The results of the development of an experimental plant-microbial fuel cell (PMFC) construction are presented. It is based on cultivation by the panoponics method and aimed at the joint production of electricity and plant products. The value of bioelectric potentials (BEP) is ~ 100 mV when it is generated in a multi-day mode using a vegetable culture of lettuce. The importance of providing surface electrical contact of roots with electrodes is shown. It is noted that both redox reactions in the nutrient solution and the root system of plants can act as an electromotive force (EMF). It is shown that creating a battery based on the constructed PMFCs, leading to the summation of electrical parameters for a long period (more than 3 days), is possible only in the case of uniformity of the elements included in the electric circuit.

Plant microbial fuel cell (P-MFC) is an electrochemical reactor that converts organic compounds to electrical energy through the catalytic reaction from electrochemically active bacteria (EAB). However, there is no sign of an attempt in developing the functional model in predicting the energy conversion and utilization of P-MFC. In this study, an analytic model is proposed to show the whole production process of the organic compound to electrical energy generation. <em>Pandanus Amaryllifolius</em> plant was used as sources of photosynthate, where biomass product from rhizodeposition, acetate was produced, and soil bacteria as the microbial culture, and air as the input to the cathode chamber. The proposed analytical model is able to predict the output of the P-MFC using the parameters from the experiment. The generated data from the model was then compared with the monitored data from the <em>Pandanus Amaryllifolius </em>P-MFC. The results show the electrical power output has a high similarity pattern with the bacterial growth curve model and able to achieve the coulombic efficiency of 95.32%.

A Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (Plant-MFCs) has been studied both in the lab and in a field. So far, field studies were limited to a more conventional Plant-MFC design, which submerges the anode in the soil and places the cathode above the soil surface. However, for a large scale application a tubular Plant-MFC is considered more practical since it needs no topsoil excavation. In this study, 1 m length tubular design Plant-MFC was installed in triplicate in a paddy field located in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The Plant-MFC reactors were operated for four growing seasons. The rice paddy was grown in a standard cultivation process without any additional treatment due to the reactor instalation. An online data acquisition using LoRa technology was developed to investigate the performance of the tubular Plant-MFC over the final whole rice paddy growing season. Overall, the four crop seasons, the Plant-MFC installation did not show a complete detrimental negative effect on rice paddy growth. Based on continuous data analysis during the fourth crop season, a continuous electricity generation was achieved during a wet period in the crop season. Electricity generation dynamics were observed before, during and after the wet periods that were explained by paddy field management. A maximum daily average density from the triplicate Plant-MFCs reached 9.6 mW/m2 plant growth area. In one crop season, 9.5–15 Wh/m2 electricity can be continuously generated at an average of 0.4 ± 0.1 mW per meter tube. The Plant-MFC also shows a potential to be used as a bio sensor, e.g., rain event indicator, during a dry period between the crop seasons.
