AbstractLow-temperature properties of a crystal containing type I superconducting inclusions of two different materials have been studied. In the approximation assuming that the inclusions size is much smaller than the coherence length/penetration depth of the magnetic field, the theory of magnetoresistance of a crystal containing spherical superconducting inclusions of two different materials has been developed, and magnetization of crystals has been calculated. The obtained results can be used for correct explanation of the low temperature conductivity in binary and more complex semiconductors, in which precipitation of the superconducting phase is possible during the technological processing or under external impact.

A 3 T superconducting magnet has been designed and constructed for magnetic Compton-profile (MCP) measurements with the new capabilities that the magnetic field direction can be altered quickly (within 5 s) and liquid-He refill is not required for more than one week. For the latter capability, two refrigerators have been directly attached to the cryostat to maintain the low temperature of the radiation shields and for the recondensation of liquid He. The system has been satisfactorily operated for over one week.

A phenomenological model, F, of the superconducting phase of systems with spin-charge separation and antiferromagnetically induced pairing is studied. Above Hc1, magnetic flux can always pierce the superconductor in vortices with flux hc/2e, but regimes are found in which vortices with flux hc/e are preferred. Little-Park and other experiments, which examine periodicities with a varying magnetic field, always observe a period of hc/2e. The low energy properties of a symplectic large-N expansion of a model of the cuprate superconductors are argued to be well described by F. This analysis and some normal state properties of the cuprates suggest that hc/e vortices should be stable at the lowest dopings away from the insulating state at which superconductivity first occurs.

The objective of the present article is to study the influence of TiB2 addition on the transformation behavior of yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP). A range of TZP(Y)–TiB2 composites with different zirconia starting powder grades and TiB2 phase contents (up to 50 vol%) were processed by the hot-pressing route. Thermal expansion data, as obtained by thermo-mechanical analysis were used to assess the ZrO2 phase transformation in the composites. The thermal expansion hysteresis of the transformable ceramics provides information concerning the transformation behavior in the temperature range of the martensitic transformation and the low-temperature degradation. Furthermore, the transformation behavior and susceptibility to low-temperature degradation during thermal cycling were characterized in terms of the overall amount and distribution of the yttria stabilizer, zirconia grain size, possible dissolution of TiB2 phase, and the amount of residual stress generated in the Y-TZP matrix due to the addition of titanium diboride particles. For the first time, it is demonstrated in the present work that the thermally induced phase transformation of tetragonal zirconia in the Y-TZP composites can be controlled by the intentional addition of the monoclinic zirconia particles into the 3Y-TZP matrix.
