The results of the syntaxonomical and ecological studies on plant cover at the landscape reserve «Tsetsyno» located within administrative boundaries of the city of Chernivtsi, are presented. Forest vegetation belongs to 3 associations, 2 alliances, 2 orders of the class Carpino-Fagetea sylvaticae Jakucs ex Passarge 1968. According to the synphytoindicational analysis, these communities are mesophytic, hemihydrocontrastophobic, subacidophilous, semieutrophic, nitrophilous, and hemiaerobic. In study area, communities belong to the alliance Fagion sylvaticae Luquet 1926 are prevail, and communities of the alliance Tilio-Acerion Klika 1955 are much rare. Two habitat types listed in Annex 1 of the Habitats Directive (9130 Asperulo-Fagetum beech forests and 9180*Tilio-Acerion forests of slopes, screes and ravines), аs well as one habitat listed in Resolution 4 of the Bern Convention (G1.6: Fagus woodland), are distinguished here. Moreover, 5 rare plant communities according to the Green Book of Ukraine (2009), are reported. Among vascular plants, 8 species belong to CITES, 1 species (Cypripedium calceolus L.) – to the Annex I of the Bern Convention, and 11 species – to the Red Data Book of Ukraine (2009). This landscape reserve is consider as an Important Plant Area (IPA) – Tsetsyno and is a part of the regional landscape park «Chernivetskyi» (Emerald Network Area UA 0000085). The results obtained confirm significant sozological value of the landscape reserve.

On the base of research florochorology, studing the main herbarion collections (LW, LWKS, LWS) and analisis the literature the checklist of the spontaneous vascular plants for the territory of the Znesinnya Regional Landscape Park has been compiled. Some 727 species from 392 genera, 108 families, 59 orders, 5 classes and 4 divisions are presented from the investigated area. Among them, the most common part (77.7%) belongs to the representatives of the Magnoliopsida class, while the Liliopsida class of representations is significantly less (19.3%). With a wide range of disputes, coniferous trees are stocked less than 3.0% of all types. The species distribution to the leading families and genera have been analysed. For the first time were recorded the present habitats of 30 rare species (15 from the Red Data Book of Ukraine, аnd 15 species are rare in the region). The locations of the rare species with state sozological status (Dactylorhiza incarnata (L.) Soó, Epipactis palustris (L.) Crantz, Listera ovata (L.) R.Br., Lilium martagon L., Orchis militaris L.) were offered for the first time. Two species from addition of the First Bern Convention (Cypripedium calceolus and Pulsatilla grandis) are disappeared on the territory of the park.

Abstract Leucorrhinia pectoralis is included in the Bern Convention (Appendix II), the Habitats Directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC) (Annexes II and IV), the IUCN European Red List of Dragonflies, the IUCN Red List of Mediterranean Dragonflies and in the Red List of Dragonflies of the Carpathians. Typical environments for this species are peatlands, a habitat that is in decline and needs special protection throughout Europe. In the summer of 2014 we investigated ROSCI0247 “Tinovul Mare Poiana Stampei” and identified two males of Leucorrhinia pectoralis. At 4.5 km from this protected area, within the same period, we found several dozen individuals of L. pectoralis in a peat exploit area, called “Turbamin”, an example of human activities contributing accidentally to maintain a rare and protected species in nature.

The article presents data on the diversity and substrate groups of bryoflora of the Znesinnya Regional Landscape Park (Znesinnya RLP), located in the city of Lviv (Western Ukraine). Based on field research carried out in the period 2015-2018 and analysis of herbarium collections, an inventory was made of the bryoflora of the Znesinnya RLP. A total of 113 species of bryoflora belonging to 66 genera, 35 families and 2 divisions are presented from the investigated area. Of these, 105 species are members of the division Bryophyta and 8 belong to Marchantiophyta. Six regionally rare species of bryophytes have been recorded, namely Pellia endiviifolia, P. epiphylla, Encalypta streptocarpa, Fissidens exilis, Cirriphyllum crassinervium and Sciurohypnum starkei. With regard to substrate preferences, epigeous species of bryophytes predominated and accounted for 89.0% of the total number of species. The largest proportion of bryophytes occurred on bare soil (46.0%), while 36.3% and 25.7% species were found on soil among herbaceous vegetation and on soil with gravel, respectively. Stony substrates were colonized by 42.5% of bryophyte species, with 19.5% of species occurring on artificial stony substrates. In addition, 24.8% of the species belonged to epixils inhabiting old stumps and logs of varying degrees of decay, and the same proportion was represented by epiphytic species of bryophytes. The smallest proportion (10.7%) of bryophytes was confined to water bodies and swampy ecotopes.

