Volunteers working in community programs make a difference in many neighborhoods, counties, and states. But, the value of a volunteer program is sometimes overlooked. Documenting the value of volunteer programs helps to celebrate success today and promote growth in the future. The manager of a volunteer program is in a good position to monitor and report the success and value of that program. This document is FCS9239, one of a series of the Family Youth and Community Sciences Department, UF/IFAS Extension. Original publication date March 1, 2006.

Cicada killers, or giant ground hornets, are among the largest wasps in Florida (up to 40 mm in length). They are conspicuous insects, since the males are territorial and will butt or grapple with intruders including other males. There are 22 species of Sphecius Dahlbom in the world and all hunt cicadas as far as is known. Two of four Nearctic species of Sphecius occur in Florida. The females of the common Florida species, Sphecius speciosus (Drury), hunt Tibicen spp. cicadas and can dig 4-foot burrows in the ground with several branches and cells. The provisioning with cicadas is nearly specific to Sphecius in the family Sphecidae, but is known in a few other sphecids such as Liogorytes joergenseni (Brethes) from Argentina (Bohart and Stange 1976). This document is EENY295, one of a series of the Entomology and Nematology Department, Florida Cooperative Extension Service, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida. Original publication date June 2003. Revised January 10, 2005.  EENY295/IN573: Cicada Killer, Giant Ground Hornet, Sphecius hogardii (Latreille) and Sphecius speciosus (Drury) (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) (ufl.edu)

Florida citrus growers are well aware that nitrogen (N) is the single most important nutrient applied as a fertilizer to assure maximum yield and fruit quality. Most growers are probably also aware of the substantial N fertilizer price increases that have occurred during the past year (Table 1). Ammonium nitrate, the workhorse N fertilizer used by citrus growers for decades, has had the greatest leap in cost. Typical questions on the minds of growers these days are: why has this happened, will it continue, and will economics force a change in the type of N fertilizer we use?  This document is SL-238, one of a series of the Department of Soil and Water Sciences, UF/IFAS Extension. Original publication date February 2006.  SL238/SS457: Nitrogen Fertilizer Sources: What does the future hold for citrus producers? (ufl.edu)
