Using the “user-centered” design perspective and the construct of design “humanization” as theoretical underpinnings, this field study verified the role of “objective” design quality of residential facilities for the elderly in the prediction of “subjective” users’ psychological responses. A sample of over-65-year-old adults (N = 114) was recruited in eleven residential facilities, which differed for the degree of “objective” design humanization (rated on the basis of a design expert assessment). Participants had to fill in a questionnaire including measures of both specific perceived environmental qualities (spatial-physical and social-relational) and more general psychological responses (such as residential satisfaction and psychological well-being). Outcomes revealed that older residents living in high-humanization structures show higher scores of residential satisfaction, psychological well-being and perceived environmental qualities than those living in low-humanization structures. Moreover, significant correlations emerged between specific perceived environmental qualities of the facility and general psychological outcomes. These results confirm the importance of design features for supporting elders’ needs and fostering their quality of life.

The results of a comparative empirical study of the psychological well-being of people of elderly age are presented in the article. We tried to test the hypothesis that the psychological well-being of people in elderly age is determined by a number of social factors (involvement in professional activities and the presence of close interpersonal relationships). We tried to determine which components cause a high level of psychological well-being in the elderly age. In the result of the study we found that working respondents have more autonomy than non-working respondents. They have a high degree of responsibility and high self-esteem. They are satisfied with the quality of their lives. The connection between marital status as a factor of close interpersonal relationships and levels of psychological well-being of a people in elderly age was not found. It was found that average and high levels of psychological well-being of people of elderly age are determined by such components as a high subjectness of personality, selfworth, meaningfulness of life, presence of life goals, life satisfaction, satisfaction with the results of life, ability to life management, interest in life, positive self-esteem, positive mood, consistency in achieving goals and consistency between the set and achieved goals.

Using a national probability sample, this study examines the impact of social interaction on psychological well-being across stages of adulthood. Quality of social interaction measured by satisfaction with family life and friendship are found to be positively related to well-being of adults in all age groups. A further examination of this positive effect shows that the impact of family and friendship interaction on well-being are similar in each adulthood stage. These findings show that the positive impact of social interaction on psychological well-being is not unique to the elderly population but similar among all stages of adulthood.

While many researchers have asserted that social participation enhances psychological well-being among the elderly, few empirical investigations have studied this relationship by systematically enhancing activities and developing supports for the isolated elderly. In the present study, elderly community residents participated in a network-building visiting program, which reinforced and encouraged involvement in community settings; in a relationship-oriented visiting program, which emphasized empathy and concern; or in a nonequivalent control group. All three groups were administered pre- and postpoint scales on life satisfaction, health, depression, I-E, current and desired social networks, telephone calls, and visitors. Weekly activities and biweekly quality-of-life-ratings were collected on the two experimental groups. At the program's end, the network-building group exhibited directionally higher means on most variables; however, few significant differences were found. Prepoint correlates of current and desired networks emerged as central factors affecting the psychological well-being of participants in this study.

Objective: Many older adults in Indonesia live with their children. This study examined the relationship between the quality of the relationship that elderly parents may have with their children living with them and any effects on psychological well-being. Methods: Relationship quality encompasses positive and negative aspects. This study employed convenience sampling and to reach 102 elderly participants. A measure of positive and negative social exchanges was used to measure the relationship between elderly parents and their children. Ryff’s Scale of Psychological Well-Being was utilized to measure the psychological well-being of the subjects. We used descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, an independent t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to assess the statistics produced. Results: The primary results showed no correlation between the positive qualities of the relationship and psychological well-being ( r = 0.092, p > 0.01). However, the negative qualities of the relationship were negatively correlated with psychological well-being ( r = −0.335, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Thus, negative qualities of relationships with their children were found to be more impactful on psychological well-being than positive qualities in elderly parents who maintain coresidence with their children. This means that the greater the lack of sympathy, intrusion, failure to provide needed help, and rejection/neglect from the child, the worse the psychological well-being of the elderly parent.

AbstractWHO (2015) states that there is an increase in ageing in the world population, which is further compounded by situations of age discrimination. These negative attitudes constitute entrenched stereotypes that harm not only society but also the elderly themselves. For this reason, all social and health actors need to work under the paradigm of Active Ageing, which advocates an integrated old age in a context of development and social participation. Objectives: To analyse the health self perception, quality of life and psychological welfare of the elderly, as well as to compare whether there are differences in relation to sex, place of residence (urban/rural) and how to perceive retirement. Methodology: Sample: 91 subjects (=74,07 years).Instruments: Health Questionnaire SF (36) and Psychological Welfare Scale (Díaz et al., 2006). Results: The participants show a very satisfactory assessment in their own perception of health and quality of life. In this respect, different trends are observed according to habitat, rural/urban, where the largest resides. On the other hand, there are also differences in the dimensions of psychological welfare according to the sex of the subjects and the way they perceive the fact of retirementKeywords: Autoperception of health; Quality of life; Psychological Well-being; Aging; Active Aging; Oldness

Older or elderly adults represent a population exposed to potentially inappropriate prescriptions, since medication is the most widely used intervention. The objective of this work is to analyze the type of medication schemes of the elderly and the relationship with their states of psychological well-being. It is a cross-sectional study. Results: inappropriate prescription is of the order of 16% and the perception of quality of life was 56.8, finding an association between inappropriate prescription and perception of quality of life. Conclusions: The results showed that inappropriate prescription is highly frequent in these patients and that psychological well-being states would be related to this inappropriate prescription.
