-Coriander-Red amaranth cropping pattern. From the economic analysis, it was observed that the highest gross return Tk. 22,66,600 ha-1 was obtained from cropping pattern CP1: Red amaranth-Potato-Coriander-Indian Spinach-Ladies finger-Cauliflower which leads to the highest gross margin (Tk. 18,94,542 ha-1) as well as the highest BCR (6.09) from that cropping pattern compared to CP2. The experiment was conducted at research field of Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Comilla during November 2012 to June 2013 with a view to find out economic fertilizer dose for potato- hybrid maize relay cropping system. The potato variety BARI Alu-7 and the maize variety BARI Hybrid Maize-7 were used. Seven fertilizer combinations viz. T1= Farmers fertilizer dose of potato (FFDP) + without additional fertilizer for maize (WAFM), T2= FFDP + 100% N of recommended fertilizer dose of hybrid maize (RFDM), T3= FFDP + 100% N & 25% others of RFDM, T4= FFDP + 100% N & 50% others of RFDM, T5= Recommended fertilizer dose of potato (RFDP) +100% N of RFDM, T6= RFDP +100% N & 25% others of RFDM and T7= RFDP +100% N & 50% others of RFDM were tested on potato-hybrid maize relay cropping system. Farmer’s fertilizer dose for potato was 504-162-309 kg ha-1 NPK. Recommended fertilizer dose for potato and hybrid maize was 198-44-194-24-6-1.2 kg ha-1 NPKSZnB and 255-55-140-40-6-2 kgha-1 NPKSZnB, respectively. The highest potato equivalent yield (37.80 t ha-1) and gross return (4,53,600 Tk. ha-1) were obtained from T3 treatment. But the maximum gross margin (Tk. 3,03,075 Tk. ha-1) was found from treatment T1 and the highest benefit cost ratio (3.14) was observed in T5 whichwas close to T1 (3.06) and T6 (3.0) .The results revealed that recommended fertilizer dose of potato and 100% N from recommended fertilizer dose of hybrid maize might be used for potato hybrid maize relay cropping system for getting higher economic return at Comilla region.Bangladesh Agron. Boro (var. BRRI dhan28)-T.Aus (var. BRRI dhan48)- T. Aman (var. BRRI dhan49)-Fallow (existing cropping pattern) and Boro (var. BRRI dhan28)-T. Aus (var. BRRI dhan48)-T. Aman (var. Binadhan-11)-Mustard (var. BARI Sarisha-14) as  improved cropping pattern. The results showed that improved cropping pattern provided higher amount of grain and by-product yield. The highest mean REY (18.08 t ha-1), PE (54.61 kg ha-1 day-1), LUE (90.68 %) and SYI (77.12%) was obtained from improved cropping pattern Boro-T.Aus-T. Aman-Mustard and the lowest (14.30 t ha-1 in 2014-15 and 13.98 t ha-1 in 2015-16) from farmers existing cropping pattern. The highest gross return (Tk. 274800 ha-1 in 2014-15 and Tk. 276600 ha-1 in 2015-16), gross margin (Tk. 113950 ha-1 in 2014-15 and Tk. 106750 ha-1 in 2015-16) and BCR (1.70 in 2014-15 and 1.66 in 2015-16) were obtained from improved four crops based cropping pattern (Boro-T. Aus-T. Aman-Mustard). Two years results showed that four crops could be grown one after another in a sequence in the farmers field of Cumilla region for achieving higher system productivity and economic return.
