This paper builds on the work of Abraham Masolow who said that his article was meant to be a starting point for future research into the concept of becoming human. The paper integrates concepts from neuropsychology, neurobiology, and trauma informed services to present a holistic framework within which we can discuss the processes involved in becoming interdependent human beings. Rather than seeing safety as a set of needs within the ddevelopmental framework, the paper presents the concept that safety is the framework, the matrix, within which developmental processes occur.

Based on the analysis of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, this study explored the method of product design which takes five levels of human needs as a starting point. By combining with the dual attributes of modern Chinese furniture on industrial product and cultural product, this research proposed a design model of modern Chinese furniture based on hierarchy of needs, which can provide with cross-references to design practice.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the levels of motivation and needs satisfaction of academic library employees, adopting Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to examine individuals’ motivation. Design/methodology/approach The study collects and analyzes quantitative survey data. The research population comprises 108 employees working across eight college libraries at Kuwait University. Findings While participants generally agreed that their needs were being satisfied at each of the five levels of Maslow’s hierarchy, they reported higher levels of satisfaction of their self-actualization and social needs. Self-actualization is the summit of Maslow’s motivation theory representing the quest for reaching one’s full potential as a person. Research limitations/implications One limitation is the relatively small sample size due to Kuwait having only one public university. Future research could overcome this limitation by investigating both private and public universities. Practical implications This research contributes significantly and in various ways to understanding motivation in a library setting. It elucidates many aspects of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory criticized in previous literature. Overall, the study’s results should be useful to scholars in the library field interested in motivation, to academic librarians and to managers in academia. Originality/value Though many prior studies have focused on motivation in a library setting, Maslow’s theory has been little considered in the context of academic libraries. This study uses a theoretical framework based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to understand and explain the levels of motivation and needs satisfaction of academic library employees.

The cause of body donation is of great medical and social importance. How to get rid of the shackles of traditional ideas in order to accelerate the development of body donation has become a hot topic under the premise that the willingness of Chinese to participate in body donation is generally low or even unable to meet the needs of medical development. Having an intense sense of social responsibility and a developmental dialectical thinking, college students can view body donation more rationally. For this reason, college students are the ideal target group for the cause of body donation to break away from the shackles of traditional ideology and accelerate the development of itself. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is an essential theory in behavioral science, which is mainly embodied in the intuitive analysis of human needs and the targeted effect of action incentive. Under the circumstances of comprehensive understanding the needs of college students, this paper would deeply analysis the basis, significance and correspondence of their willingness of participating in body donation and discuss how to improve it around five sorts of needs based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

This article analyzes the philosophical and economic definitions of ends and means and the close relationship between ends and means. Based on this analysis, we believe that human wants and needs belong to the category of the end from the perspective of philosophy, and transportation belongs to the category of means from the perspective of philosophy. In the context of economics, the means represent resources, the ends represent the human needs or want. In the philosophical sense, end belongs to the category of intrinsic value, and means belongs to the category of instrumental value. Therefore, ends belong to the subjective category, and means belong to the objective category. In the consumer behavior theory of economics, the nature of human wants/needs is unlimited; different wants/needs have different degrees of intensity; human wants/needs tend to be competitive, due to the limited resources. Due to the above nature of human wants/needs, human wants/needs can be divided into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and due to means belonging to the objective category, resources/means can’t be divided hierarchically modeled Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Transportation belongs to the category of means/resources, so the theory of Transportation System Users’ Hierarchy of Needs is inappropriate. We further pointed out that the creators and proponents of the theory of transportation system users’ hierarchy of needs did not provide a sufficiently strong argument for the rationality of this theory to further strengthens our view, i.e., the theory of Transportation System Users’ Hierarchy of Needs is inappropriate.

End-user programming, which consists of people writing programs for their own use, has the potential to provide diverse benefits both personally and professionally. Yet, while studies indicate over 70 million American workers use spreadsheets or do other programming at least monthly, hundreds of millions do not. To identify opportunities for motivating broader and deeper levels of end-user programming, this article reviews existing literature on what factors drive adoption of end-user programming. A total of 15 factors were identified as potential motivations. Viewing these results through the lens of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs suggests opportunities for future research.
