This exploratory study aims at understanding the social aspects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution by suggesting how the interface involving technological innovation and social innovation can resolve societal and socioeconomic problems with stress on sustainable development. The authors view social innovation and social enterprise as new amalgam for solving social problems in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. By applying theoretical analysis of the existing literature about the correlation between the Fourth Industrial Revolution and social innovation and social enterprise, they aim to describe the opportunities, forms, and the challenges unfolding in this new age. UK and China case studies will provide the empirical evidences that could support social innovators and social enterprises understand the implications in fields of application of the Fourth Industrial Revolution plus the interplay between them.

The study discusses the elements of technological innovation present in Law 8.666/1993 that can be considered promoters of sustainable development through public procurement. The research aims to identify elements related to “technological innovation” present in Law 8.666/1993, a public administration bidding law in Brazil, in comparison with its elements of “sustainability”, which can be considered propellants of sustainable development. Based on the contribution of the bibliographic references that deal with sustainability and technological innovations, it analyzes the importance of technology in bidding as a promoter of sustainable development. It is an exploratory study; the research is bibliographic, and the method of analysis is documentary, with content analysis. The results show an elevated index of elements regarding “technological innovations” present in the text of the current legal basis, when compared to the number of elements on “sustainable development” present in the same legislation. This study proposes the consideration of technological innovation as a dimension of sustainable development, driven by Law 8.666/1993, in view of the high content of referents to technological innovation present in its text.

The aim of this research is to analyze a theoretical method for measuring the business risk of investments in innovation proposed by Basso and Kimura (2010). The bases of the conceptual model relate the risk of investments in innovation at the firm level to the risk of the sector. In an analogous way, this study measures the sectorial risk of the different Brazilian industries with the added risk of investments in innovation, and then shows the risks of the companies listed on B3 (the São Paulo Stock Exchange) that exhibited all the necessary information for the model. This is an exploratory study with a quantitative approach, based on descriptive statistical methods and the proposed empirical model. The materials that support the research were taken from the five available editions of the Technological Innovation Survey – PINTEC (2000, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2011) and from the standardized financial statements of the selected companies. The results of the research confirmed the possibility of using the proposed methodology, with the use of weighted factors that – in this study – were guided by the Brazil Innovation Index. Thus, it was possible to measure the level of risk of each sector of Brazilian industry and of 85 companies.

How managers take decisions with respect to the acquisition and deployment of technology to promote technological innovation is central to the field of strategic management. The main objective of this research is to explore how technology decisions drive technological innovation in organizations. Technology decisions have been explored through the lens of substance and enactment of technology strategy. The paper reports findings from three Indian Power Distribution Firms that have taken various initiatives to turn around the dilapidated power distribution situation in the country. The study in addition to proposing typologies of technology acquisition and deployment strategies on the basis of patterns discovered also puts forth propositions linking technological innovation to the typologies. A modified model linking the technological innovation process to the substance and enactment of technology strategy has also been proposed.

Purpose This exploratory study examined the language skills and the type and frequency of disfluencies in the spoken narrative production of Spanish–English bilingual children who do not stutter. Method A cross-sectional sample of 29 bilingual students (16 boys and 13 girls) enrolled in grades prekindergarten through Grade 4 produced a total of 58 narrative retell language samples in English and Spanish. Key outcome measures in each language included the percentage of normal (%ND) and stuttering-like (%SLD) disfluencies, percentage of words in mazes (%MzWds), number of total words, number of different words, and mean length of utterance in words. Results Cross-linguistic, pairwise comparisons revealed significant differences with medium effect sizes for %ND and %MzWds (both lower for English) as well as for number of different words (lower for Spanish). On average, the total percentage of mazed words was higher than 10% in both languages, a pattern driven primarily by %ND; %SLDs were below 1% in both languages. Multiple linear regression models for %ND and %SLD in each language indicated that %MzWds was the primary predictor across languages beyond other language measures and demographic variables. Conclusions The findings extend the evidence base with regard to the frequency and type of disfluencies that can be expected in bilingual children who do not stutter in grades prekindergarten to Grade 4. The data indicate that %MzWds and %ND can similarly index the normal disfluencies of bilingual children during narrative production. The potential clinical implications of the findings from this study are discussed.
