Becoming an Anti-Racist Intuitions: The Challenges Facing Higher Education

The May 2020 killing of George Floyd and the public’s outcry has sparked a response from many higher education institutions to publish anti-racist statements. On the surface, these statements may seem genuine, but the bureaucratic governance structure of higher education may impede any change efforts. This paper discusses the challenges facing higher education in creating an institution free of racist policies and ideologies. This includes analyzing practices, policies, and values that are not consistent with creating an inclusive educational culture. Equally important is the need to understand the best approach to engage in a productive and honest intellectual dialogue to facilitate change. The article concludes by examining the governance structure and ideas on how higher education can move toward sustainable, meaningful change.

Governance covers a comprehensive analysis of how higher education is governed. Governance comprises a complex set of aspects such as the legal framework, the features of the institutions, the form of relationship with the whole system, the funding model, as they are being held accountable on how money is spent and the less formal structures and relationships that affect behavior.The radical changes in the university environment, has imposed changes within the higher education institutions (HEIs). The massification of education and the reduction of the company's willingness to fund the decrease in government funding and increasing institutional autonomy have forced universities to adopt new forms of manageme In Portugal, the Legal Regime of Higher Education Institutions (RJIES) sought to promote meaningful change and a paradigm shift in the governance of these institutions in Portugal. The main objective of this article is to understand the consequences that the new regulations had in the governance of HEI and in the adaptation of processes, in a context of reduction of higher education funding.

Abstract The management of higher education institutions has changed considerably over the last few decades. Most analyses in Europe usually focus on how the autonomy of institutions evolved, how the governance structure developed, and what kind of management roles and techniques appeared. Less attention has been paid to the change of formal organizational structure which, according to the contingency theory, has a significant impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of organizations. There is even less research on these issues in Central and Eastern European higher education. In this paper, the evolution of the organizational structure of Hungarian institutions is analyzed from a contingency theory perspective. The relationship between environmental factors (such as size, complexity, and stability of environment) and organizational responses (e.g., centralization and decentralization) is examined.

The paper considers some results of the research of the governance structure at Russian higher education institutions. The study covers admission policy as well as educational, scientific, investment and other policies. The level of participation of inter-university agents in different activities is also discussed. The analysis of opinion polls shows that governance at Russian universities is mainly hierarchic, most decisions are taken by the university’s administration while the opinion of the faculty is of very low significance. This model is notably different from that of European university where governance is more collective.

Purpose The purpose of this article was to extend the concepts of systems of oppression in higher education to the clinical setting where communication and swallowing services are delivered to geriatric persons, and to begin a conversation as to how clinicians can disrupt oppression in their workplace. Conclusions As clinical service providers to geriatric persons, it is imperative to understand systems of oppression to affect meaningful change. As trained speech-language pathologists and audiologists, we hold power and privilege in the medical institutions in which we work and are therefore obligated to do the hard work. Suggestions offered in this article are only the start of this important work.

Choice of profession is a social phenomenon that every person has to face in life. Numerous studies convince us that not only the well-being of a person depends on the chosen work, but also his attitude to himself and life in general, therefore, the right and timely professional choice is very important. Research about factors of career self-determination of students of higher education institutions in Ukraine shows that self-determination is an important factor in the socialization of young person, and the factors that determine students' career choices become an actual problem of nowadays. The present study involved full-time and part-time students of Institute of Philology and Mass Communications of Open International University of Human Development "Ukraine" in order to examine the factors of career self-determination of students of higher education institutions (N=189). Diagnostic factors of career self-determination of students studying in the third and fourth year were carried out using the author's questionnaire. Processing of obtained data was carried out using the Excel 2010 program; factorial and comparative analysis were applied. Results of the study showed that initial stage of career self-determination falls down on the third and fourth studying year at the university, when an image of future career and career orientations begin to form. At the same time, the content of career self-determination in this period is contradictory and uncertain, therefore, the implementation of pedagogical support of this process among students is effective.

This study aims to analyze the effect of reputation, competence on customer loyalty with customer satisfaction as an intervening variable. The population in this study were students of private tertiary institutions in Central Java who are members of Services for Higher Education Institutions Region VI, while a sample of 5 private universities, using the purposive sampling method, was taken with the Slovin formula of 190 respondents. The analysis technique uses regression analysis. Research results show the customer satisfaction variable can be an intervening variable or able to mediate between the direct influence of the reputation variable and the competency variable on customer loyalty variables.
