Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of a Schiff base ligand (E)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-4-methoxybenzohydrazide (HBMB) and its Mn(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) metal complexes (C1-C3) respectively. The ligand HBMB was synthesized by reacting condensation of salicylaldehyde and 4-methoxy benzohydrazide in a 1:1 molar ratio. The structure of HBMB and its metal complexes (C1-C3) were evaluated by using UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, mass spectroscopy as well as on the basis of elemental analysis, conductivity measurements, and thermogravimetric techniques (TGA). The synthesized molecules' tumoricidal properties were performed against human breast cancer (MCF-7) and colon cancer (HT 29) cell lines. The biological results indicated that the ligand, HBMB, and metal complexes possess dose-dependent selective cytotoxicity against the tested carcinoma cells. The synthesized compounds were further evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), and fungal strains (Aspergillus niger).

A new Schiff base ligand (L) [2,2′-((1Z,1′Z)-((4-methyl-1,2- phenylene)bis(azanylidene))bis(methanylylidene))diphenol], derived from condensation of salicyaldehyde and 3,4-diamino toluene. The synthesized ligand was used for complexation with different metal ions Cr(III), Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) using a molar ratio of metal:ligand (1:1). The synthesized ligand and its metal complexes were characterized by TLC, NMR (1H & 13C), UV-visible, mass, FT-IR spectroscopies, elemental analysis, magnetic moment and conductivity measurement. On the basis of above studies the proposed structure of synthesized mononuclear metal complexes have been found to possess tetrahedral geometry while Cr(III) and Co(II) ions possess octahedral geometry. The spectral studies revealed that the synthesized ligand was acting as tetradentate chelating agent and coordinated to metal centre via deprotonated phenolate oxygen and azomethine-N atom. The biological activity of ligand and its metal complexes were screened in vitro against Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium and E. coli), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and fungus (Aspergillus fumigatus) to ascertain their antibacterial and antifungal properties.

This report describes the synthesis and exploration of novel Schiff base ligand in the form of a polymer (heptamer) which was prepared by reaction between 3,4-diacetyl-2,5-hexanedione and hydrazine hydrate in ethanol. On further reaction of Schiff base with transition metals ions (Co and Cu) leads to formation of its transition metal complexes. The structural identification of Schiff base ligand and its transition metal complexes were characterized by classical structural techniques like FT-IR, NMR and mass spectra. The free ligand and its transition metal complexes have been screened for in vitro biological activities against various strains of bacteria and fungi. The prepared Schiff base and its metal complexes were also screened for antiangiogenic activity. The results have shown the remarkable antimicrobial and antiangiogenic activities of the Schiff base and its metal complexes.

The present study deals with the synthesis of a new Schiff base ligand, 4-(((4-chlorobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)-2-methoxyphenol (HL) derived from the condensation of 2-Amino-4-chlorobenzothiazole and 4-Hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde, and its Co(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) complexes in 2:1 molar ratio (2HL:M). The Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes were characterized using FT-IR, UV-Visible absorption, mass spectra, and TGA techniques. The spectral analysis results confirmed the molecular structures of the Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes. Further, the metallic Schiff base complexes showed significant growth inhibition in the adenocarcinoma human alveolar basal epithelial cells, A549, with the Co(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II) complexes having IC50 values of 40.78, 42.04, and 44.69 M, respectively.

Four complexes of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) with Schiff base ligand (H3L) derived from 2-amino-3-methylbutanoic acid and acetylacetonate were synthesized. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and electronic spectroscopy. The results confirmed the coordination of the ligand to metals in tridentate fashion via the hydroxyl oxygen, the azomethine nitrogen and the enolic acetylacetonate oxygen. Antimicrobial activities were established for all complexes, free ligand and ciprofloxacin for comparison. Both the ligand and its metal complexes were active against Gram-positive and negative bacterial strains. The Cu(II) complex, showed highest antibacterial activity among the complexes screened. Other complexes displayed considerable antibacterial activity. Octahedral geometry was proposed for the metal(II) complexes with the Schiff base.                     KEY WORDS: Schiff base, Amino acid, Metal Complexes, Antibacterial agents   Bull. Chem. Soc. Binuclear metal complexes of the metal ions Fe (II), Co (II), Ni (II) and Cu (II) were synthesized by the reaction of these metal ions with the imine of benzidine (H2L) as a primary ligand and o-phenylenediammine (OPD) as a secondary ligand  in a molar ratio of 2:2:1. The prepared complexes were characterized using CHN elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-visible, molar conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and TGA-DTA thermogravimetric analysis. All the prepared complexes showed apparent stability and could be stored for months without any appreciable change. According to the results obtained by elemental and spectral analyses, a tetrahedral structure is suggested for all the prepared complexes, except for the copper complex which showed a square planar structure. The antimicrobial activities of these complexes were evaluated against Bacillus spp. (Gram-negative bacteria), Proteus spp. (Gram-positive bacteria) and Aspergillus niger (A. niger, a fungal species). The results showed that all the prepared complexes have no apparent effects on Bacillus spp. viability, whereas Proteus spp.  and A. niger were affected significantly.

This study involves the chemical synthesis of the novel ligand 5-(2-diphenylphosphino) phenyl-1,2-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione (DPDTT) by the reaction of 2-diphenylphosphino benzoic acid with absolute ethanol that yield ethyl 2-diphenylphosphino benzoate and by cyclization of this compound with thiosemicarbazide, DPDTT will be produced. The chelating complexes of this ligand with Cr(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) were also prepared and studied. The new complexes were characterized by FT-IR, UV/visible spectra, and room temperature magnetic susceptibility. The stability for the prepared complexes was also measured using the density function theory and it was found that the cadmium complex is the most stable and the chromium complex is the least stable. Free ligand and its metal complexes have been tested in vitro against a number of microorganisms, like gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and gram negative bacteria E. coli, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas and Klebsiella in order to assess their antimicrobial properties. All complexes showed considerable activity against all the studied bacteria.

A bidentate (N- and O-) imine-based ligand (L1) and its metal complexes of types [CuII(L1)2] (C1), [CuII(L1)(Phen)] (C2), [CoIII(L1)2] (C3), and [CoIII(L1)(Phen)] (C4) (L1 = 2-((E)-(6-fluorobenzo[d]thiazol-2-ylimino)methyl)-4-chlorophenol and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized as potential chemotherapeutic drug candidates. The prepared complexes were structurally characterized by spectral techniques (NMR, FT-IR, LC-MS, EPR, and electronic absorption), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA), magnetic moment, and CHNO elemental analysis. Spectroscopic studies suggested the distorted octahedral structure for all complexes. In vitro bioassay studies include binding and nuclease activities of the ligand and its complexes with target calf thymus- (CT-) DNA were carried out by employing UV-Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, viscosity, and gel electrophoresis techniques. The extent of binding propensity was determined quantitatively by Kb and Ksv values which revealed a higher binding affinity for C2 and C4 as compared to C1 and C3. In addition, the scavenging superoxide anion free radical (O∙-2) activity of metal complexes was determined by nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) light reduction assay. Molecular docking studies with DNA and SOD enzyme were also carried out on these compounds. The antimicrobial study has shown that all the compounds are potential antibacterial agents against Gram-negative bacterial strains and better antifungal agents with respect to standard drugs used.
