The Relationship

The relationship between class attendance and academic performance has been an important area of research, with a positive association being posited between the two. The setting for our study is an International Branch Campus (IBC) of a British university that needs to demonstrate the quality of its service delivery both to the parent institution and to the fee-paying students. We employ a dataset of over 900 students in an undergraduate degree programme and subject it to statistical techniques, namely quantile regression and two-stage quantile regression. Our results show that attendance has a beneficial influence on academic performance and this benefit persists at higher percentile of grades. We propose that IBCs could consider an attendance policy that encourages students to attend classes.

The Impact

This study explores the reasons for non-attendance and what motivates those who attend management accounting classes at undergraduate level of the accounting program and investigate the impact of attendance upon academic performance on the course. The subjects of the research were students in three undergraduate programs of Accountancy Faculty at UiTM Perlis namely Diploma in Accountancy, Diploma in Accounting and Information System and Bachelor of Accountancy who took the highest level of management accounting courses at their respective programs. The total number of students involved was 121 students. A short questionnaire and class attendance records were used for this survey. The highest mean score cited for the reasons students attending management accounting class was ‘to learn, to understand, and to increase their knowledge on the course’. Students’ preoccupation with assignments and study for other tests, and genuine health reasons were ranked highly for reasons non-attendance reasons. A clear positive relationship between attendance and academic performance was evident.

The association between academic performance, attendance to classes, intrinsic motivation and gender in 950 students of the engineering programs of the University of Cartagena between 2014 and 2016 was analyzed. The survey was used to evaluate the academic performance from the dimensions: conceptual, procedural and global. Class attendance and gender was assessed by teacher survey. The intrinsic motivation was evaluated through the CEVEAPEU questionnaire, which was designed and validated by Gargallo et. al (2009). For the relationship analysis, the variables were crossed and the bar diagrams and the 2x2 contingency tables were constructed applying the Chi-Square independence test. The values 0.89 (academic performance) and 0.90 (CEVEAPEU) for the Cronbach's Alpha, allowed to validate the instruments used. The results indicate that there is a significant degree of statistical significance (p <0.05) between academic performance and intrinsic motivation (p = 0.0003) at a confidence level of 95%. This means that the intrinsic motivation associated with enthusiasm, self-awareness, perseverance, mental agility and self-control have a relevant impact on the academic performance of the engineering student at the University of Cartagena. No statistical significance could be verified between the academic performance and the gender of the students. Nor between academic performance and class attendance of engineering students of the University of Cartagena at a 95% level of confidence.
