The presence of renewable energy sources in hybrid renewable energy systems is considered a significant challenge since the generation mainly depends on meteorological conditions. Hence, employing a robust and flexible energy storage system is, therefore, a crucial solution in such circumstances. This paper investigates the performance evaluation of both batteries and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) systems integrated with hybrid solar-wind DC-bus microgrid. The study focuses on enhancing the system stability using both storage technologies during normal and extreme renewables instabilities like wind gusts and shadows, and sudden load variations. Moreover, the load voltage/frequency were preserved constant during the distinct instabilities using the inverter control system. Productive findings showed the superior performance of utilizing the SMES over the batteries and its potential to enhance the system power-quality.

Integration of renewable energy sources (RES) in a distribution network facilities the establishment of sustainable power systems. Concurrently, the incorporation of energy storage system (ESS) plays a pivotal role to maintain the economical significance as well as mitigates the technical liabilities associated with uncontrollable and fluctuating renewable output power. Nevertheless, ESS technologies require additional investments that imposes a techno-economic challenge of selection, allocation and sizing to ensure a reliable power system that is operationally optimized with reduced cost. In this paper, a deterministic cost-optimization framework is presented based on a multi-input nonlinear programming to optimally solve the sizing and allocation problem. The optimization is performed to obviate the demand-generation mismatch, that is violated with the introduction of variable renewable energy sources. The proposed optimization method is tested and validated on an IEEE 24-bus network integrated with solar and wind energy sources. The deterministic approach is solved using GAMS optimization software considering the system data of one year. Based on the optimization framework, the study also presents various different scenarios of renewable energy mix in combination with advanced ESS technologies to outline an technical as well as economical framework for ESS sizing, allocation, and selection. Based on the optimal results obtained, the optimal sizing and allocation were obtained for lead-acid, lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium and sodium-sulfur (NaS) battery energy storage system. While all these storage technologies mitigated the demand-generation mismatch with optimal size and location. However, the NaS storage technology was found to be the best among the given storage technologies for the given system minimum possible cost. Furthermore, it was observed that the cost of hybrid wind-solar mix system results in the lowest overall cost.

The current paper presents an energy storage system that stores the excessive energy, provided by a hybrid system of renewable energy sources, in the form of compressed air and thermal heat. Using energy storage systems together with renewable energy sources represents a major challenge that could ensure the transition to a viable economic future and a decarbonized economy. Thermodynamic calculations are conducted to investigate the performance of such systems by using Matlab simulation tools. The results indicate the values of primary and global efficiencies for various operating scenarios for the energy storage systems which use compressed air as medium storage, and shows that these could be very effective systems, proving the possibility to supply to the final user three types of energy: electricity, heat and cold function of his needs.

A nuclear power plant is one of the power sources that shares a large portion of base-load. However, as the proportion of renewable energy increases, nuclear power plants will be required to generate power more flexibly due to the intermittency of the renewable energy sources. This paper reviews a layout thermally integrating the liquid air energy storage system with a nuclear power plant. To evaluate the performance realistically while optimizing the layout, operating nuclear power plant conditions are used. After revisiting the analysis, the optimized performance of the proposed system is predicted to achieve 59.96% of the round-trip efficiency. However, it is further shown that external environmental conditions could deteriorate the performance. For the design of liquid air energy storage-nuclear power plant integrated systems, both the steam properties of the linked plants and external factors should be considered.

Electrical grid is no longer featured in a conventional way nowadays. Today, the growing of new technologies, primarily the distributed renewable energy sources and electric vehicles, has been integrated with the distribution networks causing several technical issues. As a result, the penetration of the renewable energy sources can be limited by the utility companies. Smart grid has been emerged as one of the solutions to the technical issues, hence allowing the usage of renewable and improving the energy efficiency of the electrical grid. The challenge is to develop an intelligent management system to maintain the balance between the generation and demand. This task can be performed by using energy storage system. As part of the smart grid, the deployment of energy storage system plays a critical role in stabilizing the voltage and frequency of the networks with renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. This book chapter illustrates the revolution and the roles of energy storage for improving the network performance.

Recently, more and more people realize the importance of environment protection. Electric power generation systems using renewable energy sources have an advantage of no greenhouse effect gas emission. Among all the choices, wind power can offer an economic and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional methods of power supply. As a result, wind energy generation, utilization and its grid penetration in electrical grid is increasing world wide. The wind generated power is always fluctuating due to its time varying nature and causing stability problem. Inserting energy storage system into large scale wind farm to eliminate the fluctuation becomes a solution for developing large scale renewable energy system connected with grid. The topology diagram and control strategy are presented in this paper. According to the simulation result, it could be indicated that embedding energy storage system into wind power system could improve the access friendly and extend system functions. This paper shows that integrating energy storage system into wind power system will build a more reliable and flexible system for power grid.
