This thesis is comprised of two case studies on the selection and implementation of systems Mimsy XG at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and AtoM and Islandora at Ryerson University’s Archives and Special Collections. These studies highlight the changes cultural heritage institutions are currently undergoing to digitally structure, manage, and access collections data by using a relational collections management system (CMS). The findings show that the success of a CMS is largely determined by the type of cultural heritage institution implementing it (archives, libraries, and museums), the types of collections within that organisation, in addition to institutional mandates and requirements. The ways in which a CMS platform answers these requirements through the data model and proprietary or open-source implementations determine the outcome of an institutional transition to a CMS.

Computer room is an important infrastructure of information technology on education for colleges, how to balance the load, calculate fees flexibly, improve resource utilization, service for the teachers and students better is an urgent problem.Firstly, the development trends of computer room management systems are discussed in the paper. Secondly, gives a data model of open computer room management system, which in order to balance the load and improve the utilization efficiency etc. of computer rooms. Finally, gives the intelligent billing algorithm according to the designed data model, and then implemented the algorithm using stored procedure with SQL Server 2005.

This chapter examines the main issues that have to be considered when selecting an open source content management system. It involves a discussion of literature and the experiences of the authors after installing and testing four widely used open source CMSs (Moodle, Drupal, Xoops, and Mambo) on a stand-alone desktop computer. It takes into consideration Arnold’s (2003) and Han’s (2004) suggestions for the development of CMSs, and identifies six criteria that need to be considered when selecting an open source CMS for use.

This paper discusses the strategies for integrating Quality, Environmental, Safety and Health Management Systems based on survey and case studies results. Questionnaires were distributed to 87 companies that certified with both ISO9001 and ISO14001. Meanwhile, three case studies were conducted at the manufacturing companies that have integrated several management systems. There are two ways of integrating the management systems which are: (1) consecutive implementation of management systems followed by integration or (2) integrate the management systems simultaneously from the beginning. Based on survey and case studies, it was found that many organisations started with implementing individual management system first, and then followed by integrating the management systems. Almost all the survey respondents agreed that the sequence should start with establishing Quality Management System first, and then integrate with Environmental Management System and followed by Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

In the current market space there are many commercially available Course Management Systems (CMS) from which to choose, such as BlackBoard and Desire2Learn. The open source community has also been active in creating alternative course management system choices that are free of licensing costs (Moodle, Sakai). Institutions now have the choice between these competing CMSs, and it is not enough to just pick a package based on its price or feature list. Institutions considering implementing a CMS must carefully evaluate it before putting it to use with a student population. A trial was undertaken to consider whether Moodle warranted a more formal consideration as an alternative to the institution’s current CMS (BlackBoard) at a southeastern university. This report documents a detailed comparison of BlackBoard and Moodle CMSs based on students’ experiences that used both systems during the same course and investigates if Moodle warrants consideration as an alternative to the institution’s current course management system.

Workflows form the essential part of the process execution both in a single machine and in distributed environments. Although providing conditional structures is not mandatory for a workflow management system, support for conditional workflows is very important in terms of error handling, flexibility and robustness. Several of the existing workflow management systems already support conditional structures via use of different constructs. In this paper, we study the most widely used workflow management systems and their support for conditional structures such as if, switch, and while. We compare implementation of common conditional structures using each of these workflow management systems via case studies, and discuss capabilities of each system.
