Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC) modulation is one of the most significant enablers for future 5G technologies. It is a modulation technique for resolving inter-carrier and inter-symbol interference using two possible methods: Frequency Spreading (FS) and Poly Phase (PP) implementation. Cyclic prefixes are used in OFDM for signal robustness, but they have some disadvantages in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. FBMC is used to solve the disadvantages of OFDM and save a bandwidth.  In this paper, performance comparisons in terms of symbol error rate between OFDM and FBMC systems in AWGN and multipath fading channels are presented. The obtained results show that FBMC over performs OFDM in multipath fading channels and the improvement margin is increased as the number of subcarriers decreased.

In this paper, we propose an improved channel estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in sparse multipath fading channels. The proposed method transforms the channel estimates into an ordered space and uses the minimum description length (MDL) criterion to estimate the number of paths and the path positions. Simulation results demonstrated that an improved channel estimation performance is obtained due to the reduction of signal space.

This paper presents the performance analysis of the multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems for multipath fading and multiuser interference channels. A closed form approximation of the BER performance of the MB-OFDM UWB system with multiple interferences is proposed. Based on the derived approximation, the effects on the BER performance for the choice of the codeword constraint lengths of the convolutional encoder, the length of the cyclic prefix, and the multiuser environments of two or more interferers are thoroughly discussed. Four UWB multipath fading channels are also investigated for the BER performance of the MB-OFDM UWB system. The simulated results provide us with useful information to appropriately choose the parameters of the MB-OFDM UWB system for the sake of achieving the BER performance that conforms to requirement of the FCC standards.

This study presents a novel preamble-based timing offset estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed method is robust, immune to the carrier frequency offset (CFO), and independent of the structure of the preamble. The performance of the new method is demonstrated in terms of mean square error (MSE) obtained by simulation in multipath fading channels. The results indicate that the new method significantly improves timing performance in comparison with existing methods.

Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) is one of the effective candidates for the fifth generation of wireless communication networks. 5G (5th-generation wireless systems) is accepted as the next major stage of mobile telecommunication technology. The extent of 5G will be expanded mobile broadband services to next-generation automobiles and connected machines. In particular, filter bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) is determined as the future generation 5G air interface by researchers recently. Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) is admitted as one of the alternative technologies for multicarrier modulation. Compared to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), FBMC has better spectrum shape and supports mobility. Therefore, efficient hardware implementations have highly interested researchers. Cyclic prefix (CP) and guard band are used for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and this causes loss of spectral efficiency, but FBMC applications do not need CP and guard band. Due to the fact that FBMC has offset QAM (OQAM) and band-limited filtering features on each subcarrier, the need for CP and guard band is eliminated. In this paper, novel pipelined hardware architecture of the filter design of FBMC/OQAM modulator has been proposed.
