Integrated stratigraphy from a transgressive upper Oligocene section in NW Italy

ABSTRACT: The Oligo-Miocene Transition (OMT) is one of the most important climatic transitions of the last 30 million years. This short period of climate warming coincides with a few biotic turnovers, which are well known in deeper marine settings where stratigraphic successions yield a detailed record; in shallowmarine environments they have been proved difficult to recognize as the occurrence and absence of certain taxa due to ecological preferences hamper the study. This study focuses on the Case Cné section in the late Oligocene of the Tertiary Piedmont Basin (TPB) as it represents a gradual transgressive event, which shows the drowning of a locally developed reef complex and development of a deeper marine sedimentary setting influenced by gravity flow mechanics. Larger foraminifera biostratigraphy was used to date the section to the late Oligocene (SBZ23); preliminary strontium isotope data confirms this result. Using sedimentological, semi-quantitative microfacies and geochemical analysis the sedimentary history of the section was reconstructed and divided into four major phases: the drowning of the reef complex, a short prograding phase of the fluvial system, the onset of gravity flow mechanics and a final transgressive phase with an initial turbiditic influence which continues regionally into the Miocene.

OMT follows the Late Oligocene Warming Event which marks the last warming pulse of a generally cool interval and represents a time frame that could potentially fit well with modern climate change predictions.</p><p>The Case Cné section located within the Tertiary Piedmont Basin (TPB) represents a gradual transgressive event, which shows the drowning of a locally developed reef complex and a development of a deeper marine sedimentary setting influenced by gravity flow mechanics. Larger foraminifera association indicate a late Oligocene (SBZ23) time and this seems confirmed by Sr isotopes data.</p><p>By usage of sedimentological, semi-quantitative microfacies and geochemical analysis the sedimentary history of the section could be reconstructed and divided into four major phases. 1) The growth and establishment of the reef directly on the metamorphic substrate, 2) its development over the basement and the construction of a modest reefal body, 3) the slow drowning of the reef complex due to enhanced prograding fluvial activity and finally 4) the onset of gravity flows passing to turbiditic influence which cap the transgression and that continue regionally throughout into the Miocene. </p><p>The benthic fauna seems to register the warming period by change in biodiversity and abundance. Below the warming event, larger foraminfera are rather sparse over the section and the benthic community seems dominated by suspension feeders. Toward the top of the section, where the LOWE seems to occur, the gravity flows transport a very large amount of operculinid foraminifera that are well adapted to warm and eutrophic conditions as the ones that possibly characterized the LOWE time span in this tectonically active region.</p>

In a very short period of time, “COVID-19” has seized the consciousness globally by making remarkable changes in our day to day living and has superintended as a public health emergency globally. It has high radar of transmission, affecting an individual at work to frontline workers. The measures and planning for a response plays a key role from drawing up an emergency committee and this follows an equation which broadly deals with epidemiological to clinical history of the patient, management steps from isolation, screening, diagnostic assays for identification and treatment. The application of an organized plan with secure structure aids in better performance, increases efficacy of management and saves time. Also saves time for a health care worker to g through routine levels of channels of administration if already a familiar way of operation is known for such situations. Thus, planning and developing a ‘blueprint of approach’ towards management of patient while facing such situation is a must. This review provides an insight to the measures for detection, response and preparedness of the hospital and health care workers should largely be inclusive of; also highlights the measures to be taken at every step after coming in contact with a positive case of “COVID-19”.

This article is devoted to the development of science and culture in the short period of the Wrangel Crimea - 1920. At this time, the brightest figures of Russian culture of that time worked on the territory of the small Peninsula: O. E. Mandelstam, M. A. Voloshin, B.D. Grekov, G.V. Vernadsky, V.I. Vernadsky and others. The article provides an overview of the life and activities of the Russian intelligentsia in 1920 in the Crimea, based on materials of periodicals as the most important source for studying the history of the Civil war in the South of Russia whose value is to be fully evaluated.

