In the present work, we have developed a new indicator displacement system based on pillararene for anionic water-soluble carboxylato pillar [6] arene (WP6) and aromatic fluorescent dye safranine T (ST). A large fluorescence enhancement and colour change of ST were observed after complexation with electron-rich cavity in WP6 because of host-guest twisted intramolecular charge-transfer interactions. The constructed pillararene-indicator displacement system can be applied for caffeine selective detection in water.

A novel NIR ratiometric fluorescent probe HBT-GSH was developed for the selective detection of GSH over Cys and Hcy in aqueous solution. The signaling mechanism of the GSH-induced removal of an acetyl group and the switching on of ICT fluorescence was proposed.

A novel fluorescent rhodamine-based probe L for selective responding to ClO– has been synthesized and characterized. The spectroscopy showed that probe L can detect ClO– in aqueous solution without interaction with other interfering ions, and the detection is also evident by the colour change from colourless to reddish purple under white light. The remarkable fluorescence enhancement showed the high selectivity and sensitivity of probe L for the detection of ClO–. Furthermore, probe L was applied to intracellular fluorescent imaging of HeLa cells treated with ClO– and MTT assay showed nontoxicity in living cells.

A donor–π–acceptor fluorescent dye, 4-[N,N-di(4-phenyl)amino]benzaldehyde 4-chlorobenzoyl hydrazone (TPA-CBH), based on a triphenylamine derivative (TPA) and 4-chlorobenzoyl hydrazine (CBH) was designed and synthesized. The optical properties of this luminogen were investigated in solutions as well as in the solid states. In the intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) mechanism, TPA-CBH exhibits solvatochromism when dissolved in various polar solvents. Aggregation-induced emission was observed with the changes of tetrahydrofuran/water ratios. In the solid state, mechanochromic fluorescence is observed when the samples are stressed under different conditions. Based on structural analyses and theoretical calculations, it is found that intra- and intermolecular CT processes play a key role in the diversity of fluorescent properties.

The photo-induced fluorescence enhancement for a BOPIM derivate, which was found weak or no fluorescence in solvents due to twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) was investigated. The quenching process because of TICT state is substantially removed and fluorescence emission intensity increased remarkably, induced by UV-irradiation. This phenomenon could only found in moderate polar solvent, such as CHCl3, THF and 1, 4-dioxane (DIOX), but not in more polarity solvent, such as CH3CN, CH3OH. It is indicated that the transformation from TICT to ICT state take place easily in moderate polar solvents.
