After the unexpected spread of the global pandemic, all the universities around the world have implemented online learning procedures. This necessity forced the mathematics and statistics instructors to use more technological means than ever. The method used in this chapter involves an intense use of applet-based education tools for a two-course sequence of introductory statistics. Forty-five applets were used during the courses. At the end of the semester for each course, a short questionnaire was given to the students to evaluate the method applied. The feedback from the students about the applet-based instruction was largely positive. Possible future works are suggested in the conclusion.

Abstract Introduction Extra-curricular activities form an important part of undergraduate education as they give students the opportunity to explore subjects of interest. There is significant demand within the undergraduate population for further teaching in neuro-related specialities. The aim of this online twelve-week course was to provide neuroanatomy teaching in greater breadth and detail than possible in the undergraduate curriculum. We sought to gauge motivations for involvement. Method Delegates (n = 166) from six UK universities were asked to complete a short questionnaire examining motivations and future career plans prior to the course beginning, only those who consented were involved further in the analysis (n = 98). Results Motivations for involvement were predominantly to develop a greater understanding of neuroanatomy (63.3%), to support career plans (13.3%) or to support preparation for an examination or competition (8.2%). The majority (56.1%) had no particular speciality in mind. For those who did, a range of specialities including neurosurgery (24.5%), neurology (8.2%) was given. Conclusions There is clear interest within the undergraduate population for more specialised extra-curricular activities in addition to conventional experiences such as conferences. Online courses run over multiple weeks provide further scope for depth and exploration of subjects in further detail. In this course, the majority of delegates did not have a particular speciality in mind, demonstrating neuroanatomy to be a popular subject regardless of potential career plans. For students looking to pursue a career in neuro-related specialities, courses are perceived as important opportunities to support future career development.

Introduction: Malaria in Croatia was endemic until 1954, when the last autochthonous cases were reported. Now we have imported cases and the disease still most commonly affects seafarers and workers temporarily employed in malaria endemic countries. The aim of this study was to investigate ineffective malaria chemoprophylaxis among Croatian seafarers. Materials and methods: This study used the data collected by questionnaires that followed every imported case of malaria in Croatia. In addition, a survey was conducted among the seafarers attending the Special education program at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Split, regarding their attitudes / reasons for not using chemoprophylaxis using a short questionnaire. Results: From the 1st January 2007 to 31st December 2019 there was a total of 108 imported malaria cases in Croatia, of which 22 (20.37%) referred to seafarers. In situations reporting the information whether the infected seafarers used chemoprophylaxis, twenty seafarers (91% of the overall infected) responded that they had not used chemoprophylaxis, while two of them (9.0%) responded that they had used it incorrectly. Conclusion: It appears that the main reason for avoiding chemoprophylaxis is the fear of side-effects. Some of the respondents, particularly the young ones, stated that they were not vaccinated – which is a proof of ignorance, as the vaccine does not exist. How to familiarise and motivate maritime students and seafarers to participate actively in protection against malaria – this is an issue that is important not only in Croatia but, presumably, in other countries as well.

Abstract Objective: The project aimed to validate a short questionnaire (CoCu pregnancy – Composition and Culture of Eating during pregnancy) and to investigate associations with age and socio-economic status (SES). Design: The questionnaire was developed according to the validated CoCu for children and adolescents containing a diet composition (fourteen items) and a culture of eating part (six items). A Nutritional Health Score (NHS) was calculated based on diet composition (–120 and +120, with higher scores indicating healthier diets). The validity was assessed by comparing answers in CoCu pregnancy with a FFQ. In a subsample (n 97), we assessed the percentage of having chosen the same (or adjacent) response categories in the 24th and 36th week of pregnancy (wp). Setting: Data were collected within the LIFE Child study in Leipzig, Germany. Participants: We evaluated 430 questionnaires of pregnant women (24th wp). Results: The results indicated a healthy diet in the present sample (NHS at 24th wp = 49·74 (95 % CI 47·27, 52·22)). The analyses revealed significant positive correlations between CoCu and FFQ (rho ranging from 0·32 to 0·61). For each food item, >90 % of women had chosen the same (50–60 %) or adjacent response categories in the 24th and 36th wp. The analysis revealed associations of the NHS with age (β = 0·11, P = 0·027), SES (β = 0·21, P < 0·001), snacking (β = –0·24, P < 0·001) and media use (β = –0·18, P < 0·001). Conclusions: The questionnaire represents a useful tool for surveying the diets during pregnancy for research and clinical practice.

Consumer virtual reality (VR) technologies have made embodying a virtual avatar during an immersive experience more feasible. The sense of embodiment toward that virtual avatar can be characterized and measured along three factors: self-location, agency, and body ownership. Some measures of embodiment have been previously proposed, but most have not been validated or do not measure the three individual factors of embodiment. In this paper, we present the construction and validation of a preliminary version of a short questionnaire that not only addresses these factors of embodiment but can also be used as an in-VR questionnaire, which we call the pESQ. By using and validating the pESQ, we provide results indicating that foot tracking significantly improves self-location and agency, and that an avatar significantly improves body ownership.
