PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of the use of problem-based learning (PBL) with engineering students at a technical university in Malaysia.Design/methodology/approachThe setting provided a unique opportunity to evaluate the impact of PBL, since Universiti Kuala Lumpur offers both the traditional, predominantly classroom-focussed approach to engineering and the more hands-on approach referred to as Higher Technical and Vocational Education and Training (HTVET). The study sample consisted of 453 third-year students’ enroled in both programmes at Universiti Kuala Lumpur.FindingsStudents in the HTVET programme responded better to PBL teaching methods, as evidenced by improved performance on written as well as lab-based assessments. This result indicates that students using the hands-on approach advocated by HTVET tend to obtain the greatest benefit from experiential, student-centred learning approaches. The analysis suggests the possibility that the PBL approach is a moderator of student performance in HTVET programmes. This possibility merits further investigation.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample included students from only one institution of higher learning, which was chosen because both types of programmes are offered there. In addition, the current study does not consider potential mediating or moderating variables.Originality/valueThe findings provide an empirical basis for implementing PBL as a form of experiential learning at higher education institutions, especially those using the HTVET model. Furthermore, they provide a justification for designing curriculum structures and student learning time with an emphasis on active and experiential learning, thereby maximising the effectiveness of a hands-on approach, rather than the “minds-on” theoretical approach advocated by traditional engineering programmes in enhancing the teaching and learning experience.

Era globalisasi berdampak pada tuntutan dilakukan restorasi terhadap dunia pendidikan di Indonesia dalam berbagai aspek demi memajukan kualitas dan mengatasi kesenjangan yang terjadi pada semua jenjang pendidikan khususnya pada aspek sistem pembelajaran yang digunakan agar dapat menghasilkan sumberdaya manusia (SDM) yang mumpuni dan mampu bersaing dalam kancah global. Perguruan tinggi sebagai salah satu komponen utama dalam sistem pendidikan diharapkan dapat berperan aktif dalam meningkatkan sistem pembelajaran yang diselenggarakan untuk dapat menghasilkan lulusan yang berkualifikasi dibidangnya. Fenomena kualitas input yang relatif buruk menjadi salah satu faktor utama terjadinya kesulitan belajar pada mahasiswa di perguruan tinggi swasta pada umumnya. Kondisi tersebut sangat ironis dengan adanya tuntutan globalisasi khususnya TVET (Technical and Vocational Education Training) abad XXI bahwa mahasiswa lulusan perguruan tinggi harus memiliki kualifikasi higher competitive untuk dapat bersaing di dunia kerja. Umumnya, mahasiswa yang masuk PTS memiliki nilai rata-rata akademik dibawah standar. Pengembangan pembelajaran pada matakuliah sistem basis data mengacu pada model pembelajaran problem based learning (PBL) dalam mengatasi kesulitan belajar. Konsep pengembangan diawali dengan melakukan kajian literatur dan beberapa hasil penelitian terkait oleh peneliti untuk menemukan kebaruan dan untuk mempelajari trend pembelajaran saat ini. Prosedur pengembangan dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode 4D yang terdiri atas 4 (empat) tahapan yakni tahap define, design, develop dan tahap disseminate. Penelitian ini bertujuan menghasilkan model pembelajaran sistem database yang valid, reliabel dan efektif. Model ini secara sistematis mengacu pada siyntak model problem based learning (PBL) untuk mengatasi kesulitan belajar. Model pembelajaran sistem database ini juga menghasilkan perangkat pembelajaran berupa Silabus, RPS, Buku Ajar, dan Modul sistem database yang valid, efektif, dan praktis dalam mengatasi kesulitan belajar mahasiswa.

The learning improvement of physical education can be done through implementing learning approach which is suitable for 21st Century era. This research is a descriptive quantitative research which aims to describe the effectiveness of the hang style long jump learning using problem-based learning approach based on students’ learning outcomes and attitude in vocational high school context. The subject of the research were students of  X ATR 1 and X TKRO 1 students of SMKN 1 Cangkringan. The data were obtained from the result of observation sheets, learning outcome tests, and questionnaire of students’ attitudes towards learning. The result showed that hang style long jump learning using problem-based learning approach was effective based on students’ learning outcomes and learning attitudes. The passing students reached 100% for X ATR 1 students and 80,65% for X TKRO 1 students.  The students’ learning attitudes towards physical education subject in the category of minimum more than 80% high were 100% for X ATR 1 students and 90.32% for X TKRO 1 students.

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan aktivitas siswa dalam pembelajaran Akidah Akhlak melalui Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah di kelas IX E MTsN Olak Kemang Kota Jambi. Penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang dilakukan dua siklus yang terdiri dari: perencanaan, tindakan, pengamatan dan refleksi. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 32 siswa kelas IX E MTsN Olak Kemang Jambi. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan lembar observasi dan catatan lapangan. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif. Dari hasil penelitian ini diketahui bahwa pembelajaran akidah akhlak dengan pembelajaran berbasis masalah dapat meningkatkan aktivitas belajar di kelas IX E MTsN Olak Kemang Kota Jambi. Hasil analisis data menunjukan bahwa terjadi peningkatan aktivitas belajar siswa untuk setiap indikator yang diteliti. Peningkatan aktivitas siswa yang dimaksud adalah terjadinya peningkatan aktivitas siswa selama proses pembelajaran berlangsung. Siswa aktif merespon pertanyaan guru, mengemukakan alasan, menjelaskan kepada teman, mempresentasikan hasil diskusi kelompok dan membuat kesimpulan Kata Kunci: Aktivitas Siswa, Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah, Akidah Akhlak Abstract [Tittle: Improving Student’ Activity In Akidah Akhlak Course Through Problem Based Learning Approach]. This research was aimed to improve students’ activity in Akidah Akhlak through Problem Based Learning (PBL)at MTsN Olak Kemang Jambi city.This was a classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles in which each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation and reflection. The subject of this research was the third year students of MTsN Olak Kemang Jambi that consisted of 32 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation sheet and field note. The data then was analyzed descriptively.The result of the research showed that the use of PBL approach could improve students’ activity in Akidah Akhlak at MTsN Olak Kemang Jambi. After applying PBL approach, the students had a willingness to answer teacher’s questions, give opinions and plain them to the peers, present the result of the discussion and take conclusion.
