Zooplankton constitute important food item of many omnivorous and carnivorous fishes. The study was conducted with an aim to study the zooplankton production including physico-chemical parameters with an emphasis to the existing management practices taken by the operators. The study was carried out in a culture and a non-culture pond of Rajshahi University campus was carried out from September, 2004 to February, 2005. Monthly fluctuations of some physico-chemical parameters were noted. The ponds showed alkaline in nature with moderate bicarbonate alkalinity. Diurnal change of water temperature, free CO2 and dissolved Oxygen were also studied. Four groups of zooplankton were identified, of which copepods (1260 units/l and 973.33 units/l in pond-1 and pond-2 respectively) were most dominant. A total of 9 genera of zooplankton were identified of which Cyclops (68.25% and 60.28% of total copepods) was most abundant in both ponds. Total zooplankton showed positive correlation with pH, carbonate alkalinity (CO3) and bicarbonate alkalinity (HCO3) in both ponds and DO, carbon dioxide (CO2) in pond-1. Present findings indicated that the culture pond showed better result than that of the non-culture pond regarding zooplankton production. Key words: Zooplankton, culture pond, non-culture pond, physico-chemical parameters.   doi:10.3329/ujzru.v27i0.1951 Univ. j. zool. Rajshahi Univ. Vol. 27, 2008 pp. 35-41

Bioremediation is an important technology to remediate the chromium (Cr) contaminated soil and water. In this study, Shewanella putrefaciens (MTTC8410) was used to investigate the influence of carbon concentration, pH, and temperature on reduction of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] into trivalent chromium [Cr(III)]. The increased bacterial growth rate was significantly reduced the Cr(VI) concentration. In batch mode experiments, 1% starch recorded the highest reduction of Cr(VI) (90%) followed by 1% glucose (88% reduction) and a reduction of 77% was by 1% cellulose. By using various pH conditions the maximum Cr(VI) reduction was achieved at pH 7.0. In this experiment the maximum Cr(VI) reduction (75%) was observed at 35°C, followed by 30°C with 62% of Cr(VI) reduction. Bioreactor analysis revealed the highest reduction of Cr(VI) (88%) in unsterile tannery effluent. The significant levels of physico- chemical parameters were reduced in unsterile tannery effluent, as compared to the sterile tannery effluent. The experimental results revealed that the S. putrefaciens (MTTC8410) could be used as a potential bacterial strain for reduction of Cr(VI) from contaminated groundwater.

Study was conducted to determine the physico-chemical parameters of water of three different lakes in Jahangirnagar University campus from March to November, 2013. The selected parameters were water depth, water temperature, conductivity, transparency, pH, dissolve O2, free CO2, total alkalinity, hardness, sulfate and water color. Water depth fluctuated from 140 cm to 385 cm, temperature ranged from 250C to 310C, conductivities ranged from 627 ?S/cm to 1544 ?S/cm, transparency from 22 cm to 87 cm, considerable variation of water colors were found and pH ranged from 6.4 to 7.5 without having any significant fluctuation. Dissolve oxygen (DO) ranged from 2.7 mg/l to 7.6 mg/l, carbon dioxide level ranged from 16 mg/l to 62 mg/l, total alkalinity and hardness were ranged from 43 mg/l to 92 mg/l and 63 mg/l to 134 mg/l, respectively with slight variations in different lakes in different months. During the study period, all the spots showed minimum fluctuation of physico-chemical parameters from the normal range without having some exceptions.Bangladesh J. Zool. 43(2): 239-250, 2015

A comparative study of water chemistry of Keshaliya, Shinghiya and Lohandra rivers of Province No 1, Morang District, Nepal was performed for one spring season in 2016. Altogether 18 physico-chemical parameters were selected to be determined for each river during spring season. The values of each parameter recorded for the above rivers were pH (6.59 to 8.08), temperature (22.4 to 30.30C), electrical conductivity (336 to 537 NTU), DO (4.17 to 10.65 mg/l), total dissolved solids (168 to 268.5 mg/l), total hardness (145 to 204 mg/l), calcium hardness (106 to 180 mg/l), total alkalinity (172 to 226 mg/l), Silica (180 to 393 mg/l), total nitrogen (4.2 to 14 mg/l) total phosphorous (0.07 to 0.45 mg/l), BOD (4.24 to 126.27 mg/l), COD (9.20 to 252 mg/l), nitrate (<0.05 to 0.18 mg/l), chloride (4 to 36 mg/l), magnesium (4.13 to 21.4 mg/l) and calcium (12.15 to 72.29 mg/l).
