Através de um estudo bibliométrico analisou-se 113 artigos publicados em 23 revistas inseridas no SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR), com o objetivo de analisar o perfil das pesquisas contábeis no contexto do terceiro setor divulgadas em periódicos internacionais no período de 2011 a 2015. A presente pesquisa é descritiva, e com relação à abordagem do problema é classificada como quanti-qualitativa com ênfase no aspecto quantitativo. Dentre os principais resultados, destaca-se que o tema relacionado à gestão destas organizações foi o mais frequente, com 20 trabalhos, seguido pela prestação de contas/transparência com 15 artigos. Com relação à metodologia há a predominância da pesquisa de campo com 75 artigos, e estudo de caso ou multicaso com 21 trabalhos. Quanto aos objetivos, 49 pesquisas foram classificadas como exploratórias, e 38 como descritivas. Na abordagem empregada, 88 artigos classificaram o método como quantitativo, seguido pela análise qualitativa com 25 trabalhos. Verificou-se que a maior parte dos artigos (41,59%) são elaborados por 2 autores, e que o gênero masculino supera o feminino com 117 pesquisadores (53,67%), contra 101 (46,33%). Contudo, Erica E. Harris, do gênero feminino destaca-se como a autora mais produtiva. Os dois periódicos mais prolíferos foram o Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, com 43 publicações, e o Nonprofit and Management com 19 artigos. Os Estados Unidos lidera com as universidades mais produtivas: Georgia State University; Michigan State University e New York University, que originaram 5 artigos cada, também foi o país que mais obteve número de investigações, 54,47% do total.
