Echinococcal disease remains a problem within some endemic areas. Echinococcal cysts usually involve the liver and lungs, but are extremely rare in the uterus. In this paper we report the rare case of a 27-year-old unmarried doctor presented with the complains of menorrhagia for 9 months and lump in lower abdomen for 6 months. Ultrasonography and MRI revealed a large multiloculated cystic lesion within the uterine cavity. Serological tests were positive for echinococcus. The patient was operated on; cysts were removed from uterine cavity. Antihelminthics were administered postoperatively and the patient was closely followed up for 9 months, without menorrhagia or recurrence of Echinococcal cyst. Although Echinococcal cysts are extremely rare in the uterus, it can be managed successfully. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bmj.v40i2.18513 Bangladesh Medical Journal 2011 Vol.40(2): 58-60

Hydatid cyst is a common zoonosis, affecting the liver and lungs in the endemic areas. Occasionally it involves the brain. We present a rare case of multicystic cerebral Hydatid cyst present over a long time in an adult patient with some odd radiological features like calcification and discuss the relevant literature. In endemic areas, neurosurgeons must be aware of this entity.Nepal Journal of Neuroscience 12:49-51, 2015

Echinococcus granulosus complex is the causative parasite of hydatid disease, endemic to regions with stock breeding and agriculture. We present a rare case of primary pancreatic hydatid disease in a 20-year-old female who had complaints of upper abdominal pain and epigastric fullness. The typical radiological ndings in ultrasound, CT and MRI helps to differentiate this lesion from other cystic lesions in the pancreas. Therefore this lesion should be kept as a differential in endemic areas

Background: Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic disease due to the infection with the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus. The liver and lungs (80%) are the main organs involved and rarely head and neck. Case Presentation: A 47-year-old Iranian man presented to our center complaining of sublingual inflammation for 8 months. Sonography revealed a cystic lesion of 4×5×6 cm within the tongue. CT-scan showed a well-defined and hypodense mass in the floor of the mouth. Cyst resection was performed with the probability of ranula. Pathology was suggestive of hydatid cyst. Further workups revealed liver involvement. Therefore, he was treated with albendazole for 2 months. Conclusion: The hydatid cyst in the head and neck is rare and the involvement of sublingual gland is extremely rare. However, in endemic areas, hydatid cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of head and neck masses.

Isolated echinococcosis or hydatid cyst of breast is very rare disease especially in non-endemic areas. Even in endemic areas, hydatid cysts detects only for 0.27% of all cases of hydatidosis. Diagnosis of hydatid disease is difficult and it is diagnosed after surgical excision in majority cases. We report a case of 39 year old female with isolated hydatid cyst of the left breast that appeared as a painless breast lump without any specific symptoms.

abstract A rare case of hydatid cyst of the skull is presented. The presenting symptom was an acute increase of the intracranial pressure. The patient was operated upon under emergency conditions with the diagnosis of a cystic lesion of the brain. After a brief review of the literature, the symptomatology of the disease is discussed. It is emphasized that radiological studies, especially plain x-ray films of the skull, are most important in diagnosing the disease.

Abstract Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection and a significant public health problem in low- and middle-income countries. A 79-year-old female patient was presented to the gynecology outpatient department with complaints of pain in the abdomen and difficulty in micturition, with a mass palpable per speculum. The ultrasound was suggestive of an ovarian cystadenocarcinoma, whereas computed tomography of the abdomen favored hydatid cyst with adnexal neoplasm as a differential diagnosis. Considering the contradictory findings, a frozen section was sent to confirm the diagnosis, which showed hooklets of Echinococcus granulosus/hydatid cyst under the microscope. This was a rare case of pelvic hydatid cyst mimicking ovarian malignancy and was associated with a less-preferred mode of investigation (frozen section). This article focuses on how a frozen section, despite its limitations and being expensive, can still be considered for accurate patient management.

The diagnostic of arbovirus-related obstetric complications in high-risk pregnancy and childbirth care is challenging, especially in endemic areas. We conducted a prospective study to track active or recent Zika (ZIKV), dengue (DENV), or chikungunya (CHIKV) virus infection among hospitalized pregnant women (PW) with obstetric complications in a hospital at the epicenter of Zika outbreak and ZIKV-related microcephaly in Brazil. Clinical data and blood samples were collected at enrollment and 10 days after the admission of study participants, between October 2018 and May 2019. Further clinical data were extracted from medical records. Samples were screened by molecular and serological tests. Out of 780 participants, 93.1% (95% CI: 91.1–94.7%) presented previous DENV exposure (IgG). ZIKV, CHIKV, and/or DENV laboratory markers of recent or active infection were detected in 130 PW, yielding a prevalence of 16.6% (95% CI: 14.2–19.5%); 9.4% (95% CI: 7.4–11.7%), 7.4% (95% CI: 5.7–9.7%), and 0.38% (95% CI: 0.1–1.2%) of CHIKV, ZIKV, and DENV infections, respectively. Most ZIKV infections were detected by molecular assays (89.6%), while CHIKV infections were detected by serology (95.9%). Our findings highlight the need for arbovirus infections screening in PW with obstetrical complications, potentially associated to these infections in endemic areas regardless of the signs or symptoms suggestive of arboviral disease.

Abstract Background Endometriosis of the uterine body can be manifested as diffuse solid lesions or cystic lesions. The former is common, while the latter is rare, especially for cystic adenomyosis larger than 5 cm. Case presentation A 30-year-old woman was admitted for severe and worsening dysmenorrhea. Ultrasound examination revealed a rare well-circumscribed cystic lesion about 5.5 × 4 × 5.0 cm. CA-125 level was slightly elevated. She accepted laparoscopic surgery and the adenomyotic tissues were excised. The histopathology of the specimen demonstrated the endometrial glands in the walls of cysts and an area of extensive hemorrhage can be seen in the inner wall of cyst. The patient made a good recovery after surgery and her symptoms complete resoluted. Conclusions This is a rare case of a cystic adenomyotic lesion that was treated by laparoscopic surgery.
