Using a longitudinal convergent-mixed-methods approach, researchers explored how secondary special education teachers understand and experience well-being in their work as educators. Researchers were interested in how teachers’ reported levels of well-being, as well as interpretations of well-being, shifted over the course of the school year. Evidence from this study suggests that teachers’ subjective experiences matter, but the contexts in which they teach can shift their experiences, which may be connected to overall well-being. Simply reducing stressors and/or burnout will not necessarily result in improved well-being for teachers. School-wide efforts to improve relationships within the school building, providing space for teacher leadership, explicitly naming shared values, and recognizing the emotional calendar of the school year may facilitate teachers’ well-being.

This article in a paper concept that discusses the roles and challenges faced by special education teachers in educating and enhancing hearing impaired students quality of life. This is consistent with the aspiration of the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) also focuses on student personal development to the future nation’s progress. In terms of student development, academic excellence in not the only main aims, but students must be educated holisticly to produce Malaysian citizens who are responsible; knowledgeable; have honourable manners, and be able to achieve personal well-being. Therefore, students with hearing impairments require special education system to suit their different necessities. Special education teachers should prepare themselves with various knowledge, expertise and skills to accomplish the national aspiration. In addition, cooperation, collaboration and support from parent, school management, medical expert and community are significantly required. Abstrak Artikel  ini  merupakan kertas konsep  yang akan  membincangkan  mengenai peranan dan cabaran guru-guru Pendidikan Khas  dalam  membentuk  kemenjadian  murid-murid  masalah  pendengaran.  Ia  selaras  dengan  kehendak  Tranformasi Nasional  2050  (TN50)  yang  memberi  fokus  untuk  melahirkan  kemenjadian  murid  sebagai  salah  satu  aspirasi  untuk memacu negara  di  masa  akan  datang.    Dalam  membentuk  kemenjadian  murid,  pencapaian  akademik  yang  cemerlang bukanlah  merupakan  fokus  utama  tetapi  murid  perlu  dididik  secara  holistik  untuk  melahirkan  warga  negara  Malaysia yang  bertanggungjawab,  berpengetahuan,  berakhlak  dan  mampu  mencapai  kesejahteraan  diri.  Dalam  aspek  ini  murid-murid  masalah pendengaran  memerlukan pendidikan  yang sesuai    mengikut tahap kemampuan  mereka.  Justeru guru-guru  Pendidikan  Khas  perlu  mempersiapkan  diri  dengan  pelbagai  pengetahuan,  kepakaran  dan  kemahiran  untuk mencapai  aspirasi  negara.  Selain  itu,  kerjasama,  kolaborasi  dan  sokongan  daripada  ibu  bapa,  pentadbir  sekolah,  pakar perubatan dan masyarakat amat diperlukan.

In order to enhance core mixed methods research designs, social scientists need an approach that incorporates developments in the social constructionist perspective. This work describes a study that aimed to promote occupational well-being in hospital departments where employees are at risk of burnout, based on a constructionist inquiry developed starting from the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Taking this study as an example, we define a “generative sequential mixed methods approach” as a process that involves consulting quantitative studies to identify criticalities on which to conduct focused, transformative investigations. The article contributes by envisaging ways to mix qualitative and quantitative methods that consider a “generative” and “future-forming” orientation to research, in line with recent shifts in social psychology.

AbstractFuturists predict that a third of jobs that exist today could be taken by Smart Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Algorithms (STARA) by 2025. However, very little is known about how employees perceive these technological advancements in regards to their own jobs and careers, and how they are preparing for these potential changes. A new measure (STARA awareness) was created for this study that captures the extent to which employees feel their job could be replaced by these types of technology. Due to career progression and technology knowledge associated with age, we also tested age as a moderator of STARA. Using a mixed-methods approach on 120 employees, we tested STARA awareness on a range of job and well-being outcomes. Greater STARA awareness was negatively related to organisational commitment and career satisfaction, and positively related to turnover intentions, cynicism, and depression.

Special Education teachers frequently assume formal or informal leadership roles and responsibilities across disciplines (Council for Exceptional Children, 2015a, 2015b). However, despite the increasing attention paid to teacher leadership on an international scale (Wenner & Campbell, 2016), little research exists on the experiences and needs of teacher leaders within the diverse field of Special Education. In this descriptive phenomenological study, we addressed the following questions: 1) What does teacher leadership within the landscape of Special Education look like? 2) How does this work relate to the roles and dispositions laid out in both the Teacher Leader Model Standards (2011) and the Council for Exceptional Children’s Special Education Specialist Preparation Standards (2015a, 2015b)? We found that Special Education teacher leaders primarily demonstrate leadership via support, specifically through the skills of advocacy, facilitating, innovating, and ‘administrating’.

Reading instruction and grouping practices provided for students with learning disabilities (LD) by special education teachers in the resource room were examined. Fourteen special education teachers representing 13 schools were observed three times over the course of 1 year and interviewed in the beginning and end of the school year. Results indicated that teachers primarily provided whole group reading instruction to relatively large groups of students (5 to 19), and little differentiated instruction or materials were provided despite the wide range (3 to 5 grade levels) of reading abilities represented. Most teachers identified whole language as their primary approach to reading, and little instruction that addressed word recognition or comprehension was observed.

This chapter addresses the impact of the traditional hierarchical system of organizational leadership on K-12 schools, particularly in special education. This model of leadership distinguishes leaders, such as school principals, from non-leaders, such as teachers and school staff. For special education teachers, this passé model of leadership becomes a barrier for professional growth by limiting the opportunities for teacher leadership in special education. In order for special education teachers to pursue leadership positions in the K-12 education system, teachers likely have to give up their teaching identities in exchange for new roles and responsibilities. With a limitation of research in the area of teacher leadership in special education, there is a need for discussion on how special education teachers can use their expertise to influence school administrators and staff towards equitable and inclusive organizational change.

Students with emotional disturbance (ED) depend upon special education teachers (SETs) to use evidence-based practices (EBPs) to promote their well-being. SETs, in turn, depend upon school leaders to provide working conditions that support learning and implementation of academic and social EBPs. We conducted an integrative narrative review of research examining working conditions SETs experience serving students with ED in self-contained schools and classes, to better understand whether SETs in these settings experience conditions necessary to effectively implement academic and social EBPs. Our findings suggest that conditions necessary for learning and implementing EBPs are seldom present in these settings. In addition, the extant research on SETs’ working conditions in these settings is largely disconnected from research investigating teachers’ use of EBPs.
