Ground water quality conformance to the World Health Organisation standards for drinking water was carried out and inferred to the health risks associated with use of such quality of water. Water samples were collected thrice a month, from nine boreholes, over a period of twelve months and analysed for physical, chemical and biological parameters. Chemical parameters were tested using UV-Vis photometry. Physical parameters were measured using HI9829 waterproof portable logging multi-parameter meter and biological parameters were determined using the Minimal Media ONRG-MUG test and the Membrane Filtration Method (MF). Results shows that total hardness and Fe concentration were above limit in 78% and 56% of the sampled boreholes, respectively. pH, EC, Ca, Cl, Fl, Mn, Mg and Turbidity were within the acceptable WHO limits. Of the sampled boreholes, 67% were not conforming to the Escherichia coli loads recommended for drinking water. Parametric correlations showed strong and significant correlations between chlorides and fluorides (r = 0.68; p < 0.05), Nitrates and Sulphates (r = 0.78; p < 0.05). There is need to treat borehole water to eliminate E. coli and reduce nitrates and total hardness. Furthermore, analysis and monitoring systems to determine temporal variability and health risks, respectively, needs to be put in place.

Water resources generally cover surface and ground water. Surface water will be more easily polluted than ground water, because surface water is more easily contaminated with sources of pollution so that people use water sourced from deep ground water.  In Jambi city particular the Kenali Asam Atas area, is included in a residential area with a moderate density of approximately ± 6,903 Ha. PDAM service area coverage is still 2%, from the service area coverage of 10965 SR. The purpose of this study was to reduce Fe and pH parameters in deep groundwater using downflow and aeration filtration methods on variations in thickness of rubber seed shell charcoal by filtration method and variation of processing time in the aeration process using bubble aerator. The results of the downflow filtration method using variations in the thickness of 15 cm and 30 cm rubber seed shell charcoal for Fe parameters of 0.302 mg / l and pH of 5.08, while in the aeration treatment process using a variation of processing time of 30 minutes and 60 minutes for Fe parameters amounting to 0.354 mg / l and pH of 5.23.

We investigated the reproducibility and validity of a simple method of measuring red cell deformability (filtration of whole blood through 5 µ sieves) and its relationship to haematocrit, blood viscosity, fibrinogen, white cell count, sex and smoking. The mean coefficient of variation in normals was 3. 7%. Tanned red cells showed marked loss of deformability. Blood filtration rate correlated with haematocrit (r = 0. 99 on dilution of samples, r = 0. 7 in 120 normals and patients). After correction for haematocrit, deformability correlated with high shear viscosity, but not low shear viscosity, fibrinogen or white cell count. In 60 normals there was no significant difference between males and females, or smokers and non-smokers, but in 11 smokers there was an acute fall in deformability after smoking 3 cigarettes (p<0. 05). Reduced deformability was found in acute myocardial infarction (n = 15, p<0. 01) and chronic peripheral arterial disease (n = 15, p<0. 01). The technique is reproducible, detects rigid cells and appears useful in the study of vascular disease.