AbstractCladium mariscus (L.) Pohl (Cyperaceae) is a rare species in Europe considered by several authors to be a relict of the early Holocene period. It is listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, Annexes of the Habitat Directive and the Bern Convention. Communities with domination of this species are included in the Green Data Book of Ukraine. Substantial differences in major ecological factors for Cladium mariscus communities in the western (carbonate bogs) and the southern (marshes and floating swamps of the northern Black Sea) regions of Ukraine were shown. The author carried out comparisons of relevés characterizing different communities with Cladium mariscus within Europe. Based on the results of TWINSPAN analysis, four associations were identified, confirmed by floristic indices and ecological data: Cladietum marisci Allorge 1921, Soncho maritimi-Cladietum marisci (Br.-Bl. & O. de Bolòs 1957) Cirujano 1980, Dorycnio recti-Cladietum marisci Gradstein & Smittenberg 1977 and Junco maritimi-Cladietum marisci (Br.-Bl. & O. de Bolòs 1957) Géhu & Biondi 1988. Thus, in addition to the association Cladietum marisci, a new one was indicated for Ukraine, Junco maritimi-Cladietum marisci.

The paper represents results of surveys carried out in the Western Stara Planina Mts within the last four years in order to improve the knowledge of the butterfly fauna, especially in the Bulgarian part of the mountain. A total of 150 species of Lepidoptera (Papilionoidea) was recorded with comments on their distribution in the Bulgarian part of the studied region. Nineteen species were recorded for the first time in the Bulgarian part of the mountain and one species (Apatura metis) – for the Serbian part. It has been found that the highest butterfly diversity is linked to the largest limestone area in the mountain near Komshtitsa Village where 101 species were observed. Interesting records for some rare or endangered species (Muschampia cribrellum, M. tessellum, Lycaena helle, Kirinia climene, Apatura metis, Nymphalis vaualbum, Melitaea didyma, M. arduinna, M. diamina and Brenthis ino) are discussed in detail. The high conservation value of the studied region proves by the species considered as threatened at the European level, of which seven species are included in the Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive, 12 species are listed in the Red Data Book of European butterflies and 26 in the European Red List of Butterflies.

The article reports about chorology, phytocenotic, biotopical features of 24 orchid species (Orchidaceae Juss.) on the territory of Chernivtsi. The history of studying orchids in the city is described. The authors give the cadastre of locations of orchids based on studies of material at the herbariums (CHER, KW, LE, LW, МНА), literary sources and own collecting expeditions. There found 24 species of orchids in Chernivtsi. 6 of them (Anacamptis coriophora (L.) R.M. Bateman, Pridgeon et M.W. Chase s.l., A. palustris (Jacq.) R.M. Bateman, Pridgeon et M.W. Chase, Corallorhiza trífida Châtel., Dactylorhiza cordigera (Fries) Soó, Orchis purpurea Huds. та О. signifera Vest.) are not been confirmed by modern collecting expeditions, 3 of them (Anacamptis palustris, Orchis purpurea, О. signifera) were listed from herbarium and literary sources of the second half of ХІХ century. At the moment these species and their habitats are suspected to have been lost due to urban transformation. 17 species (70,8%) of orchids have been found in 1-5 habitats, and 7 species (29,2%) – in 6-20 habitats. Orchids are the part of 4 alliance 4 orders and 2 classes of natural vegetation Carpino-Fagetea sylvaticae Jakucs ex Passarge 1968 and Molinio-Arrhenatheretea Tx. 1937 and 5 types of habitats (4 of them are natural and 1 – synanthropic) on the territory of Chernivtsi. Natural plant communities with orchids belong to 4 habitats from Annex I of the Council Directive – 9130, 9170, 6510, 6440 and 4 biotopes listed in Resolution №4 of the Bern Convention – G1.6, G1.A1, E2.2, Е3.4. Remnants of natural forest biotopes having orchids were survived by the designation of landscape sanctuary – «Tsetsino» (430 ha) the object of national significance and «Haryachyy Urban» (108 ha) the object of regional significance. There are 11 and 2 species of orchids on the territory of «Tsetsinо» and «Haryachyy Urban» respectively. Cultivated coenosis of the biggest Park Architecture Monument of regional significance «Zhovtnevyy» (63,5 ha) have 3 speсies of orchids. 4 species are not protected. These results are important for follow-up monitoring measures on rare species of plants in Chernivtsi.