The Cenozoic Malaguide Basin from Sierra Espuña (Internal Betic Zone, S Spain) due to the quality of outcropping, areal representation, and continuity in the sedimentation can be considered a key-basin. In the last 30 years, a large number of studies with very different methodological approaches have been done in the area. Models indicate an evolution from passive margin to wedge-top basin from Late Cretaceous to Early Miocene. Sedimentation changes from limestone platforms with scarce terrigenous inputs, during the Paleocene to Early Oligocene, to the deep basin with huge supplies of turbidite sandstones and conglomerates during the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene. The area now appears structured as an antiformal stack with evidence of synsedimentary tectonics. The Cenozoic tectono-sedimentary basin evolution is related to three phases: (1) flexural tectonics during most of the Paleogene times to create the basin; (2) fault and fold compartmentation of the basin with the creation of structural highs and subsiding areas related to blind-fault-propagation folds, deforming the basin from south to north during Late Oligocene to Early Aquitanian times; (3) thin-skin thrusting tectonics when the basin began to be eroded during the Late Aquitanian-Burdigalian. In recent times some works on the geological heritage of the area have been performed trying to diffuse different geological aspects of the sector to the general public. A review of the studies performed and the revisiting of the area allow proposing different key-outcrops to follow the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Cenozoic basin from this area. Eight sites of geological interest have been selected (Cretaceous-Cenozoic boundary, Paleocene Mula Fm, Lower Eocene Espuña-Valdelaparra Fms, Middle Eocene Malvariche-Cánovas Fms, Lowermost Oligocene As Fm, Upper Oligocene-Lower Aquitanian Bosque Fm, Upper Oligocene-Aquitanian Río Pliego Fm, Burdigalian El Niño Fm) and an evaluation has been performed to obtain four parameters: the scientific value, the educational and touristic potential, and the degradation risk. The firsts three parameters obtained values above 50 being considered of “high” or “very high” interest (“very high” in most of the cases). The last parameter shows always values below 50 indicating a “moderate” or “low” risk of degradation. The obtained values allow us considering the tectono-sedimentary evolution of this basin worthy of being proposed as a geological heritage.

This case report illustrates the treatment outcomes of a collegiate athlete presenting with an 18-month history of post-concussion syndrome who received a series of mixed manual therapies in isolation of other therapy. Persistent symptoms were self-reported as debilitating, contributing to self-removal from participation in school, work, and leisure activities. Patient and parent interviews captured the history of multiple concussions and other sports-related injuries. Neurological screening and activities of daily living were baseline measured. Post-Concussion Symptom Checklist and Headache Impact Test-6™ were utilized to track symptom severity. Treatments applied included craniosacral therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, and glymphatic techniques. Eleven treatment sessions were administered over 3 months. Results indicated restoration of oxygen saturation, normalized pupil reactivity, and satisfactory sleep. Post-concussion syndrome symptom severity was reduced by 87% as reflected by accumulative Post-Concussion Symptom Checklist scores. Relief from chronic headaches was achieved, reflected by Headache Impact Test-6 scores. Restoration of mood and quality of life were reported. A 6-month follow-up revealed symptoms remained abated with full re-engagement of daily activities. The author hypothesized that post-concussion syndrome symptoms were related to compression of craniosacral system structures and lymphatic fluid stagnation that contributed to head pressure pain, severe sleep deprivation, and multiple neurological and psychological symptoms. Positive outcomes over a relatively short period of time without adverse effects suggest these therapies may offer viable options for the treatment of post-concussion syndrome.

AbstractThe dynamical interrelation between resonant trans-Neptunian objects and short-period comets is studied. Initial orbits of resonant objects are based on computations in the model of the outward transport of objects during Neptune's migration in the early history of the outer Solar system. The dynamical evolution of this population is investigated for 4.5 Gyr, using a symplectic integrator. Our calculations show that resonant trans-Neptunian objects give a substantial contribution to the planetary region. We have estimated that the relative fraction of objects captured per year from the 2/3 resonance to Jupiter-family orbits with perihelion distances q<2.5 AU is 0.4×10−10 near the present epoch.

