Producing high quality apples in mature trees of the cv. 'Golden Delicious' is rather difficult because of the russeting of it's fruits, especially in seasons of high relative humidity and/or wetness. Earlier experiments proved the possibility to decrease russeting by treatments of GA4.7 during a period after petal fall. Phyl-Gold, a product of Phylaxia Co. (ai. 10 g1-1 GA4.7) was applied to inhibit russet formation in fruit skin of 'Golden Delicious' apples. Four consecutive sprays were carried out (with 10 ppm a.i.) in weekly intervals, starting at petal fall and tank-mixed with the current pesticides of the plant protection program. Due to the GA4.7 application the russet formation decreased at a rate of economical importance. As for the side-effects of treatments, fruit set was reduced slightly in trees treated, however, there was no consequent influence on return bloom.

This study was performed on 24 clonal rootstocks and 4 scion apple cultivars to evaluate rootstock/cultivar combinations for susceptibility to fire blight (Erwinia amylovora). For this aim, the clonal rootstocks were planted in plastic greenhouse in 1992 and grafted with 4 cultivars (Golden Delicious, Dulcit, Domino and Dione) in 1998. A total of 96 rootstock/cultivar combinations were tested during 1998–2001. Each year, 10 to 30 actively growing shoots per one combination were inoculated with the pathogen. The shoots were inoculated by cutting through first unfolding leaves with scissors dipped into inoculum (109 cfu/ml). The trees were misted to create a high relative humidity. The susceptibility of the test roostock/cultivar combinations was evaluated by calculating the length of necrosis to the total shoot length 40 days after inoculation. The degree of susceptibility of cultivar tested varied depending on the rootstocks and years. In order of decreasing to increasing levels of fire blight susceptibility of four cultivars tested, the pattern observed was Dulcit, Golden Delicious, Domino (moderately susceptible) and Dione (very susceptible). The lowest susceptibility of four cultivars tested was observed on TE 52 rootstock (on average, the cultivars were evaluated as intermediate), the highest susceptibility was on JTE-E and M9 rootstocks (the cultivars were very susceptible). The influence of 21 remaining rootstocks on susceptibility in scion cultivars was not marked. Thus some rootstocks can render the scion cultivars more fire blight susceptible or more resistant.

An ambient atmosphere-compatible vapor-assisted deposition strategy was developed to fabricate high-quality perovskite films, even at a high relative humidity of 60%. By using the optimized crystallization process, efficient (η = 18.90%), air-stable photovoltaic performance was accomplished.

In 1997 and 1998, we determined the effects of defoliation on return bloom and fruit set following a light cropping year. In one study, `Braeburn' trees were hand-thinned to a crop density (CD) of 3 fruit/cm 2 trunk cross sectional area (TCSA) in late May 1997, and then either completely defoliated or half of the tree defoliated by hand on one of five dates between June and Sept. 1997. Compared to a nondefoliated control, both whole and half-tree defoliation on all dates reduced fruit count and yield efficiency (kilograms per square centimeter of TCSA) and affected fruit weight, starch, firmness, and soluble solids in 1997. In 1998, return bloom and fruit set were reduced by most 1997 defoliation treatments. Compared to other dates, defoliation on 3 July caused the greatest reduction in return bloom in both whole and half-defoliated trees. In another study, `Braeburn' trees were hand-thinned to a CD of 5 in late May 1998; complete defoliation by hand on 1, 15, or 29 July reduced return bloom and fruit set in 1999; the 1 July treatment resulted in zero return bloom. `Golden Delicious' and `York' trees were thinned to a CD of 3 in late May 1998 and were hand-defoliated on 21 July or 12 August by removing every other leaf or removing three of every four leaves over the entire tree. In 1999, return bloom and spur and lateral fruit set were reduced by all defoliation treatments. Fruit set was most reduced by the 12 Aug. treatment. Fruit set for `York' was lower than for `Golden Delicious' in all cases.
