Abstract The general aim of this study is to determine the effects of learning management systems supported by social networking sites on learners’ academic achievements in distance education. The study group consisted of 75 undergraduate students from a state university in eastern Turkey. The data for the study, in which an experimental research design was used, were collected through an achievement test, which consisted of 40 multiple-choice questions. Within the scope of the research, a learning management system and a social networking site were utilized in a distance education course. As a result of the research, it was seen that social network supported distance learning activities created a more positive effect on the achievements of the learners than the distance learning activities. Also, it was determined that social network supported distance education activities were more effective in the acquisition of behaviours at the knowledge level of the cognitive domain than activities in other groups; however, the groups were not different from each other in relation to the acquisition of behaviours at the comprehension level of the cognitive domain. In this context, it was concluded that the learning management systems used in distance education should be supported by social networking sites to increase the academic achievement of learners.

Learning management systems (LMSs) provide possibilities to facilitate online teaching and learning; to create communities of inquiry, support dialogue and collaborative learning; and reduce students' sense of disconnectedness in distance learning. Nevertheless, studies show that LMSs are often under-utilized. This article reports on lecturers' perceptions of the use of an LMS in an open distance learning (ODL) institution in South Africa. The authors used a phenomenological case study and followed a qualitative approach. Interviews were conducted with ten lecturers from eight academic departments. The results reveal that participants used the LMS mainly for administration and to a lesser extent for teaching and learning, with a limited presence of a community of inquiry. The challenges reported by interviewees had poor access to the internet, a lack of skills, fear, and workload. The study suggests that if lecturers used the LMS for teaching and learning, it will yield many benefits for students.

The basic didactic principles of distance and traditional forms of education are considered. The use of learning management systems (Learning Management System) is relevant in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the process of transition of educational institutions to distance work and learning during quarantine, there was an expansion of the range of tools used and the expansion of the functionality of existing new tools. The main functional modules of modern learning management systems like Moodle, Google Classroom, Microsoft Office 365 and their implementation in distance learning are analyzed. The main functional modules of modern distance learning management systems are identified, they include such modules as system administration, access to educational materials, means to ensure communication between participants in the distance learning process, etc. Distance education is based on the principles and features of traditional forms of learning, in addition, new features are added, which are the use of Internet technologies for access to educational materials, online interaction between students and more. The peculiarities of implementation of the principles of distance and traditional forms of education on the example of higher education institutions of Ukraine (Berdiansk State Pedagogical University, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine) and Mexico (Autonomous Honored University of Puebla) are considered in the article. Based on the results of the study, general recommendations were developed for the simultaneous use of several platforms, which allows you to work from any device; under modern pandemic conditions, you can also use the mobile Internet, which increases the convenience and productivity; at any time you can view the necessary documents, perform tasks, responds to changes in the workflow, which allows you to learn quickly about innovations and change ways to solve problems. Thanks to the obtained results, teachers will be able to develop more effectively online learning environment. Keywords: distance learning, didactic principles, distance learning management system.

Engineering education in higher learning institute faces new challenges due to the rise of COVID-19 cases whereby classes have to be conducted online. In this regards, the use of learning management systems (LMS) are imperative for open and distance learning (ODL). The aim of this paper is to assess ODL using such LMS platform. Study was conducted in Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia where it involved a total of 51 academic staff. A quantitative method using online questionnaire was applied to evaluate main preferences of LMS for ODL, main purposes of LMS and issues arises from using such LMS platform. Results show that a variety of LMS has been utilized to support the ODL and majority of the academician showed positive feedback on the usefulness of such LMS. The only main concerns from the educators are plagiarism from the students that could create doubts and none trustworthy results on their performances. Otherwise, LMS is indeed an essential platform for ODL and must be encouraged to all educators such that it can be further improved and continuously utilized in the future.
