In this paper, we present the progress we have made in verifying the benchmark powertrain control systems introduced in the last ARCH workshop. We implemented the algorithm for computing local discrepancy (rate of convergence or divergence of trajectories) reported in the hybrid system verification tool C2E2. We created Stateflow translations of the original models to aid the processing using C2E2 tool. We also had to encode the different driver behaviors in the form of state machines. With these customizations, we have been successful in verifying one of the easier (but still challenging) benchmarks from the powertrain suite. In this paper, we present some of the engineering challenges and describe the artifacts we created in the process.

The complexity of designing concurrent and highly-evolving interactive systems has grown to a point where system verification has become a hurdle. Fortunately, formal verification methods have arrived at the right time. They detect errors, inconsistencies and incompleteness at early development stages of a system formally modeled using a formal specification language. -calculus (Milner, 1999) is one such formal language which provides strong mathematical base that can be used for verifying system specifications. But manually verifying the specifications of concurrent systems is a very tedious and error-prone work, especially if the specifications are large. Consequently, an automated verification tool would be essential for efficient system design and development. In addition, formal verification tools are vital ingredient to fully harness the potential of component-based software composition. The authors developed such an automated verification tool which is highly portable and seamlessly integrates with the visualization, reduction and performance evaluation tools introduced (Ahmad & Rahimi, 2008; Rahimi, 2006; Rahimi et al., 2001, 2008) to provide a comprehensive tool for designing and analyzing multi process/agent systems. Open-Bisimulation (Sangiorgi, 1996) concept is utilized as the theoretical base for the design and implementation of the tool which incorporates an expert system implemented in Java Expert System Shell (JESS) (Friedman-Hill, 2003).

The bulk of the electricity generated within the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) is produced from units with a capacity of 500 MW and above. A further 10.2 GW of generation is due to be commissioned in the next few years. Hence those 500 MW units with the highest generating costs now need to develop a flexible operating capability. An attempt is made to define the effect on plant performance of improving the plant automatic controls systems and enhancing the amount and presentation of information to operating staff. The consequences on plant performance of providing minute to minute regulation against grid frequency are given. The economic consequences of running at off design conditions are evaluated and related to the benefits of modernizing the control and display systems on the 500 MW units. Examples are given of the improvements being made in instrumentation and data handling systems.

Over the past seventy years many advances have been made in the field of ship control. Early developments by Sperry and Minorsky on proportional controllers have led to today's modern control systems which have interfacing capabilities with position fixing equipment.This paper presents a brief historical summary of the methods employed in ship control from early proportional devices through the range of adaptive systems and concludes with details of a possible future control method known as intelligent control.Intelligent control consists of three methodologies: expert, fuzzy and neural. An investigation and comparison of the methodologies will present possible future control strategies.

Abstract In database theory, the term database transformation was used to refer to a unifying treatment for computable queries and updates. Recently, it was shown that non-deterministic database transformations can be captured exactly by a variant of ASMs, the so-called Database Abstract State Machines (DB-ASMs). In this article we present a logic for DB-ASMs, extending the logic of Nanchen and Stärk for ASMs. In particular, we develop a rigorous proof system for the logic for DB-ASMs, which is proven to be sound and complete. The most difficult challenge to be handled by the extension is a proper formalization capturing non-determinism of database transformations and all its related features such as consistency, update sets or multisets associated with DB-ASM rules. As the database part of a state of database transformations is a finite structure and DB-ASMs are restricted by allowing quantifiers only over the database part of a state, we resolve this problem by taking update sets explicitly into the logic, i.e. by using an additional modal operator $[X]$, where $X$ is interpreted as an update set $\Delta$ generated by a DB-ASM rule. The DB-ASM logic provides a powerful verification tool to study properties of database transformations.

Purpose Shop floor control systems are generally major points of discussion in production planning and control literature. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how lean production control principles can be used in a make-to-order (MTO) job shop, where the volume is typically low and there is high variety. This paper examines the procedures involved in implementing a constant work-in-process (CONWIP)/Kanban hybrid system in the shop floor environment and also provides insights and guidelines on the implementation of a hybrid system in a high-variety/low-volume environment. Design/methodology/approach The authors review literature on Kanban, CONWIP, and CONWIP/Kanban hybrid systems to analyze how lean production control principles can be used in a MTO job shop. The second part focuses on the process of implementation. Using a case study of a manufacturer of electromechanical components for valve monitoring and controls, the paper describes how the operation is transformed by for more efficient shop floor control systems. Real experiments are used to compare pre- and post-improvement performance. Findings The study shows that the proposed hybrid Kanban-CONWIP system reduced the cycle time and achieved an increase of 38 percent in inventory turnover. The empirical results from this pilot study provide useful managerial insights for a benchmarking analysis of the actions to be taken into consideration by companies that have similar manufacturing systems. Research limitations/implications The statistic generalization of the results is impossible due to the use of a single case method of study. Originality/value This paper provides insights and guidelines on the implementation of a hybrid system in a high-variety/low-volume environment. The literature on real applications of hybrid CONWIP/Kanban by case study is limited.

The modeling method and control strategy for series hybrid electric vehicles were presented in this paper. Firstly, the system structure and operation principles are discussed systematically; and then a control strategy is proposed based on the modeling of powertrain. Control strategy focus on the multi-modes switch logic and power distribution. In the last part of this paper, the simulation made in MATLAB/Simulink was introduced, which results indicate that the model and control strategy are correct.
