Design of bridges that catalyze city development

<p>In the process of evolution of cities through time, recovering former industrial or railway related areas about to be absorbed (or already absorbed) by the expanding urban fabric for public use is a natural step in the growth of populated areas and a recurrent design problem for engineers and architects.</p><p>The development of these areas almost always requires the design and construction of new infrastructures that improve accessibility, frequently including new bridges. These bridges will generally have the responsibility of being the first designed piece of ambitious and highly expected transformation projects. For this reason, they need be appropriate in two very different scenarios: the long temporary situation (sometimes decades) when they are the only object in the area that meets the design standards of the future development, and the final scenario when bridge and new city should perform as a whole. Successfully responding to the two different contexts and the variable constraints is an exciting challenge for the bridge designers.</p><p>This article explores the keys to be considered when designing bridges that allow and catalyze city growth, using three examples of the author’s previous experience.</p>

AbstractResources and the environment have always been the two important natural factors that affect people’s lives. In recent years, the problem of resources and the environment has increasingly become an important issue that people are concerned about. This study discusses the use and consumption of energy and the impact of environmental pollution on economic development under sustainable economic development. This paper takes Panzhihua as an example to analyze the impact of energy and environment on the economy, and proposes solutions to improve economic development, which is of strategic significance for the future development of Panzhihua City. In this paper, the system dynamics method is used to decompose the Panzhihua large-scale system into three parts and carry out modeling and simulation to explore the connection between them. Based on the data from 2007 to 2015 in Panzhihua City, simulations have been carried out to obtain qualitative and quantitative analysis of certain simulation curves of the energy-environment-economy 3E system (hereinafter referred to as 3E system) from 2007 to 2030 to ascertain the future development pattern of Panzhihua City. The results show that when the 3E system is a coordinated development model, economic development and environmental protection have a good development trend at the same time, which is applicable to the future development of Panzhihua City. This model has good reference suggestions and application prospects for urban development. We want to give Panzhihua City the following suggestions: (1) Continue to focus on the secondary industry and increase competitiveness. (2) Increase the investment funds in environmental protection and achieve sustainable economic development.

New city development, with a gated community approach by private property developers in the Tangerang Regency area, has potentially reducing the quality of local informal settlements to slums. Construction o concrete walls that separate formal and informal housing or between the rich and the poor produces an unequal gap and the absence of shared space. Mekarwangi Village is one of the affected villages. Avoiding negative impacts in the future, it needs good and sustainable planning, which is based on the study of local potential that can be integrated into formal housing with an analysis of spirit of place. The case study of this activity is located in Cilegong Kampong in Mekarwangi Village. What is the local potential of Kampung Cilegong? To get a depht analysis, this study uses qualitative methods. The purpose of this study is to find the local potential of Mekarwangi Village that can be developed in the future. The final result shows, that Cilegong Kampong in Mekarwangi Village has the potential as a Green Tourism Village.

The article examines the state of the Holocaust historiography in Ukraine for the period of 2010 – beginning of 2014. The review analyzes activities of major research and educational organizations in Ukraine which have significant part of projects devoted to the Holocaust; main publications and discussions on the Holocaust in Ukraine, including publications of Ukrainian authors in academic European and American journals. The article illustrates contemporary tendencies and conditions of the Holocaust Studies in Ukraine, defines major problems and shows perspectives of the future development of the Holocaust historiography in Ukraine.

This paper,first presented on 21 October 1995 at ajoint seminar ofthe Scottish Law Commission and the Faculty of Law, University of Edinburgh, on the subject of breach of contract, considers the future development of the law in this area, first by considering its history and current state in comparative terms and drawing the conclusion that it is characterised by a mixture of Civilian and Common Law elements; second, by comparing Scots law with the provisions on breach contained in recently published proposals for a harmonised law of contract (the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts, the Principles of European Contract Law prepared by the Lando Commission, and the draft “code”for the United Kingdom prepared on behalf of the English Law Commission by Harvey McGregor in the late 1960s) and in international conventions on the sale of goods. Although Scots law emerges reasonably wellfrom this exercise, there are a number of points to be taken on board in any future reform, as well as some insights into important underlying principles.

A practical and concise total synthesis of tricyclic ketone 7 (CDE ring), a valuable intermediate for the synthesis of racemic camptothecin and analogs, was described (8 chemical steps and 29% overall yield). The synthesis starts with two inexpensive, readily available materials and is operationally simple to perform. It is worth mentioning that the reported protecting group-free synthesis, with advantages of a short route, would be helpful for the future development of industry-scale syntheses of camptothecin-family alkaloids.

Environmental problems such as air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are especially challenging in urban areas. Electric mobility in different forms may be a solution. While in recent years a major focus was put on private electric vehicles, e-mobility in public transport is already a very well-established and mature technology with a long history. The core objective of this paper is to analyze the economics of e-mobility in the Austrian capital of Vienna and the corresponding impact on the environment. In this paper, the historical developments, policy framework and scenarios for the future development of mobility in Vienna up to 2030 are presented. A major result shows that in an ambitious scenario for the deployment of battery electric vehicles, the total energy demand in road transport can be reduced by about 60% in 2030 compared to 2018. The major conclusion is that the policies, especially subsidies and emission-free zones will have the largest impact on the future development of private and public e-mobility in Vienna. Regarding the environmental performance, the most important is to ensure that a very high share of electricity used for electric mobility is generated from renewable energy sources.