Advanced atherosclerosis or thrombosis of iliac vessels can constitute an absolute contraindication for heterotopic kidney transplantation. We report the case of a 42-year-old women with end-stage renal disease due to lupus nephritis and a history of bilateral thrombosis of iliac arteries caused by antiphospholipid antibodies. Occlusion had been treated by the bilateral placement of wall stents which precluded vascular anastomosis. The patient was transplanted with a right kidney procured by laparoscopic nephrectomy from her HLA semi-identical sister. The recipient had left nephrectomy after laparoscopical transperitoneal dissection. The donor kidney was orthotopically transplanted with end-to-end anastomosis of graft vessels to native renal vessels and of the graft and native ureter. Although, the patient received full anticoagulation because of a cardiac valve and antiphospholipid antibodies, she had no postoperative complication in spite of a short period of delayed graft function. Serum creatinine levels three months after transplantation were at 1.0 mg/dl. Our case documents that orthotopical transplantation of laparoscopically procured living donor kidneys at the site of recipient nephrectomy is a feasible procedure in patients with surgical contraindication of standard heterotopic kidney transplantation.

Based on the analysis of the previously unused archival sources and research works on the history of Russian cooperation, the main areas of the activities of the Akmola District Union of Cooperatives in 1917–1922 are studied and generalized. In terms of methodology, the study is based on the works of ideologists of Russian cooperation (M.I. Tugan-Baranovsky, V.F. Totomianets, A.V. Chayanov, and others) and the original concepts they developed. The article analyzes the activities of the Union of Cooperatives of a particular micro-region: the number of employees, organizational structure and management, organization of industrial production, financial and social policies, cultural and educational activities. The author substantiates the role of the District Union of Cooperatives in the development of economic relations in the region and in the district peasant farms’ entry into the all-Russian market. Despite the difficult political circumstances and the relatively short period of existence (from August 1917 to the end of 1922), the Akmola District Union of Cooperatives became an economic and organizational center, contributed to the establishment and development of the consumer cooperation system not only in the district, but also in the region: it initiated the establishment of the regional Union of Steppe Cooperatives. In the conditions of the territorial remoteness from industrial centers and the underdeveloped transport infrastructure, the District Union of Cooperatives significantly facilitated and promoted the production activities of the peasants of the region connecting them with the market, expedited the involvement of Kazakh farms in the regional economy. The Union carried out an active social policy and diversified cultural and educational work, allocated significant amounts from its profits to the development of education in the district. According to the author, the activities of the Akmola District Union of Cooperatives can be considered as an integral part of the national cooperative movement, and its success was due to the application of the allRussian experience during the heyday of cooperation in the country.

This study shows how the use of current geological investigative techniques, such as sequence stratigraphy and modern seismic interpretation methods, can potentially discover additional hydrocarbons in old fields that were previously considered depleted. Specifically, we examine the White Castle Field in South Louisiana, which has produced over 84.1 million barrels of oil and 63.1 billion cubic feet of gas but retains additional recoverable hydrocarbons. The field has pay sections ranging from late Oligocene to late Miocene. The upper Oligocene to early Miocene package, which was underexploited and understudied during the previous exploitation phase, contains three primary reservoirs (Cib Haz, MW, and MR). During most of the late Oligocene, the White Castle Salt Dome was located in a minibasin on the continental slope. The Cib Haz and MW reservoirs were deposited in this minibasin and offer great exploitation potential. The Cib Haz interval is an amalgamation of slumped shelfal limestones, sandstones, and shales interpreted to represent a lowstand systems tract (LST). The MW comprises a shelf-edge delta deposit that is also interpreted as part of a LST. The MR reservoir is interpreted as an incised valley fill located in the continental shelf that was deposited during a lowstand of sea level after the minibasin was filled. Finally, it appears that the minibasin acted as a self-contained hydrocarbon system during the late Oligocene, suggesting the possibility of a shale play. In this study, several new areas of interest are revealed that could contain economical amounts of hydrocarbons.

The following article deals with the image of Montenegro, a little country from the south-east European periphery, as perceived by a member of the nineteenth century British political elite. The history of this petty entity, less populated than an average English city, became especially important on the eve of the Holly Places Crises (of Palestine, 1853). A single dispute over the Montenegro-Ottoman border threatened to turn into European war, just a year before the Crimean War commenced. In regard the Montenegrin question, the always sensitive European "balance of power" was upset with the appearance of the unexpected alliance between Russia and Austria. The unique interest of the British Empire then started, for a short period of time, to be tied in with this almost unknown principality. The attitude of British diplomacy to Montenegro, image of the principality reconstructed in the Colonel Hugh Rose's report and its sources, could contribute not only to the advance the history of British foreign relations, but also to the development of the history of Montenegro.