The research’s general objective was to study and evaluate; the function, aesthetic and agronomical aspects of side street plants at Ijen Street, Malang. Plant evaluation was needed to optimize plant effectiveness on the side of the streets, in realizing the city’s road concept that gives fluentness, safety, and improving environmental street visual quality. This is important especially for the side street plants to fulfil architectural, functional, and aesthetical values for the city environment. There was a lack of functional effectiveness at the traffic island as a site, caused by none continuation of tree planting. At one segment of the street the trees where physical and visual barries causing the inconvenience of concealing clear view. All segments of Ijen Street don’t have the function of a collision buffer. There was a windbreak function created by plant settlement with a corridor form. Plant function as sun control was accommodated in all of the street segments. Generally, the plant cover function by the plants has not been completed. The erosion control was accommodated by plant settlement at the traffic island in the street of Ijen. Plants function as noise control and identity was fulfilled with the existence of Rhoistonia reggia along the street. Overall the plants of Ijen Street have a lot of functions that help the site to improve environmental quality. Assessment of the esthetic aspect obtained from the election of plants types and a planting plan revealed that improvement to support the development function was required, according to of plants as agronomy value the existing plants can support plants function and add esthetical value.

This research examined soilless green roof substrate blends on an existing modular extensive green roof in Denver, Colorado, USA. Substrate blends evaluated include an extensive green roof substrate, Green Grid® and Green Grid® plus varying percentages of ZeoPro™ H-Plus. Plant taxa used included Sedum acre L., Sedum album L., Sedum spurium Marsch-Bieb. ‘Dragon's Blood’ and S. spurium ‘John Creech’. Substrate blends were evaluated based on plant taxa growth performance. Data collected included digital images to measure plant area covered using digital image analysis (DIA) and substrate volumetric moisture content (VMC). All data were analyzed over two growing seasons using the GLIMMIX procedure in SAS as multiple comparisons of substrate blends for each taxa, DIA data were analyzed from eight dates and VMC data were analysed from seven dates. The addition of zeolite (ZeoPro™) to the typical extensive green roof substrate improved establishment year plant cover for S. acre and S. album but hindered overwintering. Conversely, the two cultivars of S. spurium did not show a benefit of plant cover from the addition of ZeoPro™ in the first year but did the second year. As the percentage of ZeoPro™ in the substrate increased, VMC also increased.


The long-term floristic research in the City of Kharkiv, as well as analysis of the literature data and CWU herbarium materials recorded 95 species, 65 genera and 38 families of plants in the present water and wetland flora of the city. Of these, 18 species occur in the water bodies, and 77 species in the wetlands. An annotated list of the water and wetland flora is compiled. All species are provided with the data on their distribution within the city, habitat conditions, types of geographic range and conservation status. Geographical analysis revealed the general correspondence of the city flora to the typical flora of the region. The city flora is represented by the groups of species with five regional types; the Circumpolar (35 species, 36.8 %) and the Eurasian (26 species, 27.3 %) types are the most speciose. In terms of conservation importance, 15 recorded species require protection ‒ two species of water vascular plants and 13 species of wetlands. Of these, four species are listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine (Anacamptis coriophora, Anacamptis palustris, Dactylorchiza majalis, Epipactis palustris); seven species are in the list of plants that require special protection in the Kharkiv Region (Carex pseudocyperus, Nuphar luteum, Parnassia palustris, Ranunculus circinatum, Typha laxmannii, Valeriana officinalis, Vallisneria spiralis); three species are listed in Annex II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES II) (Anacamptis coriophora, Anacamptis palustris, Epipactis palustris); one species (Epipactis palustris) is in the list of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES); and two species are in the Red List of Macrophytes (Nuphar lutea and Glyceria arundinacea). One species is also a member of а plant association listed in the Green Data Book of Ukraine, and two species are the members of vegetation groups in the Green List of Kharkiv Region. Five invasive species were found in the city flora: three water species (Pistia stratiotes, Vallisneria spiralis, Elodea canadensis) and two wetland species (Echinocistis lobata and Bidens frondosa).
