The chronological reordering of the Qur'an remains one of the main entrance gates to the Muslim sacred text for researchers today. However, if chronology produces a strong sense of coherence by providing both an organising principle and a narrative context, its historical accuracy is difficult to assess. Recurrent criticism points to its dependence on traditional materials, the circularity of its argumentation, and the inability to appreciate, and account for, the present state of the Qur'anic text. This article engages these questions through a close reading of one of the most influential chronological reorderings, that of the Geschichte des Qorâns by Nöldeke and Schwally, taking the different versions of this seminal text into consideration so as to explore its assumptions, methodology and originality. Particular attention is paid to the textual impact of this linear reading on the Qur'anic text and to the inherent difficulties encountered in any chronological arrangement of the Muslim scripture.

750 male industrial managers participated in a survey specifying the role of sense of coherence in occupational stress. A strong sense of coherence buffered from strain almost independently of respondents' age, exposure to stressors, or perceived stressors; however, a strong sense of coherence was slightly related to the selection of individuals into jobs characterized by relatively low exposure to such stressors as lack of control and role ambiguity. Sense of coherence did not moderate the relationships among exposure to stressors, perceived stressors, and strain experienced.

This paper argues that the British period drama Downton Abbey, which aired between 2010 and 2015 and encountered worldwide success, uses working class and middle-class female characters to promote the aristocracy and conservative ideas, while hiding behind historical accuracy and seemingly progressive patterns of behaviour. Through a close reading of four female characters, I will demonstrate how the series’ author, Julian Fellowes, uses the show to endorse his own political agenda, as a Conservative member of the House of Lords in the British Parliament.

Chapter 7 concerns the National Museum of Taiwan Literature (國立台灣文學館‎) and its efforts to assert literature as a cultural foundation for a national polis. It presents a close reading of the exhibit when the museum first opened in 2003 and the 2011 revised exhibition. Like the National Museum of Taiwan History, this museum emphasizes Taiwan’s linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as its strong sense of openness and cultural tolerance.

Through a close reading of Douglass’s farewell speech in London, the newspaper coverage of the racist discrimination he faced once again from the Cunard shipping company, and his subsequent account of the episode, this chapter shows how Douglass returned to the United States, equipped with the skills and confidence to embark on a new phase of his career, breaking away with his mentor William Lloyd Garrison with a strong sense of his own, distinctive, role in the antislavery struggle to come.

There are many people in every walk of life that have different levels of abilities to reach their goals. Few might rely on their talents and skills to work and few might use their meticulous tactics and ideas that lead them to their goals but there are also people who are gritty. Such people persevere through difficulty and do not give in till the end. These individuals are considered to have a strong sense of meaning which in turn leads to their positive wellbeing. Sense of coherence and grit have been identified as important variables contributing to the well-being of an individual. In the current study, the role of grit in predicting well-being is investigated. The role of sense of coherence as a mediator between grit and well-being is also analysed. The Short Grit Scale (Duckworth et al., 2007) Sense of Coherence Scale (Antonovsky, 1987) and Scales of Psychological Well-being (Ryff, 1995) were used to assess the variables in a sample of 250 medical and engineering students. Results indicated a positive correlation between grit and wellbeing and confirmed the mediating role of SOC.

Abstract Scholars have long noted the eccentric vocabulary of Spenser’s A View of the Present State of Ireland, primarily with an eye toward glossing words unfamiliar outside of a contemporary Irish context. This essay steps back from consideration of individual words to ponder what can be learned from word frequencies, primarily focusing on what the tools of corpus linguistics can tell us about the View and especially the View in relation to Spenser’s poetry. What words are most common in the View? What words in the View are most likely (or least likely) to occur in Spenser’s poetry? Is the vocabulary of Eudoxus similar to or notably different from the vocabulary of Irenius? What parts of Spenser’s poetic corpus have the greatest (or least) affinity, vocabulary-wise, with the View? This essay answers those questions and argues that linguistic analysis must go hand-in-hand with traditional close reading in order to draw conclusions from those answers.

A glorified bodily resurrection in Matthew 27:51b-53? A close reading of the text. Matthew 27:51 b-53 is a crux interpretum in the exegesis of the Matthew text. By comparing the semantic domains of lexical items and by determining the subtle distinctions between closely related words, the article takes a close look at the reading of this text. The text is interpreted within its narrative context against the background of the apostolic preaching tradition. Following these exegetical lines, the article makes the point that the resurrection of the saints in Matthew 27:51b-53 is to be understood as a glorified bodily resurrection.
