Abstract. The European Diploma in Psychology defines a common European standard for the competences required to practice as a psychologist. This paper describes how that standard was developed and defined, and why it was considered important to bring together the traditional input-based specification of professional competence, in terms of curriculum and training course content, with a more outcome-oriented approach that focuses on the competences that a professional psychologist needs to demonstrate in practice. The paper addresses three specific questions. What are the competences that a psychologist should possess? Are these competences the same for all areas of practice within professional psychology? How can these competences be assessed?

The potential of using ground birch (Betula verrucosa Ehrh.) bark as an eco-friendly additive in urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives for plywood manufacturing was investigated in this work. Five-ply plywood panels were fabricated in the laboratory from beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) veneers bonded with UF adhesive formulations comprising three addition levels of birch bark (BB) as a filler (10%, 15%, and 20%). Two UF resin formulations filled with 10% and 20% wheat flour (WF) were used as reference samples. The mechanical properties (bending strength, modulus of elasticity and shear strength) of the laboratory-fabricated plywood panels, bonded with the addition of BB in the adhesive mixture, were evaluated and compared with the European standard requirements (EN 310 and EN 314-2). The mechanical strength of the plywood with the addition of BB in the adhesive mixture is acceptable and met the European standard requirements. Markedly, the positive effect of BB in the UF adhesive mixture on the reduction of formaldehyde emission from plywood panels was also confirmed. Initially, the most significant decrease in formaldehyde release (up to 14%) was measured for the plywood sample, produced with 15% BB. After four weeks, the decrease in formaldehyde was estimated up to 51% for the sample manufactured with 20% BB. The performed differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), also confirmed the findings of the study. As this research demonstrated, BB as a waste or by-product of wood processing industry, can be efficiently utilized as an environmentally friendly, inexpensive alternative to WF as a filler in UF adhesive formulations for plywood manufacturing.

The demand for timber has increased significantly in recent years. Therefore, reliable tools are needed to predict the mechanical properties of sawn timber, especially for structural applications. Very complex models require a lot of input data for analysis, which cannot always be guaranteed, especially in industrial practice. Thus, a simplified model for material description was developed and assessed with experiments (static bending tests carried out in accordance with the guidelines suggested in the European standard EN 408) and an analytical approach (gamma method according to the guidelines given in the European standard EN 1995). The effective stiffness was calculated as a major parameter, which has an influence on the elements’ behavior. The model included a near-surface mounted (NSM) local reinforcement technique, with CFRP strips of Scots pine timber beams being subjected to bending stresses. It is anticipated that the developed model can be a starting point for the repair engineering field, contributing to decision-making regarding conservation technique selection and range. Next, improvements of the model will provide more and more realistic results for numerical analysis in terms of the obtained failure mechanisms for sawn timber elements.

Abstract It is important to evaluate leaching behavior in agricultural soils to prevent the pollution of groundwater by pesticides. We identified the distribution coefficients (Kd) of ten pesticides with different physicochemical properties and compared their leaching characteristics using wick lysimeters from three distinct soil types on Jeju Island. The Kd values varied by pesticide and soil, but were within the range of 1.2 to 4231 L kg−1. Based on the European standard (Kd < 10 L kg−1), six pesticides (alachlor, ethoprophos, carbofuran, napropamide, tebuconazole, and etridiazole) were mobile in at least one tested soil, and their soil organic carbon affinity was ≤ 5.811. This value differed greatly from the other pesticides (16.533 and higher). The solubility of the six mobile pesticides was ≥ 32 mg L−1, which substantially differed from the other pesticides (≤ 0.71 mg L−1). Thus, we conclude that our mobility assessment, which is based on Kd values, can be used to predict the leaching of pesticides in the volcanic ash soils of Jeju Island. The use of pesticides should be strictly controlled to reduce the possibility of groundwater contamination.

Ostracoderm tubercles were recovered from the lower portion of two Black River Group sections between Montreal and Quebec City. Some of these fish remains seem identical to tubercles of Astraspis desiderata from the Harding Sandstone of Colorado. The age of the Quebec remains is questionably earliest Blackriveran or basal Caradocian of the European standard. The remains were found in sandy carbonates probably laid down in the supratidal to shallow marine environments. It is concluded that these remains may represent part of a continent-wide, biostratigraphically useful vertebrate fauna and that bulk sampling and acid residuing might be a technique whereby sparse, fragmentary, earliest Paleozoic fish remains could be found.
