Bisphenol A (BPA) is an emerging pollutant with endocrine disrupting properties that can be found at trace levels in various aqueous environments. Conventional water and wastewater treatments are not designed to efficiently remove these substances. Therefore, this work investigates the removal of BPA by an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP), specifically heterogeneous photocatalysis using TiO2. The influences of the TiO2 concentration (1.0–10.0 mg L-1), pH (5.3 and 8.5) and effects matrix composition were studied for the removal of BPA at a concentration of 0.8 mg L-1. The results indicated that BPA was completely removed after 45 min of treatment using 7.5 and 10 mg L-1 of TiO2, under constant aeration and artificial UV irradiation, at the different pH values. The use of solar radiation as an UV source was also effective, removing BPA after 60 min of irradiation at pH without adjustment, as well as at pH 8.5. Ecotoxicological evaluation indicated that the post-treatment samples did not present acute effects towards Daphnia similis. Evaluation of chronic toxicity with Raphidocelis subcapitata showed that there was a reduction in the negative effect of BPA under the growth rate of algae biomass after 60 min of treatment, compared to the initial sample.

The overall aim of this work was to examine the degradation of trimethoprim (TMP), which is an antibacterial agent, during the application of two advanced oxidation process (AOP) systems in secondary treated domestic effluents. The homogeneous solar Fenton process (hv/Fe2+/H2O2) and heterogeneous photocatalysis with titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions were tested. It was found that the degradation of TMP depends on several parameters such as the amount of iron salt and H2O2, concentration of TiO2, pH of solution, solar irradiation, temperature and initial substrate concentration. The optimum dosages of Fe2+ and H2O2 for homogeneous ([Fe2+] = 5 mg L−1, [H2O2] = 3.062 mmol L−1) and TiO2 ([TiO2] = 3 g L−1) for heterogeneous photocatalysis were established. The study indicated that the degradation of TMP during the solar Fenton process is described by a pseudo-first-order reaction and the substrate degradation during the heterogeneous photocatalysis by the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetics. The toxicity of the treated samples was evaluated using a Daphnia magna bioassay and was finally decreased by both processes. The results indicated that solar Fenton is more effective than the solar TiO2 process, yielding complete degradation of the examined substrate within 30 min of illumination and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) reduction of about 44% whereas the respective values for the TiO2 process were ∼70% degradation of TMP within 120 min of treatment and 13% DOC removal.

Abstract The mutual influence of the dominant macroalgae species inhabiting the intertidal zone of the Murman Coast was studied. Particularly, the proposed negative effect of Palmaria palmata on the growth of Fucus algae was tested. The interspecific interactions of the Fucus vesiculosus, F. distichus, F. serratus, and P. palmata were studied experimentally. The species were cultivated pairwise in the laboratory. A field experiment with species removal was performed in the intertidal zone of the Zelenetskaya Bay, the Barents Sea. The growth rate, algae biomass, and the content of chlorophyll pigments was measured. Fucus species affected positively the growth of P. palmata. No effect of the other species on F. vesiculosus was recorded under the experimental conditions. Palmaria palmata affected negatively the growth of F. serratus; its presence led to an increase in the pigment content in F. serratus and F. distichus.

The main goal of this study was to examine the influence of natural organic matter (NOM) on the efficiency of H2O2/UV advanced oxidation process (AOP) as a preventive treatment for biofilm control. Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 biofilm-forming bacteria were suspended in water and exposed to various AOP conditions with different NOM concentrations, and compared to natural waters. H2O2/UV prevented biofilm formation: (a) up to 24 h post treatment – when residual H2O2 was neutralized; (b) completely (days) – when residual H2O2 was maintained. At high NOM concentrations (i.e. 25 mg/L NOM or 12.5 mg/L DOC) an additive biofilm control effect was observed for the combined H2O2/UV system compared to UV irradiation alone, after short biofilm incubation times (<24 h). This effect was H2O2 concentration dependent and can be explained by the high organic content of these water samples, whereby an increase in NOM could enhance •OH production and promote the formation of additional reactive oxygen species. In addition, maintaining an appropriate ratio of bacterial surviving conc.: residual H2O2conc. post-treatment could prevent bacterial regrowth and biofilm formation.

A duplex grey-scale and colour-Doppler ultrasound instrument was used to study the changes in the wall of the preovulatory follicle in mares. When the follicle reached ≥35 mm (hour 0), mares were randomized into control (n= 16) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-treated (n= 16) groups. The hCG treatment was given at hour 0. Scanning was done every 12 h until hour 36, every hour between hours 36 and 48, and every 12 h thereafter until ovulation. Blood was sampled every 12 h for oestradiol assay. During the period 0–24 h post-treatment, oestradiol concentrations decreased in the hCG group and increased in the controls (significant interaction). During the period 0–36 h post-treatment, thickness and echogenicity of the granulosa increased in the hCG group but not in the controls. During the period 36 to 12 h before ovulation, granulosa and colour-Doppler end-points increased in the control and hCG groups (hour effects), while oestradiol was decreasing in both groups. The prominence and percentage of follicle circumference with an anechoic band peripheral to the granulosa and colour-Doppler signals in the follicle wall, indicating arterial blood flow, decreased during the period 4 to 1 h before ovulation (hour effects). Results indicated that the ultrasonographic changes of the wall of the preovulatory follicle were not associated temporally with changes in oestradiol concentrations and prominence of an anechoic band, and colour-Doppler signals decreased during the few hours before ovulation. The hypothesis that the latter portion of the ovulatory LH surge has a negative effect on systemic oestradiol was supported by the immediate decrease in oestradiol concentrations when hCG was injected.
